Dunno about being better, but this is a lovely version of Brass In Pocket by Suede.. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=glf5u5-Gi6U

I'll tell you what's not better, Chrissie Hynde's cover of State Of Independence

It will always be Money by the Flying Lizards.

Definitely can make a case for better than The Beatles, but not Barrett Strong. Though really it's so different in its aesthetic it's hard to make meaningful judgments of better or worse.

Quite a bit of competition for this one, but Ruth Radelet's voice. I dream of laying my head on her lap, being caressed and lullabied, sigh.

Here's my reaction vid:

I think I'm going to stop coming into this thread, I'm obviously not in sync with it.

In agreement. I'd argue there are few things worse. Rock covers generally are dreadful in my opinion, but this is a particularly nowt version.

I saw Disturbed accidentally in 2001. Even by the standard of a Marilyn Manson support they were embarrassing.

I much prefer both The Kingsmen's and The Sonic's versions of Louie Louie to the original.

260 versions of Ain't No Sunshine! Funked up, soully, MOR, reggaefied, jazzy, rocky etc. etc. most of them can be listened to on this page.

For me Ken Boothe just makes it over the original but your preference will say a lot about you, your taste and basic moral character. Temptations, Horace Andy and Eva Cassidy run it close I reckon, all revelatory in their own way.

Mary Beth Maziarz - Daydream Believer

Also Eva Cassidy's Fields Of Gold sounds better than Sting's original, though I was slightly less impressed when after hearing it I acquired a whole CD of hers - and found out she used the same style of arrangement on every song.

difficult to be mean about this when (apparently) she was already terminally ill as she recorded it. it does sound better than sting's version..... & I'd better stop there.

I knew she died young, but I hadn't realised quite so tragically and so early - until I did a quick Google.

Turns out she wasn't just the pretty voice I imagined. On the Songbird comp (presumably the CD I have somewhere) she's credited with the guitars, keys, production and arrangement.

I vaguely recall there was a bit of buzz around her work at some point, though probably before I first noticed Fields Of Gold. I'm sure I'd heard her work a bit earlier, but I distinctly recall hearing Fields Of Gold soundtracking some emotive scenes on an early season of Dawson's Creek.

The latter show was full of great tunes when originally broadcast in the US and UK. Unfortunately the DVD releases really cheaped out on licencing, to the point where I think they even lost Paula Cole's epic I Don't Wanna Wait theme!

Well thats the whole point of a cover for me. It should be different from the original.

the real tragedy is that she couldn't effectively marry her magnificent voice to something she meant herself, & not some rubbish by sting or whoever. one or two covers in a career of performing is sort of understandable- paying tribute to one's influences, sort of thing. the fall, for instance... many fall fans don't even know that 'mr pharmacist' is a cover, & think that they did "ghost in my house" for a laugh.
but a whole career of it seems wrong to me. might be just me.... dunno. seems a waste.

But, in fairness, written with the specific intention that Phil would sing it on the album regardless of who ended up taking over from Gabriel, so it would have been Trick's equivalent of More Fool Me or For Absent Friends.

It's also been a favourite of Phil's since it was recorded, and he was instrumental in putting it forward for the final tour in 2007.

But, of all the Genesis songs that he wrote and/or recorded, I'll grant you it probably doesn't have the strongest personal connection.

At least it wasn't Visions of Angels or Dusk.

Yeah, I'm a pretty big Warren-head but this is in no way better than Prince's.
