Comedy groups that are actually brilliant.

As someone who unironically loves Spinal Tap and Tenacious D, are there many groups/artists out there that are a tongue in cheek ironic act but you can also appreciate unironically as being great music?

I am maybe thinking Electric Six, too, but i'm not 100%. Rammstein?

Jerzy Bondov

I really love Bus Driver's Song by Flight of the Conchords, which isn't in the TV series (except as an instrumental). I think it's really nice. I love it when Jermaine comes in on the harmonies and then Bret switches to singing a few lines later. When it gets wistful about Paula I think it's a genuinely pretty song. Bret's silly 'take take take-ah me back' goes a bit far maybe but that 'yeah sorry about that' brings it back. Yeah, good on yer.

Rutles in Not Cited In Opening Post scandal.

The Lonely Island have some excellent, nihilistic, stupid and accurate hip-hop parodies. I'm sure they probably get dismissed for their Jizz In My Pants silliness, but they're genuinely really good. There's lots of gems on their albums, such as 'I Fucked My Aunt' ft. T-Pain https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kVFjaOyAWd4

Laibach are funnier, and are actually actually brilliant at times (cf: their Germanicised version of Queen's One Vision, Geburt einer Nation).

Blues Brothers. It's sort of obvious to say they were good musically, because it was a supergroup of legendary soul/r&b session musicians, but John Belushi was also a genuinely good singer (Dan Aykroyd not as much..)

I like Lonely Island.
They're funny and make me laugh.

Some of their best stuff isn't even on an album, like

Threw It On The Ground is on their second album, but yes they definitely should have released Iran So Far. And this one https://youtu.be/WRu_-9MBpd4

Aw yeah I like that one, it's properly bittersweet.

Although I don't think 'Carol Brown/Girlfriends from the Past' is one of their better songs lyrically/comedically, I do really like the female harmonies, and the fact it's got an omnichord in it (Jemain Clement is something of an enthusiast IRL, I've heard): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8U2a-Sl2IaM

Captain Crunch

Mac Sabbath always put on a really good show.

It might have been a sample clearance problem

They Might be Giants.

Tune into Absolute Radio. They play that Birdhouse In Your Soul one every single day. Without fail. And considering that I only ever have that station on in the car, the number of times I hear it is quite frightening.

I still have a soft spot for The Barron Knights. I liked their singles when I was a kid.

Cuellar

Tim Heidecker. Is he a comedy artist? Don't know.

Urinal Cake

Boyzvoice (the movie) had songs a that re a great parody of late 90s and early 2000s pop. Catchy, clever and well produced.

12 Year Old woman (Backstreet Boys parody)  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XVrHvo_OssE
We are the Playmomen (Aqua parody) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CUQppklf1vM

Not so much a group but a record label, Turquoise Jeep.

I highly recommend Cavities and Go Grab My Belt but there's a ton of great stuff on their YouTube.

Mac Sabbath are amazing. How the fuck they don't die of heat exhaustion in those ridiculous outfits I'll never know.

Blue Jam

Didn't Confidence Man start out as a comedy band before realising they were quite good and taking the music a bit more seriously?

They Might be Giants.

They are as much a comedy band as Ween are, which is not at all.

McChesney Duntz

Puce Moment

I'm going to put my neck on the line and say that a couple of Richard Cheese's cover songs are pretty fucking good.

And of course KUNT AND THE GANG!

A Lonely Wank in a Travelodge is quite a moving song if you look beyond the filth.

Sometimes I do it in front of the mirror
Just to feel like there's someone else there
But all I see is my crying self
Wanking back at me in despair

Gets me every time, that.

Ditto Rammstein. Having a sense of humour does not a comedy group make.

kalowski

The answer is either The Black Abbots or the Barron Knights.

Gregory Torso

This isn't a comedy group, because fuck that, but this track by Brujeria (duds from famous metal bands pretending to be mexican druglords for the laffos) is taking the piss and yet is better than anything they ever did "seriously"  Don Quijote Marijuana

It's not the latter.
I accidentally heard their dentist song the other day and it caused shit to pour from my ears.
