I'm at work and not a goth, so:

- Sisters: prefer Adrenochrome or Tower Of Love 12"
- Bauhaus: Gothest opening film credits eVah
- Fields Of The Neph: is this the one where he screams, "Constant PAIN!!!!"? If not, then that one.
- Surely The Mission should feature?
- THIS

Some favourite dark doomy post-punk:

Wire - I Should Have Known Better https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FxigNmhB5KM
The Cure - The Figurehead https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oA4Zdpw5MN0
Siouxsie & the Banshees - Monitor https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0sMC3qugQPM / Cascade https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9kx_yPYzEFc
Dead Can Dance - Ocean https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=N0VO25VgUUc
Killing Joke - Love Like Blood https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VOxgcYWZzio
Cocteau Twins - Because of Whirl-Jack https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gHLwNNAyf6g
Simple Minds - This Fear of Gods https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hdFbVklPTjE
The Damned - Curtain Call https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=w1OKwH_f1PE

Outsider choice:
Pulp - Mark of the Devil https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=o_-01KaF3d4

Tricky to put your finger on; because of the way it borrows/adopts stylings from more modern things like German Expressionism, 'Goth' can seem like a bit of a misnomer. Anyroad:

Nico: Frozen Warnings
Bowie: Subterraneans
Cure: A Short-Term Effect
And two of early Dead Can Dance (a Lisa one and a Brendan one): Threshold / In Power We Entrust, etc

wosl

^^ I was going to go for Ocean, but after second thoughts replaced it with Threshold, which 'rocks' more!  Most of that first DCD album fits the bill here.

Temple Of Love deserves the top spot just as much. Hard to pick one, Long Train is a current fave.

The Nephilim song you are referring to is Blue Water https://youtu.be/09AZd1Z-Ek0, and I struggled to pick one over the other. Especially as the videos connect the story, with Carl getting hung at the end of Preacher Man and Blue Water starts with him singing while dangling from the noose. Super fun stuff.

I liked The Mission at the time, but none of their stuff holds up for me now. And The Cure aren't in there either because they're mostly bobbins.

Yes, 'Ocean' isn't the most conventional one on there, but it's my favourite, and one of my favourite DCD tracks in general. And yeah, the first album is superb. Listen to it, everyone.

I'd forgotten how funny the start of that video is, thank you.  And special mention to their classic Mooooonchild

Couple of more recent ones:

Whispering Sons - Alone except now they call goth 'Darkwave' for some reason.

And anything off the Beastimilk album, Genocidal Crush for example.

Johnny Yesno

I never liked the Neph, and I was always luke warm towards the Sisters. You're on the money with these, though:

Cure: A Short-Term Effect

It's the track that made me understand Smith's admiration of Beefheart.

Here goes for ten tracks by artists that my goth mates and I were into and that I reckon still stand up to scrutiny:

The Cure - Splintered in Her Head: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=T-NVVcVlIrU (drummer, innit)

The Cure - In Your House: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OsqIXViFpcs (I was a massive Cure fan, okay :-) )

Danielle Dax - Brimstone in a Barren Land: https://youtu.be/k9AFMkHzWo0?t=24m01s

Dead Can Dance - Mother Tongue: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qUihAQ0E0As (did I mention about the drums?)

Echo and the Bunnymen - Over the Wall: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=erKtIsnisp4 (ha, it's not the drums this time suckers, oh shit, I forgot about the drums from about half way through, alright drums then)

New Order - Cries and Whispers: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EgB0Nt8RBcc

Bauhaus - Kick in the Eye: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rb-6ka1y-K8

The Danse Society - Woman's Own: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=poPKl_VvlPg (more drums: don't ever accuse me of being unpredictable)

Killing Joke - Eighties: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=x1U1Ue_5kq8 (because it feels like it's still true)

The Cult - 83rd Dream: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LtSmHaF3VHc (you guessed it: drums)

Johnny Yesno

Btw, Doc, if you don't know Splintered in Her Head, I reckon it'll be up your alley. Much in common with the Dax sound. I wish they'd pursued this direction more.

Bently Sheds

What on Earth's going on here? The music sounds right, but the look is a bit... off.

Heh, it's Silicone Valets.

Drab Majesty: what a terrible name for a band. Also, Audiotree could do with hiring a steadicam. And keeping it out of shot around mirrors.

sevendaughters

also Maskull has the most goth voice of all time, hands down, there is none more goth

Johnny Yesno

Not a goth band but I'm putting this here because it's a great song and the singer sounded like Pete Murphy:

Scissor Fits - Radio Teeth: https://youtu.be/sNQ_JC4cfz8?t=30m12s

Ha, I didn't spot that before. Right, here goes...

The Cure - Jumping Someone Else's Train / Another Journey By Train: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ln_SBYTDuE0

The Cure - Splintered in Her Head: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=T-NVVcVlIrU (mentioned upthread)

The Cure - Other Voices: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BnwTjTR1NmY

the cure 09 At Night: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Yy227XmOqkc

Three Imaginary Boys: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SoBEazNQW48

The Top: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sO2ug58jzPk

A Short Term Effect: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=n57TT0EJBm0 (also mentioned upthread)

THE CURE Give Me It Live Oxford: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5TXasGI4feo

Throw Your Foot: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-ufB5swQz38

The Cure - A Man Inside My Mouth - Quadpus: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lCPKAcZlpkk

Cult Hero - I Dig You (1979): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nMRL-VMQ2E0

In short, I recommend checking out Seventeen Seconds, Faith, Pornography and the b-sides from the Standing on a Beach compilation before you totally write off the Cure.

If you're bringing in The Cure, you have to include All Cats Are Grey. Goth before mandatory barre chords.

It's an incredible track but I didn't want to make the Doc cry. That's some deep, deep gloom, right there, unlike the tedious bilge they were putting out by Disintegration.

Proper doomed out. But Disintegration has some decent shit. I dragged my brain to sleep listening to that on my battery-operated Walkman in the olden days and it was fine.

bigfatheart

Killing Joke - Chop-Chop (if only because the chorus to this creeps to the fore of my mind on a near daily basis)
Siouxsie and the Banshees - Cities in Dust

And from Dr Rock's original post, I would like to very, very strongly second the nomination of Plan 9, Channel 7.

a duncandisorderly

got to be "bela lugosi" if we're picking tunes by northampton's finest, but my shout goes to these guys-

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3CgNymWt5_I

I was at this show in late 1982- the virgin prunes were the support act & gavin's antics almost got the newborn c4 shut down a week or so later.

hermitical

Here are a few favourites, maybe not full on Batcave but there we go

Play Dead - Isabel
Cindytalk - It's Luxury
Red Lorry Yelloy Lorry - Talk About The Weather
The Sisterhood - Rain From Heaven
(I know it doesn't get much love but I do really like Gift)

buzby

For the Sisters, it has to be the overblown Steinman production on the full version of Dominion/Mother Russia for me, Clive. However, for uber-goth points, there's the ridiculous vocal (including a verse in German!) on Marian.

For Siouxsie & The Banshees, it has to be Spellbound.

New Order - Cries and Whispers: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EgB0Nt8RBcc
Phew, I thought for a minute you were going to make the bloody Cries & Whispers-Mesh mistake there (though Mesh is a good candidate too). For 'goth' New Order (for proof, see Gillian in full 'goth ice queen' mode in the Taras Shevchenko 1981 live video) is has to be something off Movement really - Doubts Even Here has Hook's plummy Curtis impression and Gillian reading a Psalm from The Bible for maximum goth points, but then theres the spiky guitars, swirling pipe organ and Steve's tribal drumming on Denial

Ha, I've been burned too many times before to make that mistake again (~whisper~whisper~ I still had to check which was which before posting, though)

Sacrilege to some, I rather like the Nouvelle Vague version:

Nouvelle Vague - Marian (Full Track): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VGTbHZ4fkMM

I think they managed do their thing while still capturing the doom of the original. In fact, the whole of that album is pretty good. The second album, however, feels phoned in.

For me (Clive) the The Cure one I'd pick is A Forest, especially the one off that album with the black cover and 'Concert' across it.

Compare

Pre-goth: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-CtgAgTqx0w

Post-goth: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IH2ncQ43IKM

Also (because the guitar sound from A Forest is basically reproduced in it): She Sells Sanctuary - the 12" wailing mix)

That album is called Concert, hence having the word 'Concert' across it :-D

My pick upthread of Give Me It is from the same album. The studio version on The Top just doesn't have the same aggression. Andy Anderson was a great drummer. Shame he was a nutcase.
