Recently awarded Ph.D at York which is entitled 'Naive Realism, Imaginative Disjunctivism, and The Problem of Misleading Experience.' Interested in perception, imagination (esp. its relation to the latter), consciousness, epistemology, and time.

She started a postdoc at York but left last year. I dont think she has a job anywhere. TERFin' 's a grind

Unbelievable that those are her specialisms but rather than all that stuff on perception leading to an open and inclusive worldview they've studied all that and decided everyone else's perceptions are wrong and only they're right. What a charlatan.

Addressing yourself as "Dr" when you just have a PhD is a giant red flag of the Federated States of 'Can I Speak to Your Manager'.

I don't see the issue: the 'D' in Ph.D stands for 'doctor', doesn't it?  That's what a doctor is

I am secretly pleased that everyone hates Graham Linehan now because I have considered him a hack for decades. If this is the sort of thing it takes for people to agree with me then so be it.

When should you address yourself as Dr?

When should you address yourself as Dr?

When your qualification is relevant to the situation, or if you practice medicine.

Or if you're having some nice stationary made up.

If you put dr in your twitter handle, people will naturally assume you're an MD. So don't do that.

When should you address yourself as Dr?

When you perhaps rather blindly idolise a fictional plastic surgeon who is a complete bastard in 2006 and decide to use his name as your own on a forum you didn't necessarily expect to still be posting on 13 years later.

Why is being mistaken for an MD over Twitter a big deal exactly? You're being weird, de_sad.

QDRPHNC

In the minds of most people, "Dr" confers an unconscious bias towards thinking the person is highly capable and intelligent, as we expect MDs to be. Which is exactly why people like this woman use them in their Twitter handles.

Yeah but someone intent on bullshitting needn't have a doctorate of any kind in order to do so. Their cover's blown the moment someone queries their medical credentials either way.

People think you're intelligent when you say you've got a PhD, because you actually have got a PhD?

The world's gone mad!

'Doctor', as in General Practitioner, is a term of courtesy.  Ph.Ds are actually doctors.  MD, in the medical field in Britain stands for muscular dystrophy.  If people don't know what 'doctor' means, it'd be better if they found out for themselves rather than mangling the language to accommodate their ignorance.

I don't give a shit about Graham Linehan either way, incidentally.

Should people trust Daves just because they're Daves?

Trust them to do what? I can at least trust them to have the expertise they say they've got, if they're speaking on something they're qualified to speak about.

So how does a Twitter handle factor into that scenario?

Because she says this sort of thing:

Anyone reading that would be forgiven for thinking the 'Dr' is supposed to be relevant.

The question I'd have is how they know what feeling female is like.  If you can't tell someone else how they feel, how can the potentially transgender person know what someone else feels like, too?  It has to work both ways and the prof appears to have not noticed the failure in terms of internal logic in her own argument.

Has anyone considered that it's not the qualification that's the problem here, but the fact that they're women.*

*nb: irony.

Is her doctorate in philosophy? I'm not saying she's not a cunt but it's a bit of a stretch to say it's not relevant.

NoSleep

She's claiming that they are deluded in feeling they are female; the three comparisons being conditions of delusion; she's saying they are mentally ill.
