I've just stuck this on to watch it again. It's so good, and I'm only at the opening credits. Those first scenes are golden. "My wife? Do you see a ring on this finger? The toilet seat is up!"

Love the detail there of the underside of the top part of the seat being covered in dried piss, except where the seat itself has been.

Has John Goodman ever given a better performance? Maybe Barton Fink? Maybe?

SHUT THE FUCK UP DONNY V. I. LENIN. VLADIMIR. ILLYICH. ULYANOV.

And there's virtually no toilet paper left.

It don't matter to Jesus!!!

He calls himself Jesus and refers to himself in the third.

That’s a bit cringey.  It’s almost as if he didn’t actually write the character of The Dude!

This is my favourite film of all time and I try to visit it at least once a year. It genuinely makes me feel better about the world when things aren’t so great. I think it might be the inherent gentleness that’s there underneath all the nihilists, pornographers and crooked cops. Maybe gentleness isn’t the right word. Simplicity? There’s just something charming about a relatively simple man with his simple friends, who’s only concern when involved in a sinister plot with evil millionaires, German body mutilaters and nymphomaniacs, is his rug and bowling.

It really is about a character who’s stumbled into the wrong film. And what characters! I feel like I’ve actually gotten to know them over the years. The scene when the trio cons out of the bowling alley for the final time, you have Walter in mid (one sided) conversation with Dude going “many learnerd men have disputed this through the centuries” typical Walter on a tangent again.

I think it does a good job of showing the lack of sophistication that is there in all walks of life. Ultimately people are idiots stumbling around and being pushed in whatever direction fate pushes them in, and it's comforting and relatable when you're reminded of that.

I love it. Even though it's endlessly quoteable, it's not a series of cheap soundbites, each line really ties the film together.

"156 episodes, Dude. The bulk of the series."

Just thought of possibly the best exchange in the whole film:

"His wife goes out and owes money all over town, and they pee on my rug?"
"They pee on your fucking rug."
"They peed on my fucking rug."
"That's right Dude: They peed on your fucking rug."

What I love about it is that, moreso than any other film, every single character really feels like a full, lived-in person with their own distinct personality - even if they’re only on screen for a minute in a functional role.  The sheriff, the landlord, Smokey, Knox Harrington: the video artist, even the subsidiary nihilists.  It’s very impressively-written, cast and directed.  I think that’s why it’s so quotable - lines that aren’t much on their own become so much more resonant because of how actualized the characters are.
