Antisemitism sets alarm bells ringing about the Holocaust, about which a great deal has been historically written and discussed, whereas Islamophobia is much more prevalent in our society yet seems to be hidden from immediate consciousness somehow.  Fewer people seem to give a shit about Islamophobia, perhaps because it is current rather than something historical?  And it's really when these things seem invisible that something terrible about them can emerge, I think.

Don't know what I'm saying really.  Just a bubble.

Islamophobia has been too politically expedient for the powers that be in recent years for them to expend any significant effort discouraging it or calling it out.

https://www.businessinsider.com/boris-johnson-blocked-report-naming-tory-donors-linked-to-kremlin-2019-11?r=US&IR=T

Quote
Boris Johnson's Conservative party has received donations from nine Russian donors, with suspected links to the Kremlin, according to an official report which has been suppressed by the prime minister.

Johnson chose to block publication of the report amid reported fears it could cost him the upcoming general election.

Leaked details from the report tie Johnson's party to London-based Russian oligarchs, some of whom have known ties to the Russian security services.

There has been a surge in donations from prominent Russians to the Conservative party over the past year.

Islamophobia is more popular than anti-semitism in Britain. If it wasn't, then Labour would have a "problem" with islamophobia instead. Why does Corbyn insist on singling out Saudi Arabia and Bahrain and Turkey, what exactly is his problem and why does he hang out with so many people who criticise them? We all know who he's talking about when he mentions "sheikhs" and "oil barons" etc.

Has anyone here even met a Jew? I've never met a-one. I've met loads of Muslims though.

My feeling is that due to its connections with the Holocaust, antisemitism is going to trigger more alarm amongst people who can see anti-Jewish tendencies as something we need to avoid.  But the point is that nothing attacking the Jews will repeat within the Western world for as long as we continue to learn about the Holocaust.

Whereas Islamophobia is under the radar and popular, much more like antisemitism was prior to and during WWII.

I'm not making a deep point here, just that somebody in a position of influence should be highlighting the true dangers of popularised racism rather than only pretending to give a shit about spectres of antisemitism.

This is an awfully strong claim, and a trivially disprovable one unless I've misunderstood it.

And arguably instrumental in policy, foreign and otherwise, in the last few decades.

Jewish people tend not to like saying that they're ethnically Jewish under such circumstances for obvious reasons. From ONS research in the last few years on adding a "Jewish" option to the census ethnicity question:

Quote
Generally, participants would not tick the box under the ethnic group question. The addition of a “Jewish” tick-box was highly unacceptable and raised concerns about discrimination among participants. The inclusion of a Jewish ethnic group tick-box was perceived as a negative attempt to “single out” the Jewish population and evoked comparisons to World War 2 Germany.

Some participants described personal experiences of anti-Semitism and discrimination, and said they were already reluctant to disclose their Jewish identity in certain social situations. This meant that most participants were uncomfortable with the idea of recording Jewish identity as an ethnicity on an official form.

https://www.ons.gov.uk/census/censustransformationprogramme/questiondevelopment/2021censustopicresearchupdatedecember2018#annex-4-summary-of-research-undertaken-for-ethnic-group-december-2017-to-november-2018

Yes, yes, I know you were joking but there is a serious point here about different types of Jewishness being less visible and very much in the eye of the beholder (note that a decent number of Germans murdered as "Jews" didn't consider themselves jewish in any manner). And, depressingly, tied up with anti-capitalism (e.g. Strasserism) (which is not me trying to say that anti-capitalism implies anti-jewish prejudice).

I don't think one is preferable than the other, but this is an interesting difference to Islamophobia (which is clearly bound up with prejudice based on skin colour and the like - Hindus and Sikhs are often direct victims too...).

This is an awfully strong claim, and a trivially disprovable one unless I've misunderstood it.

What I really meant was "on a governmental level" which is the threat that some groups are saying would come with a Labour government.  I don't mean there aren't isolated pockets of antisemitism all over the place.

I wanted to clarify that, but I'm sure I'm just being a massive idiot regardless.

I don't think a massive idiot, at all.

I did guess you were probably drawing a distinction between government-endorsed and the actions of common-or-garden scum, which isn't unimportant however horrible the latter are. I guess there's also a question around "Western" and what we (as an EU member state, for example) tolerate in places like Hungary.

A Conservative election candidate has stepped down over historic social media posts about a Labour MP and Colonel Gaddafi.

Antony Calvert, who was standing to be MP for Wakefield, also made comments about food poverty, as reported by the Sunday Times.

The 41-year-old said the Facebook posts were more than 10 years old.

Mr Calvert said his comments were "certainly not intended to cause any offence"...

According to the Sunday Times:

Quote
...Antony Calvert, a Tory candidate in the Labour-held seat of Wakefield, said “if ever there was a reason to be involved in public office” it was to expose “ludicrous” claims of food poverty in the UK.

Ahead of the 2015 general election, he also said that Labour’s Harriet Harman had to stop “banging on about wholly and utterly irrelevant feminist issues”...

This is quite interesting, depending on how well you knew her.  Did you ever get the impression that she held dodgy views, or could be easily persuaded by dodgy arguments?

I think you'd be surprised how many people work at the Daily Mail and don't believe a thing it publishes. "Just a job", innit.
