What are examples of good / enjoyable sitcom tie-in adverts (if any)? There's been an absolute ton over the years.

The Flintstones once did an excellent one for these weird tube things that were supposed to turn your lungs black.

I'd be so happy if Rob wrote for Red Dwarf again, regardless of the quality. You guys have given me some hope it could happen

Well - except that The Bodysnatcher DVD set came out 12 years ago.  If he was going to return to Red Dwarf during the Dave era I think he’d have already done it.

If we were to flip this on its head, I'd happily watch a sitcom starring the Hofmeister bear.

Wow!  I remember the first one at the time, but have never seen the second one before.  Thanks for those.

There's a couple which are related to The Young Ones.

there was that one the BBC did for the Learning Zone, I think, that had the really incongruous ending where the mystical guru up a mountain turned out to be neil. possibly before The Young Ones had entered the repeats circuit

Darling Fascist Bully Boy, :-)

Oh yes, I vaguely remember that!

Seem to remember seeing some show where they pointed out The NatWest advert was earlier than The Young Ones (though I think he'd played similar characters before that).

Slightly shorter than previous series, but overall about the same quality we've come to expect from the Dave era. A solid 6/10.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6dvSPmVtgew

Nearly 1 month later, and the AA ad has 79k Youtube views and 378 comments.

That's pisspoor isn't it. Assuming it cost 300k to film, that's nearly 4 quid per view.

It may have been viewed by other means though.  Maybe on the telly (I don’t know as I don’t watch your standard telly) or other websites that don’t add to the views on that thing.

Presumably YouTube isnt its primary distribution by any means.

Where'd you pull 300k from?

Also awful shit. Possibly better than series 7 though. But still worse than 8.

It has been on normal telly, yes. There's the previously mentioned radio ad as well.

It's been on normal telly a lot.  I go round the rellies most Tuesday nights, am subjected to ITV, and I usually end up seeing it at least twice.

Presumably they only got away with the dubious claim that the AA will still turn up if you're ''three million years into deep space'' because it's impossible to prove otherwise. Or is this like that car ad years ago that got complaints because it made it look like the car could turn into a skating Transformer robot when in reality it couldn't, but the complaints were rejected on the grounds that it's OK to make claims in an advert that are 'obviously' not true, which is shaky ground for advertising legislation to say the least.

I am tempted to start my own multi-million dollar space agency with a view to taking legal action against the AA three million years from now when I can prove their claims are fraudulent.

You wouldn't have to wait that long to show that Red Bull doesn't give you wings...

FWIW, this is covered by section 3.2 of the Committee of Advertising Practice Code: "Obvious exaggerations ("puffery") and claims that the average consumer who sees the marketing communication is unlikely to take literally are allowed provided they do not materially mislead."

I reckon the first one was referenced in ‘Nasty’ by the overacting postman... ‘Little Squirt, does the one advert, he thinks he’s Dustin Hoffman!’

I've seen this as playing twice in cinemas now thanks to the new Spiderman and Toy Story 4. (If you thought they looked haggard on TV...)
