Just popping in to stand up for Harry & Paul's later stuff, most of which still has me crumpled in admiration and mirth. There is no need to defend The Fast Show. Just watch it. So many great moments from a skilled team. Lucky? Whitehouse deserves his luck.

Yeah Paul Whitehouse is great.

Wholehearthealthily agree.  100%.

Paul Whitehouse is a fabulous comedy character actors, one of if not the best around.

He gets a free pass from me as does anybody to do with the sublime Down the Line.

Kalabi

Why did they have Farrage on Harry & Paul in that sketch where they're both being Gervais?

Yeah, no excuse for that. I expect Harry is a brexit wanker

Dunno about the Brexit wanker bit, but he's a Lib-Dem/tory combo so it could go either way.  BUT Farage was big news at the time and I seem to remember he was on pretty much every show going (although in reality it was probs just HIGNFY and whatever other shit political comedy/sketch show was on then).

Kalabi

I suppose its a hindsight thing, but it feels like Johnson on HIGNFY boosting his popularity. Giving airtime (on anything really) to Farrage just gives oxygen to the ball bag.

+2

The Fast Show is still very funny and full of charm. 'Harry & Paul' is almost as funny, and much funnier than Enfield's solo projects.

"Story of the 2s" might be their finest moment.

Pranet

I'd love a new series from Enfield and Whitehouse.

Twed

Paul's finest moment is Help! IMO, although that's been erased from history.

Pranet

Yes Help! was great. Chris Langham was really talented. Stupid fucking bastard.

Sticking to my guns, here. Paul Whitehouse has never been that funny, the vast majority of " The Fast Show" is unwatchable nowadays,it gave a platform to the excruciatingly unfunny Arrabella Weir, the funniest characters therefrom were played by Charlie Higson, and " Bellamy's People" was a load of self- indulgent lazy old bollocks. Nah, don't bother writing a script , or owt. Just get a bit of decent make up on y'all, and make it up as you go along. After all, you've got the likes of that massively talented woman from Tittytittybangbang in your cast, you're all bound to spin comedy gold from your Mike Leigh method played for big belly laffs concept.

It's very regrettable, but the joke is that (unlike Gervais) this awful guy is the best celeb they can nab. Though they probably didn't phrase it like that to him.

I remember reading that Enfield is in favour of fox hunting... but that could be bollocks.

I think this was what started it 20 years ago. He might think differently now, if it wasn't just a pisstake in the first place.

Quote from: Harry EnfieldIf I may briefly summarise the foxhunting debate in as unbiased a way as is possible: some people think foxhunting is a good, fun healthy outdoor pursuit that preserves a part of our fast-dying culture and much of our countryside; and others are muddle-headed soppy dates who think that everyone who hunts is a haughty toff, and they don't like haughty toffs, so they'd like to spoil their fun? Most antis don't care much for foxes, they just enjoy a bit of aggro, chasing the toffs and shouting.

Appalled to see Whitehouse getting a panning on this prestigious comedy forum full of knobheads. Appalled. The Fast Show is a fucking masterclass in sketch comedy which has aged tremendously, a damn sight more than so many other shows of its type. Not only is Paul a fantastic comedy character actor (tbh I'd say almost unparalleled in terms of sheer diversity) he also displays genuine heart and beauty in a way that is so quintessentially British, loathe as I am to use such a phrase but it's fucking true.

Examples include (from The Fast Show) Ted and Ralph, Rowley Birkin, (from Help!) Monty the old Jewish chap coping with his wife's dementia, the very bolshy character who suddenly frankly admits he doesn't know who he is, and swathes of stuff on Down The Line.

Luck is not a factor whatsoever. He is a superb talent, one of the best we'll see. If you're expecting him to be hilarious in his day to day existence you're a mug and you may as well be asking some cunt who's good at writing songs to be poetic and metered and insightful in every thing they say as well. Get shagged. Literally go and shag yourself through a wall and keep shagging yourself until you're off a cliff and splattered all over the rocks with what's left of your genitals loosely assembled around the hand on the end of your twisted and gnarled arm. I won't hear another word on it. LOCK THE FUCKIGNG THEREAD

If I'm reading the sarcasm right and you're using Tittybangbang as a measure of shitness, it's worth remembering that a certain Mr B Mortimer had a heavy hand in writing that. (And it was shit)

Another big nod from over here.  Great post.

pigamus

I think fishing is something Paul does to get away from it all, and he's finding having Bob there difficult to get used to. If you took the fishing out I think he'd be more comfortable and less grumpy. But then obviously you don't have a show.

Neomod

It's been an easy watch but the soundtrack is shocking. Really naff choices. They would have been better off with an original score.

He is (still, I believe) pro-hunting.  One of the numerous things him and his dad (an old school labour socialist) disagreed on politically.  I remember when they were both on...possibly The One Show politely arguing about it, and it's also been mentioned in various writings about him, presumably because it's such an unlikely thing for him to be for/involved with (I don't actually know if he goes hunting himself or is just for it in principle) given his background.

The Whitehouse/Fast Show negative nancies are, rightly, in the minority.  Which is fine.  I mean, it's their opinion and that.

Yes, much as he is in the Adam Buxton podcast with Bob.

It's possible that the Fast Show doesn't hold up nowadays - I  dunno, I haven't seen it since it went out - but the idea that Bellamy's People was shit? That's... just not correct.

Nah, most of it does.  And the speed it whips along is still fairly unique, so even the shit characters/sketches are over in no time.

neveragain

There's definitely a variety in quality (I'm least fond of Arabella Weir's own characters though she's great in other sketches) but most of it is still high.

Surely his late father Edward was a curmudgeonly, the-world-ended-in-1960 reactionary of the Richard Ingrams/Auberon Waugh stamp?

Scrapey Fish

Whitehouse also stood out in a strong cast in the Death of Stalin
