Turning Point UK's 'S*** Champagne Socialists Say' video

Started by Monsieur Verdoux, June 20, 2019, 05:30:36 PM

For those who are not familiar, Turning Point UK is a an offshoot of Turning Point USA, an astroturfing organisation funded by dark money to stoke the flames of culture wars on college campuses and build a narrative about conservatives being oppressed in academia, well now for all those living in the UK you get your own Turning Point trying to do the same thing on UK campuses!

Anyway, they put out this bizarre video today which is a Tim and Eric level work of art, watch it: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yAx6FZXSqP0

I'm not great on political stereotypes, but would a champagne socialist be caught dead doing a #FBPE? That and some of the other shite there seems more like centrist dad territory.
Still, at least they managed to hit the same comic notes as The Half-Hour News Hour at a fraction of the budget.

Twed

They really dissed those Hillary-loving communists that exist(?)

those fucking Corbyn-loving #FBPE Hillary worshipping Marxists who love the Guardian

Blumf

Holy crap, they could have hired Sargon for peanuts and it would have been 1000x better than this flat mess (so, just plain shit)

'Orange Man Bad' is like 'Brown Shit Stinky'. Just cos the basic message it conveys is an interminably repeated banality doesn't make it any less of a fundamental truth. I will still never ever understand how so many right wing intellectuals have managed to debase themselves into respecting Trump. It is truly one of the weirdest things about this weird weird decade.

The point of "orange man bad" (and the reason I thought it came from the left) is that a lot of centre-right politics is based on that idea, like everything was fine and dandy before Trump came along. The biggest battle for leftist/socialists is trying to candidates past the liberal "anything but Trump will do so here's a polite institutional racist" blockers.

Johnny Yesno

I doubt this will go on those struggling actors' showreels.

Honestly is the first line he says "true centrism has never been tried". I mean I assume it's supposed to be socialism. But it doesn't sound like it because the audio is fucking terrible.

phantom_power

Right wing cunts in politically unaware and terminally unfunny shocker!

gilbertharding

Well, if the title of the video had just been the first word, at least they would have got something right.

Shame he got #cancelled, because this was good:

Oh... Sam Kriss is back, and he's turned into (?) a massive centrist :(

Don't want to get into a big back and forth, but I think you're being way too kind/optimistic about how the phrase was conceived and the faith in which it's commonly used.  In practice it's nearly always just another dumbo  left-baiting edgelord phrase with none of the positive nuance you ascribe to it above. I take the point that Trump is a symptom and his phenomenon is useful for shedding light on more insidious and often greater evils of others who pose as liberal normalcy, but on the other hand, right now at this moment he's in power, he's shit and he shouldn't be excused his own list of failures and horrors and idiocies just cos they're on plain view for once.

Surprised this video only has 2000 odd views and that it's mainly got positive upvotes on YT. It's getting torn apart all over Twitter so you'd think more would have seen it and it'd be lower rated.

idunnosomename

while it's just a fringe thing on twitter, racism is a big thing on YouTube. its more entertaining for angry white men to sit watching videos you see.

I only really know of it from Shaun etc. but the guy who you join the "mug club" for so you can have a fucking mug that says "i like a conservative man on the internet". fuckin hell.

Maybe. I guess I haven't seen it used much and when I did it was by the left (perhaps appropriating it ironically)

How many socialists does it take to change a lightbulb?
None. They'd get us to do it for them!

Knock knock.
Who's there?
Hillary.
Nope, we're not opening your cell!

Why did the woman cross the road?
To accuse a perfectly decent man of sexual assault because of one drunken grope, the fucking whore, and what else was she expecting dressed like that!
