Ripper of a film, isn't it? I've been sick with a cold since Monday and I've watched it about five times since. Just letting it whirl on VLC on my second monitor all day, or on the telly downstairs if I'm on the sofa.

I think it's possibly Scorsese's better work when compared to Goodfellas, in virtue of not having the immensely clunky start with the dowdy child actor playing Henry.

Feels like it's trying to right the wrongs of good fellas in some ways, which feels a bit heavy on the 'gool guys hanging out' and a bit light on the 'dick head grifters ruin other people's lives and eventually their own'

Joe pesci crying in a ditch getting soil shovelled on him is a brilliant scene, horror film stuff, almost a record scratch sound effect as the cool monage music shuts off

Sebastian Cobb

That scene's great but so's the one where he goes tonto with a pen.

It's a great film. I dunno what it is though, as someone who gets bored by gambling and doesn't really like casinos I love a seedy casino film (I really like The Cooler and all).

Gulftastic

I know it's stating the bleeding obvious but Sharon Stone is fantastic.

How happy are people with the liberties taken with the source material? Seems to shit on Geri McGee a fair bit, to make Frank Rosenthal look a little better.

I'm still a fan of the film, just feels a bit awkward knowing that now.

Eh, I think it's a natural taint caused by the fact it was likely made with Rosenthal as a direct source, much like how Goodfellas (and Wiseguy) make Henry Hill look like anything other than an unbelievable criminal tosser. He totally fucking lied when he said he never killed anyone and hated dealing with murder, bastard was plenty happy to profit off it and get involved in it up until it became inconvenient for him.

That and ultimately Casino is further detached from the persons it's based on, what with everyone being completely renamed. I think it's better to view it as an extrapolative work of fiction (alá Shakespeare's Richard III, which is pretty much a total falsehood.) than a factual recreation, even if Rosenthal said it was accurate.
