Pretty disturbing about those TVXQ stalkers- I guess it's the number that's the huge difference between Western stalkers.
Though poisoning is up there.

I'm sure the Backstreet Boys or 1D had their fair share of insane shit. That said I don't think they were as permissive of the more mad stuff in quite the same way. TVXQ seems like a cautionary tale of what happens when you don't reign your fans in at all and tacitly encourage obsessive behaviour until it's far too late to fix it. I think (or at least I fucking hope) they learned their lesson on that one.

Anyway in happier news TWICE are very much BACK. Lead single is decent but the real keepers for me are the one-two of Trick It and Love Foolish where they open up a bit and get the big synths out.

Twice- Feel Special. It's pretty fucking great. Just great pop production with none of the tricks I usually go for. It seems simple then you listen then it seems verging on the over-produced but it's not. Message seem to be the main selling point given the context about Mina and female friendship.

The album is pretty good with all the production tricks I love. Trick It, Love Foolish are great and interesting. Get Loud is good. Rainbow needed more time in the oven- it's a bit of a mess. 21:29 scratches my 90s RnB itch.

I would just like to publically apologise to BGMNTS for my response to his stalker message. I have sent you a PM but wanted to write that here too. Hope you don't mind. No excuses. Sorry.

---

As for stalkery stuff my contribution is that about 8 years ago I was was visiting the Institute of Physics on some business (check me out) and went for a wander around that bit of London (is it Portland Street? Great Portland Street? Regent's Park? Around where all the embassies are).

Anyway, I saw a huge crowd outside what I think was the Langham and a massive double decker black tour bus outside. I asked some Japanese tourists who they were waiting for and, like me they had no idea. So I hung around and 10 mins later Bieber walked out with his entourage. In hindsight this was Biebers smoking-loads-of-weed-and-having-a breakdown phase and he literally ignored the few hundred mad stans waiting for him and was ushered straight into the bus. Then it got really fucking weird...

About 100 girls rushed up to the bus and literally started kissing the bus. Then two lasses actually lay under the wheels to stop it going. When security had dragged them away screaming the bus then pulled away, only to find that another crowd of teenagers had filled the lane so it actually drove into oncoming traffic and headed off towards Euston Road and UCH. It was absolutely insane.

So yes. It is the closest I will ever get to Beatlemania and now, years later with social media world I can totally get how being famous to hundreds of millions of people must be absolutely insane.

It's all good.

In the spirit of the thread I will share the one k -pop song I know:

Without trawling through the previous messages someone on here commented on the way that k-pop is k-pop but they morph through obscure dance music tropes; the 2-step garage vibe of the latest TWICE is fine but I am just a bit sad they haven't gone full on speed garage; listening to the full mini-album know and it's good... but if they so much have an AMAZING record in them if they fully embrace full on Ripgrove Double 99 vibes.

In the same way ITZY's DALLA DALLA kinda lives in the same world as DEVO's New Traditionalists ( I would say it was the square-wave bass but DEVO don't quite have as pure a sound as ITZY) we need a k-pop speed garage record.

hummingofevil

This is an attempt. It's okay. But doesn't have the bassline. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oo5pSouwSDg

I want full on Rip Groove vibe.

Urinal Cake

It's by an album by album (maybe track by track) basis but the problem is it's always going to be a pastiche because it has to remain commercial. I think unlike US pop K-Pop doesn't have a fixation on the sound of the minute or the hot producer or bluntly just producers who look like them and speak their language. Good songs are just songs.

But then people didn't really expect this Twice album to be so dance heavy and expected some sort of neo disco thing.

This is quite an interesting take on K-pop. I am quite intrigued by this youtube commentator in general.

I've watched this before so I might not remember the nuance or caveats but I think  there is a point when kpop idols become too big too fail for corporations and become so over-saturated through media appearences, vlive etc that they can't act forever and become real and authentic to their fans.  I think this whole Twice member (Mina) taking a hiatus because of anxiety is an example of that. Management couldn't say no and most fans I think sort of realised that it was okay.
I think this Twice fan video sort of explains on how fans see them as authentic even though their sounds and look change from album to album https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fJjF9ZrN5-8 . Also the members of Twice tend to write their own lyrics now for better and for worse.

Anyone got any thoughts on this:

That video posted above was really interesting so cheers.

Yes.

Yes.

There is so much subtley about that response though.I really like the video you posted but I want to dig deeper.

I'm obsessed with Taylor Swift at the moment and she is probably the biggest pop star in the world; and seems to be relatively balanced. I suspect that is just a fluke and if there are long-term manufactured stars who aren't fucking mental it's just an accident.

hummingofevil

My point is any mega pop act who is trying to satisfy the ideology of "the internet" can only fail as if one has a billion fans there will always be 1, 10, 100, 100,000 trolls willing to call them out. It's an insane world where the emptiest vessels make the loudest noise.

hummingofevil

Anyway, I'm back in work this work and someone asked me what music I like and I just happened to mention I like Taylor Swift and they spotted my rainbow pencil case. We had a lovely chat about the TS. I then have " YOU NEED TO CALM DOWN" and that bass line running through my head for last three day. Kids asking me questions about Photosynthesis and my brain wants to respond "shade never made anyone less gay" EXTREME EARWORM.

TS did get dragged for a while before she came out as broadly left-wing. I think the big one that could fall from grace is Beyonce. Jay has said and done some stupid things so as a power couple I think a few more stupid things and a backlash will begin.

I'm interested in K-Pop because of the production.  Then it's the dancing. Then yes most of them are beautiful people.
Then is the whole sort of geopolitical and cultural issues they bring up due to something so manufactured and yet sort of naive/complacent buttressing up against the real world. Then the rest.

I mean look at this dancing. Before they were supposed to be sort of catchy elements so people could copy but this just seems like fuck it https://youtu.be/MPD36TJJFmY
Maybe it's the smiley thing with their fingers but if you did that in public people would think it's some incels Joker sign that you were about to commit a murder.

Ha ha. For me it's the little hand sign on the SOS but of Fancy that does it for me but absolutely.

This is probably the best dance cover I've seen of Feel Special. But they had to split up in two groups and the second group is much better.

This reminds me of the early 2000s in the worst possible ways.  A third rate Big Bang tribute. But I guess they're appeal is that they are better looking, much better dancers, speak English and aren't running a prostitution ring.

Are these people Brazilian? The (I am assuming - soz if I am wrong) gay guys are amazing! Eu fala portugues um pouco pero.. watching the women dance makes me realise how thin the Koreans are (not an insult... I have Welsh and Nordic ancestory... 6ft tall and legs as thick as they are long - they are not long - 16st rugby body type).

bgmnts

I have Welsh and nordic ancestry and i'm short and squat. No fair.

Also yeah won't lie a brasilian guy turned me once, probably would have shagged him if he offered. They are stupidly sexy gay men.

HA ha. Snap.

Are you still learning welsh? The funniest thing I have realised this week is that the welsh for naked is "porcyn" PORK-IN. Makes all welsh naked people sound like they are naked little pigs. As a never-nude I approave.

Urinal Cake

I think a few of them are Brasilian-Asian so sexy is definitely a cultural thing. The guy does a better booty drop than the original.
Some of the dance covers are really high production affairs with sets, camera work because I guess it's advertising.

In the early days of K-pop the guys always out-danced the girls mainly because they insisted women had to wear heels.

Sadly not, not really doing owt much nowadays. Cymraeg is just too inaccessible for me, it's mad.

I like porcyn though.

PM me if you fancy it. I've become functional through two things. I watch Pobol y Cwm and take notes and I  learned 600 verbs. It took a few weeks but it's amazing how much that nails one's comprehension.

bgmnts

Ha I tried it with french, probably an easier language, and it just doesn't go in. But thats symptomatic of an overall problem, not Welsh. I may give s4c a little watch now and again though, good tip!

Some really awful news just broke last night. Former f(x) member Sulli was found dead in her apartment, apparently suicide. She'd had a particularly rough run through the absolute bearpit that is the korean tabloid media (and their attendant crowd of the worst commenters imaginable), but it really seemed like she'd turned a corner recently, releasing new music after a long hiatus and starting to face the public on her own terms. Just terrible news.

maett

That is a sickener.  25 for fucks sake. Another Korean celeb found dead by her agent/manager how lonely are these poor buggers?
