I've avoided Wolf Creek because it looks really mean-spirited in the way I don't tend to enjoy, like a torture porn sort of thing. Yet everyone I know who talks about it says otherwise. I just don't want to tune it if I'm just going to feel like shit afterwards. I don't know. I think I just hate all Australian people. Whenever they crop up I'm just like oh, fucking hell, that's a shame.

I delayed viewing for the same reasons, madhair. I've no interest in depressing torture porn (even Maniac left me a little dejected), but so much of Wolf Creek is tension and hope, and the violence comes in short bursts of horror. It's not a film to walk away from feeling joyous, of course, but I don't think it'll dampen one's soul if you're generally into horror.

Wolf Creek (2005)
Horrible. Really liked it. Truly tense. Maximum rural isolation. Spends a noble amount of time establishing its characters before vilely offing them in unexpected order. Looking forward to finding the sequel.

I saw this in the cinema with a girlfriend.

Me: "Did you like that?"
Her: "Yeah...no wolves in it though"

I miss her sometimes.

Jerzy Bondov

I got punched in the face by a stranger when I was walking home from having watched Wolf Creek. The world is a cruel and violent place.

Bad Ambassador

On my way home from seeing The Wolf of Wall Street, I saw a fox get run over by a Range Rover. Went right over its spine, leaving it twitching for a bit. Horrible.

madhair60

Returning from a cinema viewing of Teen Wolf, I was sexually assaulted by a Teen Wolf.

Australian films are really fucking nasty sometimes. Saw Hounds of Love on Saturday and it feels a bit trite to call it horror; it felt like it had more in common with something like Animal Factory than some silly slasher film. It was great, so good, but felt a little uncomfortable with some of the violence towards women.

Also saw a British horror film called Book of Monsters which was one of the worst films I've ever seen.

Head Gardener

just watched Hagazussa and all I can say is, blimey

Watched Wolf Creek. Liked it. Not what I expected at all to be honest. It was grim, but Mick is too fucking funny to be upset by.

Wolf Creek 2, absolute nonsense. Gonzo madness. Rubbish but really, really, really fun rubbish. Laugh after laugh.

Is wC2 with Mick too?

Yep, and there was a recent TV series as well (which I haven't seen).

Head Gardener

Enjoyed A Dark Song last night, thanks for the recommendation

Yeah but he's turned up to 11, there's none of the dread of the original film. It's closer to Evil Dead or something, just pure splatter madness.

I mentioned the TV series earlier within the thread and it's well worth checking out, for those who haven't done so already.

I vastly preferred it to the first film, but yeah, it's pretty darn batshit (in all the best ways).  The skippy truck scene is a hoot and I love the scene which plays out like a demented, hellish version of Mastermind.

I think overall I had more fun with 2, yeah. I think I'll pull a Jim Bob here and say that while 2 was more enjoyable, 1 was probably the better bit of cinema? I thought that the torture scene in 2 veered a little too nasty in tone considering the comical excess of the rest of the film, but I don't like torture much in general. I just think it's mean. :p Wolf Creek 1 - total dread. Wolf Creek 2 - totally batshit. Good stuff.

I'm definitely gonna check out the series on the strength of those two though. Looking forward to it.

I too watched this the other night. From what I'd read, I was geared up for some mental shit happening at the end and was not disappointed. Audacious is the word.

An decent 80's british horror film I always liked is Paperhouse, any fans of this?

Is that the one where he sings "Tie Me Kangaroo Down Sport"?If so, I remember really cackling at that bit.

I watched Hellraiser 2 last night for the first time. Crikey.

Love it. Absolute carnage. Can't believe a major studio released it.

I was very fond of the labyrinth / skyline of "Hell" - veeeery dreamscape. Are there any other films that capture that tone and vibe? Graphics which feel like a Dali painting, or if you're walking through some dream / nightmare? The kind of visual artistry you would otherwise only see on the front cover of certain horror / fantasy film VHS tapes at the rental store.

Eh, I don't know if I'd ever describe New World Pictures a major studio.  It was a company founded by Roger Corman, so genre flicks were a part and parcel of their business.

Paperhouse was a childhood favourite of mine.  I really must get around to rewatching it, as I haven't seen it in over two decades.

Other than the Cenobites themselves, I always found the first film really underwhelming in comparison to its name. The second is so fantastic though, just totally bonkers from start to finish.

The third is fun - some fantastic Cenobites - but fairly slight in the grand scheme of things. I have the fourth on my computer somewhere, can anyone recommend whether it's worth continuing with them or not?

For some reason I thought it was New Line Cinema. My mistake!

Glad/relieved you enjoyed it, madhair! I'd hate to have recommended something that left you despondent. I might watch 2 this weekend.

And perhaps Hellraiser 2, too. I felt the same way about the first film. Looking forwards to these mad sequels.

Despite the studio meddling over the final cut (which led to the movie being credited to "Alan Smithee"), it's a decent sequel and the last Hellraiser movie that's actually worth bothering with.  It's certainly a damn sight better than any movie involving Pinhead going to space has any right to be.

I'd place it above Hellraiser III, at any rate.  The opening act, revealing the origin of the Lament Configuration is genuinely good and the following two acts are entertaining enough.

Jerzy Bondov

Jaws made us afraid to go into the sea. Nightmare on Elm Street made us afraid to go to sleep. Hellraiser made us afraid to successfully complete a Rubik's cube.

(might have made that joke on here before)

Fair enough if you did, as it's a good un.
