Eventually after a while NTL got rid of this channel, which was a real shame, but there was one final excellent thing on something called "The Teaching Channel" (IIRC) - an amazingly poor low-budget attempt at a soap opera, "Chalkhill Lives". It's a bit hard to sum up in plain text just how weird it was, but it seemed to be aiming for some kind of balance between deliberate humour and serious drama, but completely failed to do either. Amongst other things there was a teenage character who was on life support, and the life support monitor bit was clearly not actually plugged in; a character rather dubiously called "The Chinaman", who gave the residents of Chalkhill free money and credit cards; a non-speaking character who always wore a hockey mask, like a benign Jason Voorhees; and one cliffhanger ending to an episode where a cat-judging contest is happening, and a man very loudly accuses a main character's cat of having worms, resulting in some kind of inexplicable mass panic with people screaming and running everywhere.

There's now a channel uploading whole episodes of this on youtube, the one I clicked had zero views which is probably the same as it had at time of broadcast.

A notable mention has to go to one of the most pointlessly entertaining pseudo-scientific gameshows ever - The Krapton Factor. It gave us Gordon Burns, a nascent Coogan and over a million accountants who thought they were superman- superwoman. I know if started in the 80s but for me it hit it's stride in the 90s with updated computer graphics and the theme tune pumped up.
