Good on him for still writing at 88, but crikey that list of brand names and movie titles felt very odd. I hope it was contorted a bit to fill out the space for the acrostic. Only just started reading the Smiley books - currently on A Murder of Quality - and he had a lovely prose style. Seeing chatter about Krispy Kremes and Jurassic Park velociraptors seems highly odd.
