I think Perfume are good but not great. I probably could pick it apart if I had to but it just a bit to obvious. Nothing quirky enough to really raise it to genius or silly enough. Amazing dresses though. If you ploughing and EDM line it has to have a bit more to make it more than EDM. If you know what I mean?

I assume we all know PC Music and Danny L Harle? London based producers who take elements of all this shit and ramp it up to 11. I saw him DJing in Primavera. As Blods once said on here his stuff is full of "obnoxious elements" but to be it's the way one plays with them that makes them tolerable.

Hannah Diamond's Hi is the obvious reference point...

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mKztreA6e7Y

..but this DJ set which wouldn't be out of place in late 90s anti-dance music, IDM/Electronica set really reveals the soul of what they are trying to do. At Primavera we had Sophie and Danny Harle DJ sets pushing the fringes of this stuff whilst Charli XCX and Carly Rae were blasting their version of it on main stages to huge crowds. Love it.

Early-mid Perfume is good, catchy electro-pop. KPP is stupid fun. Capsule (same producer- Yasutaka Nakata ) is the more interesting stuff. But most of it is a half a decade to a decade old  so has been copied etc a lot.

Actually Yasutaka Nakata is sort of brilliant.

Thumbs up to both of those. They sit in that nice middle ground between old-school dance and lo-fi house but still have that J-Pop vibe in the chorus. I approve. That Ez do track is very much like that Danny Harle set I posted. Oh the joys of a cyclical dance music scene.

One of the (downsides) of my increased love of all things pop is I am having insane earworms. Sigrid and now ITZY are literally living in my head. Not just the odd hook or vocal line but entire songs... I can HEAR the songs.

Probably should stop staying up all night drinking brandy and listening to the same song an over and over for 3 hours at a time. I found some scientific paper linking OCD and earworms (I don't have anything close to OCD other than having to check locked doors a few times when leaving the house and like a bit of alcohol hand wash) but I suggest they have cause and consequence the wrong way round.

Can post and not leave a new track to recommend... I'll have a look... nah.. nothing particularly ace tonight. Next time.

Edit: Oh wait... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HDsfCdn5UfY This is nice but again missing something for me.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fVqgn6xULbk I'm feeling this but suspect she has a much better banger in her that this isn't.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7o7obH7ge2Q I like this.

I'm into anime soundtracks now... oh wait. This is a fucking banger.

Got my own little place to express. :)

Found this https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iRw4kL1CMI8

They are just so amazing. There is something about dance that I just adore. My sister always goes to see that fella who does the shoes stuff. Should go. Though TBF it's the tiniest thing that gets me. I don't want to post all my gifs but Sigrid, Aphex, Twice, Bjork; there are the tiniest moments that just make me so happy.

Anyway... enjoy.

(Oh it's the peak a boo dance that I am talking about). They reckon it costs up to $3,000,000 per member to train a k-pop star. That mean TWICE (or BTS) has $30 million spent on them before they even release a record. As someone who knew a prick who managed a very popular UK guitar band who snorted and pissed their £300k advance up his arse that is incredible value.

P.s. What the fuck does DALLA DALLA mean ITZY fans? Is it the literal different or dollar or something else?

lazarou

QuoteP.s. What the fuck does DALLA DALLA mean ITZY fans? Is it the literal different or dollar or something else?

It means 'different' (going hand in hand with the English EP title 'ITZ Different'). The song is basically 'I look different, people think I'm some punk but I don't give a fuck. I'm not like other girls and I love it'. As you can probably tell this is very much their thing, they're laser-focused on the being the quirky rebels to TWICE's perfect dream girls. Pretty obvious stuff but it's a winning combination when you've got groups of this calibre.

I absolutely love a good dance clip so I'll have a dig around for some all-timers.

lazarou

Anyway here's a few of my fave dance performances.

Hard to talk about dance clips without mentioning LOONA's two recently. It was already clear they were strong performers but it wasn't until their take on BTS' Fire that they really showed what they could do. Their follow-up dance cover of NCT127's Cherry Bomb was if anything even better. There's just a fierceness to their performances that really elevates it to another level. Seeing them live at a festival was basically witnessing an entire sports arena's jaws hit the floor.

Fierce though they are, they can't quite hit the heights of the dance clip for SAAY's recent solo debut. Years ago SAAY debuted with a girl group who flopped so hard few fans really remember them at all, but as a genuinely gifted dancer she cut out a career for herself as a choreographer, finally coming back this year with the absolute powerhouse of a performance that was ZGZG. For all the (often deserved) claims of K-Pop being an assembly line this to me is a clear case of an artist thriving in her element. It's early days but very excited to see where she goes from here.

Definitely not one of their better songs but the clip for Red Velvet's Rookie is still a great showcase for their skills. Lead dancer Kang Seulgi (all in black with the ponytail there) is considered one of the best dancers of her generation and here you can really see why.

Momoland's BAAM clip isn't the most complex routine you'll ever see but it really captures their high-energy style and is one of the few here you could realistically expect to find yourself embarrassing yourself to in the mirror. Extremely fun and catchy moves.

Dreamcatcher - Good Night is a great example of how DC style their choreo to go with their pop-metal sound. Sharp formations and sweeping arm moves are very much the order of the day.

Random aside but Dreamcatcher are a very rare and unusual example of a group hitting much stronger on their second go round. They initially promoted for years as the vastly different sexy-cute outfit Minx, before adding a couple of members and basically doing a total reboot. Another group where the members seem genuinely close as most of them had already flopped together before they even properly started. Theirs was the only proper fanmeeting I've been to so far and they were so charming and seemingly delighted to see all their foreign fans it was genuinely heartwarming (they're a rare example of a K-Pop group who are a considerably bigger deal overseas and basically unknown in their homeland).

Heading into boyband territory and EXO's Growl is iconic for a reason. Simply an incredible routine delivered flawlessly.

It is the absolute height of electropop boyband cheese but Teen Top - Rocking is a hell of a performance. The whole thing's basically a series of setups for those massive synth breaks and when they land and the boys start gliding around the room between formations it's something else.

Seventeen are probably the best dance performers I've ever seen as a group, there's no end of the fuckers but they're all in such perfect sync with each other it's uncanny.

Thanks. TBF a lot of that (like a lot k-pop and pop in general) is quite good. The best dancing is SEVENTEEN but i'm yet to hear a single male K-pop song that I like... either too Backstreet Boys or just not my thing - so liking that is high praise.

More broadly none of this stuff is bad but that why Fancy has thrown me. It is SO much better than everything else.

Their comeback single which is being teased sounds like it is on that vein. Their fanbase is ridiculous, 5 million views for a snippet of a member because she now no longer has bangs. The member who suffered anxiety is also back and they've said this album will be doing different and personal etc- so we'll see how that turns out.
Fancy was supposed to be a more mature sound/concept but a few people seemed disappointed. It was alright.

I've got a soft spot for that kind of big '00s Max Martin kind of boy band thing so that probably served me well there. I'll certainly agree that boy bands tend on a whole to be much less musically interesting, you've generally got your big, brash backstreet boys efforts or god help us some wannabe SWEG, vaguely hip-hop-flavoured outfit. Girl groups have their cliches too but they seem a lot more likely to steer further off-center.

One things I'll give basically every group credit for, of either gender - discographies are generally stuffed with high-energy bangers. Back as a casual pop fan in the late '90s it felt like every other single would be an intolerable ballad, it was a grim time. Here if they're there at all they're buried in the back-end of an album, where they should be. There are ballad specialists like Taeyeon but they're more part of the Korean Drama OST set and that's kind of a different scene. You'll see a couple turn up on Music Bank (basically a Korean TOTP) but they'll be vastly in the minority.

I say 'a Korean TOTP' because Korea has several. There are six major ones I can think of, they all broadcast weekly, episodes typically run well over an hour and everyone performs in-studio. Playing a music video in place of a group would be borderline unheard of (meaning it's also almost exclusively domestic acts). A promoting group will be doing TOTP almost every day of the week. I still find it possibly the oddest aspect of the whole genre how so many shows are even sustainable. Even as a massive fan I can't be arsed catching more than one every so often when I want a broader idea of what's going on. They are an experience though.

QuoteMore broadly none of this stuff is bad but that why Fancy has thrown me. It is SO much better than everything else.

I'm fascinated why that one landed so hard in particular for you, but that's part of the magic of a good pop song I suppose. Sometimes just the one is all you really need. In my early days all I needed to hear was Hyuna's Bubble Pop and 2NE1's I Am The Best and whenever I tried something else I'd generally find it enjoyable enough but kind of bounce off it. It took a serious bit of personal delving around before it really got its hooks in me. Personally my song of the year so far is quickly becoming ICY, I loved it from the off but it has been digging itself into my head something fierce ever since. It actually turned up as PopJustice's Song Of The Week recently, which was oddly validating.

QuoteFancy was supposed to be a more mature sound/concept but a few people seemed disappointed. It was alright.

I would love to see them try something more bold, they've absolutely got the star power to pull that off by now but they just seem to be making so much money nobody wants to rock the boat too much. I feel like Fancy was definitely a step in the right direction (I've been a fan since the start but they lost me with 'Yes or Yes' so it was a nice course correction) but I'd love to see them go full Wonder Girls and just strike out with their own distinct thing.

Anyway let's have some more new music with CLC's Devil, a surprisingly lean production that hangs off an insistent, muted guitar riff. They're a strong group anyway but this is probably their best yet for me.

Urinal Cake

The company is pretty conscious of what it's doing which for now is giving into the demands of the members and fans especially after one member publicly takes time off for mental health. That's why I don't think the lack of change is entirely from management or even being beholden to the fans. For some of the members the 'girls next door' or cute thing is not entirely an act. Who knows maybe Twice doesn't have to go the well worn route of pop by going dark, heavy, conflicted, sexual etc and make something else work.

Crowd cheering is a laughter track yeah? They sing along to bit but then there is a random cheer in the inbetween bit. It not legit is it? Don't get me wrong the live version is ace but that crowd noise sounds fake as fuck. If it isn't it has blown my mind on levels I can't even explain.

I used to think they used to ship in conscripters because of the male voices https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kda_53A0ZpI but no Twice fans generally tend to be male and older (known as 'uncles'- nice or pervy) so yeah it's pretty legit.   I gather the cheering is for their favourite member.

If that audience is legit then that is fucking insane. They singing along with some lines then holding a cheer over others. I'm not saying it's NOT legit but if it is it's a level of coordination that impresses me way beyond what I thought even the mad rigour of k-pop is capable of. There's a specific form to fanchants and yeah, a hardcore fan would know them by heart. If you watch live performances you'll hear them for any big group. A telltale sign of a fanchant is the crowd yelling the members names in sequence early in the song, often in the opening. You can see TWICE performing a guide for one here https://youtu.be/o2PHqq19ufM

I so much want to be an audience for this but not knowing what the fuck is going on. The cult level of being part of it sounds fun but being surrounded by an entire audience who are in on something that I have no idea of just sounds like heaven. I love being aware of cults but would rather admire them from the sides than actively take part. It's a bit like how the perfect Neil Hamburger experience is being the one person in the room who doesn't boo the fuck out of him for being shit (or, if following Twitter, the annoyingly self-centred - but come on of course it's the sweet spot of white priviledge - to be the only 外銀 in a japanese wrestling show).

I'm increasingly interested into the UFC and I think the common theme is just how awesome it is that there are people who have such brilliant appreciation of their own bodies. Coordination. Whether it's dance or fighting it is so far removed from my own experience... but these practice videos are something else.

There are some awful, awful fans, I'll give you that. Stan Twitter is an impressively toxic place where people seem to veer between cancelling other idols because they looked at their faves funny and blindly defending similar faves for doing absolutely despicable shit. Of course this is just the worst of the bunch, but twitter does have a way of amplifying the loudest characters in a space which kind of pushes the fandoms in general towards normalising that nonsense and yeah, it's a lot. Just the other day some poor girl got her account suspended for posting a meme saying a BTS member's new haircut made him look like Willy Wonka from the remake. This was a dyed-in-the-wool fan of this member in particular and it didn't seem malicious in any way, just a silly visual gag. Didn't matter, the swarm came and they're gone. That's a very minor example but in a way that just made it scarier. In fairness the general reaction was "what the fuck is wrong with these people" but that didn't stop it happening.

There are a lot of real-life examples of mental fans, but it's actually somewhat better than it used to be, probably because the agencies are better equipped to deal with this stuff now. There are stories of the first and second-gen groups from the '90s-'00s and it makes the idol scene back then sound like the fucking wild west. TVXQ fans or 'Cassies' are still talked about to this day as the most insane fandom the industry has ever seen, and if you'd like to find out a few of the reasons why, here's a chunk of nightmare fuel I've copy-pasted off reddit:

Quote
TVXQ are a kpop boy band who debuted back in 2003. At their peak (around 2006-2009) they were HUGE. They are still pretty famous (especially in Japan) but back in the day their popularity was unmatched, probably comparable with BTS today. But with that level of fame came hordes of sasaengs, or obsessive stalker fans. And we're not talking, like, people who try to book the same flight as Blackpink or something. TVXQ were stalked on the daily for years and the things that these "fans" did to them are unimaginable. Groups today have it pretty bad with crazy fans but thankfully I don't think the level to which TVXQ were terrorized by their sasaengs will ever be reached again. The members actually received psychological counselling for what they went through.

Most of the things listed in this post happened before 2010. Also keep in mind they all started out very early (ages ranged from 15-17 at debut) so they were basically teenagers/barely adults when this was going down.

So, without further ado, here are a few horrifying examples:

Yunho poisoning (2006): Yunho was poisoned by an anti-fan. Yep, you read that right. He drank an orange juice drink given to him by a fan, who had laced it with super glue. He was rushed to the hospital and had to get his stomach pumped. The girl was arrested but Yunho actually requested not to press charges. He was so traumatized by the incident he considered quitting and wouldn't drink out of a bottle until someone else had taken a drink first.

"Private" taxis: There were on average 150 taxis following TVXQ around on any given day. Sasaeng fans paid exorbitant fees to taxi drivers to drive them around for the day and trail/blockade TVXQ's van. Some private taxis hit and damaged the members' personal cars. One member said they developed a fear of taxis and had to get therapy for it. One fan was hit by a private taxi and Yunho tried to help her; this caused a bunch of other sasaengs to fake being hit or intentionally try to get hit afterward. There's an old video circulating of Changmin opening a taxi door and violently dragging a woman out of the car - not saying his actions were excusable but you probably understand where he was coming from. Fans also closed a taxi window on Changmin's hand while he was trying to shoo them away and caused him to bleed. The fans posted this and enjoyed it, saying it was "rare". Fans also BROKE Changmin's pinky finger at one point but I'm not sure how it happened.

Jaejoong recording (2012): There's a recording of Jaejoong secretly taken by a fan who was following him after he went drinking. He (drunkenly) cusses her and other sasaengs out, talking about how he is constantly followed, feels like a convict, would rather live as a prisoner, was forced to go to Japan for his vacation days because he has no freedom in Korea, etc. It also sounds like he's hitting them. Pretty disturbing stuff. One sasaeng said afterward: "I usually wait in front of oppas' dorm, and when they move, I take a cab and follow after them... I wanted to see a side of them that others can't see. I was ready to put up with the violence and the cussing. I just liked seeing them up close." There are also much shorter recordings of Yoochun and Junsu who respectively cuss out and plead with sasaengs.

Airports: Hordes of fans will crowd around idols around at airports to get pictures and such. TVXQ were endlessly groped and each member was groped in a specific location (??!!) - for example, Junsu was mostly groped at his butt and Jaejoong was groped at his arms. I don't believe this happened at an airport but a fan threw a bag of rocks at Changmin and screamed how he doesn't deserve to die peacefully. A video of this can be easily found.

Phones: Fans blocked service to TVXQ's phones and checked calls and contacts to see if any were girls. Jaejoong said (on a TV show) that he texted Yoochun if he wanted to come out and got a reply asking who he was and why he was messaging Yoochun. Another member changed his phone number and received a text message shortly afterwards asking why he changed his number.

"Gifts": Menstrual blood, underwear, shitting on their doorstep, etc. The usual.

Yoochun parking lot CCTV (2012): Some fans somehow installed cameras in Yoochun's garage. In screencaps he can be seen being very cautious and hiding behind walls to scan for sasaengs before walking out into HIS OWN HOME.

This post is huge so I'm going to stop, but there is a lot more I didn't include. Apparently a news reporter who covered TVXQ's sasaengs said "It's a wonder how TVXQ doesn't go insane."

When you see it, etc...

Those stories about cloning their phones and jumping in front of their cars are just genuinely... I mean fucking hell, I can't even imagine.

QuoteI think there's a main difference between pop and K-pop and that is access to content- variety shows, BTS, live online shows etc. The label not the individual controls this. This is why it might seem stalkerish when actually this has been cultivated by the label.

Yeah the stream of content is just staggering, especially since that point a few years back where the V Live app took off and everyone started livestreaming too. It's too much for me, but then it's not really for me, it's for kids with nothing but free time to check on their faves. And yeah, if you're inclined to be a little obsessive then it's definitely not gonna help matters.

It's allegedly an unused 2NE1 demo, and you can really hear it. 2NE1 were basically the original blueprint that led to BP, in a lot of ways BP are 2NE1 with the rougher edges shaved off for better and/or worse. They were a very big deal at one point and were threatening to cross over, but like a lot of groups of that generation their attempt went nowhere and interest instead moved along to the newer model. Although in this case it was more the producer's interest as they still had a strong fanbase.
