Labour have now raised over £1 million from public donations with the average contribution being £26  https://twitter.com/MichaelH14/status/1192554946866098178

Ballad of Ballard Berkley

I attended a Billy Bragg gig in Glasgow the other night. I actually stood up and cheered, not the sort of thing I ever do, when he declared that the antidote to cynicism and apathy is activism. That activism can take the form of tactical voting, donations or hitting the streets with leaflets (or a combination of all three, if you can). It's all good, all great, all important.

We can do this, fuck those utter cunts.

I was in tears by the end of the gig, it hit me in ways I didn't quite expect.

Oh, and his nickname for Johnson is 'Borissey', which made me laugh.

I've seen him so many times, but this last time in August was the most I have ever felt energised by our Bill. We all have to do something.

I am a reluctant voter as my political sympathies have always been Libertarian Socialist. However, I don't think that in my lifetime we will have another truly Socialist leader of a major political party in the UK, and one who might be able to get us out of the neobilberal shithole that is the EU with protections for workers, and restrictions for tax avoiders, big pharma and the banks.

I'm throwing my not inconsiderable weight behind Labour, and proudly so.

Most CLPs are launching their election campaign tomorrow. I'm driving down to Bishop Auckland, for example.

(Just so you know what a martyr I am making of myself.)

Lots of Brexit and Corbyn issues in Bishop. Like before the manifesto came out last time. But we're better prepared now.

I've not been able to do this. The link takes me to a "login with Labour" page, I don't have an account setup, so I go to create account, enter membership no. and email. They send me "create your account" email, link just sends me back to the first "Login with Labour" page. I don't have a password or account to login, so I'm stuck in a permanent loop.

Any advice, folks? Anyone else been in this position and know what to do?

Were the Brexit issues from remainers or leavers?

I've had that a lot too. Normally try (as I'm sure you do) to either explain that now we're aware of what Brexit entails (and how damaging no deal is to our particular constituency), we're offering another vote, or to ask them to consider wider implications of voting for the tories, but usually they seem eager to back up their refusal to vote Labour any more by dredging up shit from the press and ranting about Corbyn. I've not managed to convince many leavers to vote for us, in fact I can only think of one and all he did was promise to keep an open mind and try to look beyond Brexit. I actually suggested we have some literature printed specifically to hand to these people as it certainly seems like it could be a major factor in us not winning.

I haven't heard anything from Momentum about the phone app thing and they now seem to be advocating 'phone bank parties' and I'm not doing one of them. Did I dream that Momentum let me sign up for the phone app thing?

The 'moderates' have a lot to answer for. Not only have they put Remainers off from voting Labour, they've pushed Leavers away as well. Way to go.

Bear in mind that at this point in the campaign a lot of people want to let off steam. And the fact that you'll stand there and listen to it probably gets the party a lot of brownie points. And you also gave them a leaflet. So if they're standing in the polling booth and a Tory never managed to canvass them, then you've got a good chance they'll tick the Labour box.

But get it off Brexit as soon as you can, it's just fucking poison. I've been experimenting with: 'To be honest with you, I really don't think Corbyn cares about Brexit at all, beyond protecting jobs. The sort of thing that fires him up is giving every child a free school meal, or nationalising the railways, or getting all the private companies out of the NHS'. So you bounce straight off Brexit and into the good stuff.

You know what – I think this might actually be the truth. His characterisation of being "pro-Brexit" is, I think, a misreading of this.

This is so true, and people care far more about other issues when they're reminded of them. Brexit has become this kind of all-consuming litmus test of political positioning, but it's actually a vapid husk of a thing in the everyday; just an excuse to grandstand in the most meaningless way. Remind people of what affects them and let them know there's only one major party (in England) who can represent their interests.

Being an expat overseas, I feel somewhat helpless but have volunteered to do what I can from far away.

I dont care about brexit either way and it amazes me how people on both sides are quite common and quite bloody bonkers

Yeah it's now two weeks since I signed up and there's not a sign of progress. They've even changed the categories to add more, which is a bizarre choice. Really dissapointingly slow response from Momentum.

Just got an email from them, seems like there were some problems. The calling team ( I guess this is the phone app, as the email is called 'Campaign for Jeremy from home!') is an option, and I've signed up again in case they lost my data.

QuoteCampaign for Jeremy from home!

These volunteer teams are a great way to get involved if canvassing isn't for you. The following teams are already up and running:

🔎 Research Team
📞 Calling Team
📱 Texting Team
💻 Data Entry Team
🎬 Clipping Team

We'll also be launching a Translation Team over the next few days - so keep your eyes peeled for that!

We're aware that some of you may have already told us you're interested in joining a team, and not heard back from us. This was due to a problem with our online database, and we're very sorry about this - please click here to join a team now!

Yes, amazing news. Do wish they could have just been honest and told me that but there we go, I will TRY to get over it.

Dr Rock

I knocked this up, feel free to post it about and whatnot

idunnosomename

if tory canvassers come round your gaff do NOT under ANY circumstances tell them to fuck off.

talk to them. be friendly. "oh I've always voted Labour, but I just want this Brexit business finished, soooo..."

then just chat basic talking points about social care. then conclude that indeed, voting labour is best for you. as voting tory would leave you markedly worse off.

then you've wasted their precious time and also made them think how fucking evil they are. it should also help you in door knocking yourself if you choose to take it up.

holyzombiejesus

Please could someone do me a favour?

That Labour Party Graphic Designers twitter account that I've mentioned a few times have just started dropping a few Election posters that people can print off for free. I can only access the account on my phone (blocked at work) but I want to access the google drive that the posters are stashed on so I can print some off to take to our local campaign planning meeting tonight. Please could someone post the link to the google drive?

You should be able to get it through https://twitter.com/labourdesign

Thanks.

holyzombiejesus

Thanks anyway. Our local campaign/ ideas get together was a bit frustrating in that it was just someone getting us all to sign up for canvassing/ market stall/ phone campaigning and no real opportunity for new ideas. I was going to suggest canvassing specific types, like care homes or rail commuters; does anyone have experience of targeting those groups?

idunnosomename

i mean i agree in that I hate pestering people at the doorstep and even more on the phone. such old-fashioned ways of doing things. unfortunately I think a lot of local party offices have staff with sclerotic and unimaginative ways of doing things. not sure if it's better in cities/inside the M25. but I think those are great strategies. chatting round a care home or a train might really be not too bad compared to ringing someones bell and annoying them (although canvassing is as much about gathering data on potential voters as anything else)

holyzombiejesus

I imagine there might be some rules about going in to care homes and speaking to elderly residents but when you consider the amount of people living in these types of accommodation, how isolated they might be from canvassing and what a positive message Labour can offer, it's strange to me that we don't have a dedicated team to go in, register them to vote, discuss policy and them offer lifts to on polling day. Equally, this constituency is so badly served by Northern Rail, you'd think that approaching seriously pissed off commuters waiting for another delayed train with a positive message about how things can be improved would be a given. Frustrating.

This is literally what Mandelson did. He was famous for it. I heard all about it last year when I was campaigning in Hartlepool.
