or do any of your friends? Can we talk about them?

I do comics mesen and basically want more obscure/small run independent stuff to read and whatnot

Small Man Big Horse

A good friend of mine did, being responsible for The Walking Wounded / Massacre For Boys comics, I enjoyed them a fair bit but am aware that it's an expensive old business printing your own work, and what with attending small press comic cons he didn't exactly make much money.

I'm currently struggling with motivation to write and draw my own comic when I can just as easily continue to live off disability and produce nothing. I've got two whole pages sketched out right now, I think I'm just dreading starting the final art, 'cos I'm incredibly rusty - this comic will be an improved take on an old strip-style story of mine I last worked on in about 2003, and while I have certainly drawn things in the intervening years, I haven't done nearly as much as I should have. My tendency to take shortcuts and trace over anatomical photo references has left my skills utterly threadbare.

What's your comic about? Mine is a silly superhero/supernatural/antifa mess, I'm hoping it'll prove eclectic enough to be unique in some way. If I actually finish an issue, I'll certainly post it here. I'd love to get it printed and sell physical copies when it's done, but I don't know where to start with self-publishing - the only zine-friendly comic shop in my city shut down a few months ago.

Yes mine are presently digital only because I wouldn't know where to fucking start. I'm not linking them because promo etc, you can find them easily if you use investigation skills (i.e. the globe under my avatar)

I draw other peoples stuff for fun.
dunno if I should post samples

PlanktonSideburns

cant we have a hs art based YOUR DRAWINGS thread? talk about the work youre doing, post work in progress shots that sorta thing?

people might post whimsy in there, but the images would be bigger

Does anyone remember a comics thread from a year or so ago where a Cabber shared a YouTube video of them working at 2000 A.D.? If so, I would bloody love a link please.

Co edited and contributed to a small press Viz-esque comic for 28 issues from 1999 to 2011. A few years ago we did a collection of the best of it to little response:

I used to be dead into drawing but it's kind of fallen by the wayside of late. Some of my old stuff can be seen here: https://baroquetopus.tumblr.com/

Cheers, I recall you buying a few back in the day. Much appreciated.

I certainly do. Currently doing a weekly comic, first time where I don't know what is going to happen and I'm just posting the pages as I go.

I also have a 36 page minicomic about a robot which I've stocked at Gosh & Orbital in London. Should print some more copies.

DocDaneeka, is there any way I can convince you to help me with the whole small press thing? I don't even know where to begin. I have enormous amounts of material but no clue about printing, getting stocked, etc.

H-O-W-L

I used to make them with a game called Garry's Mod and later with Source Filmmaker.  They were all pretty much uniformly dire but I could probably make something half-decent nowadays, it's just a matter of time and effort.

I love reading comics but I'm not so sold on the format as a method of my own expression mostly because the art side of things is so fucking frustrating to me. I'd love to get an artist on board someday to do a graphic novel set in the post-apocalyptic western world I've had in the works for a few years though.

Yeah sure.

Basically you want to make a PDF.

I normally go for black & white as that's loads cheaper to print, hopefully your comic pages will roughly fit a5 ratio as well. If you have Photoshop or the like you can convert them to pure black & white, then save them as tiffs or pngs. If you want it to look all smooth, your files should be 600dpi or at least 300dpi, but I think it shouldn't matter if your ones are already pixely MS Paint ones.

Then you got to use a Desktop publishing program like Adobe Acrobat, I couldn't be bothered to download one illegally so I used https://www.scribus.net/Scribus. It's a bit fiddly but I managed to get it to work. Make sure the PDF pages are a multiple of four so you can print it as a booklet, which means the pages will be printed in the right order automatically on a4 paper. it's best to have access to a laser printer where you can do lots of testing. You can then send the pdf somewhere or print it yourself, although that might mean you have to staple them yourself.

It took me a while to get my head round it all but that's the basic process.

Working on some good stuff at the moment, one of them should end up being my first print thing. Other is that I've got three stories in the upcoming next issue of Sonic the Comic (#278), which is a triple-threat of a debut. I wrote them and artists Leeann Hamilton, Matthew Smith and Claire Ryan rendered them.

If you remember Sonic the Comic from the 90s, its current incarnation is a fan continuation that's been worked on and endorsed by many of the original writers and artists.
