Just been to see a new production of his 1980 play Strange Fruit. I was sat on the same row as the man himself and also political writer Gary Younge.

I read one of his novels, Cambridge, which was very good. I remember one of his other ones getting a bad review from Hilary Mantel, citing lots of issues which funnily enough I also found with her own historical turkey Wolf Hall  ten years later.

The new edition of the play script, from Oberon, has some memories about being an aspiring writer back in the 70s when CW courses barely existed.

Carly probably thinks this thread is about her.
