'New' band from South London. Guess the backing could be described as jangly/ spiky/ grungy indie but with very matter-of-fact spoken word female vocals over the top. It reminds me a bit of a very English Kool Thing. They've just released a compilation of their first two EPs. Some of the songs drag a bit and thanks to Florence Shaw's dispassionate delivery they can sound a bit samey but they have something. Magic Of Meghan is my favourite song...

Goodnight's great too. Ace lyrics, apparently pinched from Youtube comments and adverts.

Yeah, I liked the first release that had Goodnight on it, "Sweet Princess" but found the lyrics and vocals, as you said, a bit of a weak point. Although "have you ever spat cum onto the carpet of a Travelodge" is a great line.

I just went back over my initial post to check I hadn't stated that I thought they were great as this compilation is really starting to drag. Would have been much better as the original 2 EPs but as a 12 track album it's a bit boring. Odd that the earlier EP/ side sounds far more dynamic than the newer one.

Norton Canes

Really like Sit Down Meal, it's been on 6Music a lot this week. Was trying for ages to work out exactly who the vocals reminded me of. There's a bit of Sarah Nixey there obviously but Valerie Trebeljahr from Lali Puna is the one.

Thanks for the tip. Never heard of them That first promo is quite superb too. That track intro does sound like Lip Up Fatty intro though.

I think they are great - I posted a review of their Manchester gig in August in the Gig Whores thread here. I really like Flo's deadpan vocals over the spiky backing. It started out from her not being a singer and basically having her arm twisted into being the band's vocalist. I noticed that on the latest batch of songs there's a bit more actual singing cropping up on some of the songs, like on Viking Hair and Sit Down Meal, so she must be getting more confident in the role now.

I was lucky enough to get a copy of the Sweet Princess cassette at the gig (off Flo, who was manning the merch stall and even had time for a chat) , but missed out on the compilation LP with Boundary Road Snacks & Drinks. Sit Down Meal and Spoils (which rhey were playing live in August) are the standouts from the latest EP for me, but I think they are still both slightly below the level of Magic Of Meghan.

Yes, and it sold out before I got the chance to buy a copy. I'll have to try and pick up a copy off Discogs

Cheers, didn't know they had got wider distribution (I only checked their Bandcamp page). The Sweet Princess cassette was much more limited - I was lucky they had kept some back for sale at their gigs. I got one of the last of the embroidered t-shirts too (luckily I only needed a Small).

Very excited for "John Wick"!

Magic of Meghan is one of my favourite new songs from the last couple of years, and I must have played the two EPs more than anything else last year. The new singles have got me looking forward to the album, but, if I'm being honest, I doubt either of them would have got me excited if I wasn't already a fan.

holyzombiejesus

I liked the compilation that came out last year (or maybe the year before) but I've never played the actual record and just sold it for one hundred pounds! One hundred fucking quid! Bet it's reissued before the year is out.

bloom

New single is great - looking forward to this! Hardly surprising but already a fair number of silly money listings for the 'limited editions' on eBay.

Are these just there to snare gullible people? They're still widely available with the 7" and signed insert.

Really? That is a bargain. Has it actually arrived? Banquet have got a habit of listing things as in stock that never actually turn up.

Wow. It goes for 5x that price on Discogs.

good times

Had never heard of them before but caught "Strong Feelings" over the weekend on Tom Ravenscroft and instantly loved it.

Since hearing them played to death by 6 over the last few days I'm wondering if I actually like them much at all or just find them a bit basic, possibly even a little annoying. The off kilter vocal inflections which at first which seemed fresh are somewhat getting on my fucking nerves, certainly.

I'm going to listen to the full album today and decide. I feel like it may be a case of a band being less than the sum of it's parts - they tick every box in terms of music I like, angular, stripped down, interesting singer, weird lyrics, but feels like there's potentially something missing.

Alternatively, perhaps it's an example of a band finding a magical, simple sound and doing it beautifully - but once you've heard one song you've heard pretty much every song they'll ever write. A bit like Sleaford Mods.

As a side note, it's a rare occasion where I don't get tired of very quickly songs that I love on first listen. By contrast, my all time faves often usually go over my head on the first few listens.
