QuoteThe BBC is to switch off the news and sport text services on the TV red button early next year.

The decision spells the end of reading headlines, football scores, weather, travel news and more on TV sets, 45 years after the launch of Ceefax.

Not really surprising, who'd use it these days? Still, considering it's lineage with Teletext, a bit sad.

It was always a complete pile of shit. RIP

JesusAndYourBush

Since the demise of proper teletext I've not bothered with the pathetic offering you get with digital/cable tv beyond looking once or twice and seeing it was so poor.

Didn't know it was still going to be honest.  Farewell then, red button thing.

Alberon

It was never as good as Ceefax and I'm pretty sure I haven't used it since I first got a smartphone.

Still, shame to see it go.

My dad, all the time, for one. He's going to be seriously pissed off.

I still think of red button and its associated tech as new-fangled shit that takes away from the brilliant Teletext.

For me the red button is a brash, upstart, new-fangled thing which I am yet to try.  I view it with suspicion as a hopeless vanity, a dreadful arrogance. This news means that an entire technology has dawned, peaked and crept into the crepuscular dusk without troubling me once.  I don't know whether to feel proud or profoundly ashamed.

massive bereavement

I use it if my internet goes down and occasionally look at the football table during MOTD if the post match discussion/interview is dull.

Last time I used my satellite box I could still get teletext on RTE.

Wait, so does this mean at the Euros and World Cups we can't switch to audio commentary from Five Live??

Noooooooooo

Icehaven

I glance at it most mornings while getting ready for work just out of habit but it is (not quite endearingly) shite, not least as it gets the articles directly from the website wether they work or not. There was one yesterday, ''Peaky Blinders festival; in pictures'', only obviously without the pictures. And the local news is never the same as what's on the actual local news for some reason.

What am I supposed to do with the red button on my remote now though? Can I program it to operate a nuclear explosive of some kind?

I done no reading about this but I assume it's just the text service that's going. You shall still be able to watch every single court live at Wimbledon, young man.

boki

The red button text thing I missed the most was the one on Scuzz TV.  Taken too soon, man :'(

Relax. :-)  From the article (fourth paragraph):

QuoteTVs will still be able to access other red button services, like picking a stage to watch at Glastonbury or a court to watch at Wimbledon.
