Lil Nas X

It would be easy for Lil Nas X to cash in on his giant hit Old Town Road and rise on his horse into the sunset, but he's put out a short and sweet EP called '7'. There's not really a bad track on there, and he pulls influence from as many genres as he can, from country to jazz to grunge. One of the highlights is 'C7osure' which he cited as important in coming out as gay. He's also good at twitter, which is rare these days, handling the response to his sexuality reveal with a refreshing amount of ironic detachment https://twitter.com/LilNasX/status/1146159741309247495

For those unfamiliar with his hit Old Town Road, here's the "movie" (it's just a music video) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=w2Ov5jzm3j8

And the afforementioned 'C7osure' https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eLgxYjZEflI

What do you think of this Lil Nas X phenomenon? Viral flash in the pan or a promising new artist? I was unsure during the Old Town Road craze, but now I'd go with the latter.

i saw an interview with him and he was really chatty and smart and it warmed me to him instantly. then i saw a vid of him playing OTR in an elementary school and the kids went wild for it, they knew every word, and it was proper heartwarming.

his music isn't my cup of tea really but charm and a bit of idiosyncrasy will get you far with me. also he stoked the hat country crowd right in the butt simply by existing, so let's love and protect Lil Nas X.

So according to Wikipedia he bought the beats for that Old Town Road track (which yes, I'm out of the loop and have only just heard) ready made for $30. Isn't that a bit like putting a bit of cream on an M&S apple pie and telling your guests it's home made?

Standard nowadays, producers have been shopping beats to rappers for decades.

You say used to but like... he put out two albums last year that made it into a fuckton of year end releases. Guy seems totally fried as far as being a fully operational human being goes but he's still at least a bit of a critical darling.
