From the same scene:
"Good lord. You can imagine where it goes from here."
"He fixes the cable?"

Just idly gliding through the thread this made me nearly cry laughing. A classic, and fair enough to people who don't see it, but they are wrong.

ffs FRVR: New page.

kalowski

That's fuckin' combat. The man in the black pyjamas,

kalowski

Show me what you got. Nihilist dipshit with a nine-toed woman.

A roundtable retrospective with our three favourite bowlers. Worth a look... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KNzquU4hjpk

Rented it on video when it was first released. Watched it on my own. Then about a third of the way through I realised I really should watch it with my best mate, so I took it round to his and we watched it and revelled in its brilliance. Then I took it home and watched it with my flatmates. Then, just for good measure, watched it again the next morning before I took it back to Blockbuster.

I hate all the pish that surrounds it - Dudefest etc - but, by Christ, it deserves all the adoration it receives.

Its the same with Withnail really isn't it, well written films but heavily dependant on the performances so people dropping quotes to each other becomes tired very quickly.

One of the very few films, along with something like One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest, that gets exactly the amount of appreciation it deserves

Yeah, it's terrific.

"What do you mean "brought it bowling"? I didn't rent it shoes. I'm not buying it a fucking beer. He's not gonna take your fucking turn, Dude."

Goodman and the others quote several lines while speaking. 2 min later Harry Smith asks: Do you remember lines from the movie?

It's nice hearing them reminisce, but worst, inteviewer, ever.

HS: By 'the brothers', you mean the Coen brothers, right?

There's good stuff in there but no structure as such and the interviewer strikes me as a little "I want to give you all blowjobs"*.

*There should really be a single word for that trait.

"Today's already the 10th"
"Far out"

Claude the Racecar Driving Rockstar Super Sleuth

You ever hear of the Seattle Seven? That was me - and six other guys.

Sin Agog

I always take exception to how The Dude is introduced as the laziest man in California, and therefore the world. I am far, far lazier than he is.  Even the thought of joining a bowling league makes me want to bunker down in bed reading old comics.

Sebastian Cobb

I'm about as Lazy as he is and played darts in pub teams for a bit, but sacked it off because it became a chore.

I've got Willie and the Poor Boys on vinyl.

What I'm saying here is I could be the british lebowski.

greenman

Getting your Willy/Willies confused is most un dude like.

Shit Good Nose

Probably my favourite Coens film.

Saw it three times when it came out.  I revisit it regularly to this day.

I'm rolling rocks tonight!

Donny, the world does not stop and start at your convenience.

What the fuck is this?!?!!?
Well obviously you're not a golfer.

Chinaman is not the preferred no-men-clay-ture - Asian-American, please.

I'll suck your cock for a thousand dollars...
Aaaaaaaaaaaaaaahhhhhhhhhhhhhhh...we're all...we're all very fond of her.  Very free spirited.

Paying for milk he's already drunk with a cheque.  In his bed shorts and dressing gown.

It's just a masterpiece.

The dude abides.

Noodle Lizard

Small things that probably barely register on first viewing become hilarious after a few.  One that still gets me is Brandt's anxious face in the limo as he sits silently beside the ranting Big Lebowski, punctuated only by the occasional "This is our concern, Dude."  Philip Seymour-Hoffman really was great.

Hoffmans laugh there might be my favourite moment of the whole thing although I'v always wondered is Brandt in on the big Lebowski's scheme?

Just re-watched. It's more surreal than I recall especially around the Maud/Jackie Treehorn threads, and Dude loses it quite a bit with Walter, though he only gets physical after the ash scattering. I'm going to steal Walter's "Eh, what's seem to be the problem?" to disown myself from real-life cluster-fucks I get caught up in.

I love the way Walter always disconnects and does his faux-calm just to piss Dude off and delude himself. Great cut-to from the Larry/car-smash scene to Walter eating fast food to Santana/Oye Como Va.

Sebastian Cobb

He's a good man... and thorough.

kalowski

I've just stuck this on to watch it again. It's so good, and I'm only at the opening credits. Those first scenes are golden. "My wife? Do you see a ring on this finger? The toilet seat is up!"

kalowski

You know Dude, I myself dabbled with pacifism at one point. Not in Nam, of course

kalowski

God, the whole section where "Mr Lebowski is in seclusion in the west wing..." is brilliant.

"He thinks the carpet-pissers did this?"

kalowski

"And let's also not forget--let's not forget, Dude--that keeping wildlife, an amphibious rodent, for uh, domestic, you know, within the city--that ain't legal either."
"What're you, a fucking park ranger now?"

Lord Mandrake

Not read the thread but the best bits are all Phillip Seymour  Hoffman, he trounces everyone by just shutting some doors.

earl_sleek

Nihilists! Fuck me. I mean, say what you want about the tenets of National Socialism, Dude, at least it's an ethos.
