Great stand up routines.

CaB has probably done this before my time, but can we discuss great routines? Stand up that goes beyond those dreadful puns in the fringe thread.

I love Richard Pryor's Mafia routine.

No surprise, I also love Bill Hicks' "Anyone here from advertising or marketing?"

I think Frank Skinner's routine on jealousy is a brilliantly crafted, funny, troubling, dark and filthy piece https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MuvQt0KaSks

Will watch this later.

Yeah, he's a shitbag, but I love this Cosby routine on recreational drugs. Just brilliant timing and facial expressions - switching from dry and disbelieving to cartoonish and exaggerated in the blink of an eye.

Emo Philips has several great ones. The one about the man with a face like a horse is near perfection as far as I'm concerned. And also the first time I ever heard the 'why the long face' gag.

Such perfectly written stuff. It's so strange that his persona and delivery don't detract from the sharpness of the material, but adds to it somehow

Talking about a well-written bit, Gary Gulman's routine about abbreviating the states:

I always loved Billy Connelly's set at the fist Comic Relief night.

Weirdly enough, I was thinking about this the other day.

This, from Andy Daly

That is splendid. I'm absolutely stealing 'somebody called, they want their thing back'.

I thought I hated Frank Skinner. That was superb.

The reverse for me. I usually like Skinner, but I saw him do that bit in 2008 (Llandudno) and it stood out as the only part of the show I didn't like. Obviously he makes a few things up and exaggerates others, but I felt it was oddly forced and inauthentic. He was in his fifties and had been with his girlfriend for a few years, which made it feel even more like it was a throwback routine that didn't fit the rest of the show.

I used to have that madness when I was a young man, so I think it's because I relate. Also prefer this mad cunt Frank to cuddly couch gentle piss take Frank

Bill Burr's adoption plans will always be a favourite of mine.

Petey Pate

George Carlin on natural disasters and the end of the world. Pure misanthropy that goes somewhere quite profound.

Funded by and shown on Channel 4. The stupid prick.

Stew's Joe Pasquale joke.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0YE9Kthyaco

The absurdity of him saying 'So I rang up Joe Pasquale and asked him how he thought of that joke' has only just hit me. I'd always just taken him at his word on that, but that never happened, did it.

"Hi Joe, it's Stewart Lee here"
"Oh hi there Stewart"
"Yeah hi, just wondering how you thought of the 'Get out of my garden' joke"

He did do interviews in the Observer for a while (during his stand up sabbatical), so it's at least plausible.

Almost certainly bullshit though, but it doesn't really matter.

A work of genius IMO. So causal, yet every single sentence is funny in itself whilst also adding layers to the larger structure of the routine.

He wrote an article for the Sunday Times about joke theft and I might be misremembering but I think he genuinely did contact Joe for comment. Seem to recall the article being included in How I Escaped My Certain Fate

Yeah I love that. Norm's short Germany bit cracks me up too:

That was from the last edition of Letterman's talk show.  Immediately following this bit, Norm begins to talk about what Letterman has meant to him and then actually breaks down.  Very uncomfortable viewing.

Yeah, I was thinking of posting this too but couldn't find an isolated clip. 'But no, it was actually close!' It's very hard to say why that's so funny, but it's absolutely side-splitting.

Would also like to nominate a Connolly routine - the stonefish/worst pain known to man.

The line "I don't know if you guys are history buffs or not..." is the one that ends me.

magval

I've not seen it in a while but the line that stuck with me was "listen, Germany, here's the deal - you don't get to be a country no more, on account of you keep sattacking THE WORLD".His choice of words is very important in why he's so good and why these routines are so memorable. Same goes for "I do that thing that makes me feel like god" in the Janice routine upthread.
