Did you not see the wink, trigger?

No, I barely use social media, but I can see how it has poisoned debate from your responses.

Can you barely use CaB please?  Seems a bit odd to post here when you hate it so much. No need to have tantrums when people won't agree with your tedious bigotry. Twitter's the perfect place for that, give it a whirl.

Wah wah the world is moving on without me and I don't like it

Pinball for someone so allegedly content and happy you certainly are quite the embittered bitchy little lost soul in almost all of your recent posts here. Maybe try engaging in some of the fun threads that aren't related to the things you're so wound up about (in which there are pages and pages of informed discussion and not the braying hate mobs you claim have permeated the place) if you want to see why CaB is just as vibrant, creative and often hilariously funny as it used to be, maybe even more so since quite a lot of the horrid cliquey negativity has been flushed out.

Or you could just keep convincing yourself that political correctness has gone mad and we're never going to learn despite all your passive aggressive bullshit posturing. Wink indeed. This isn't 2010 any more mate.

I used to post a lot on CaB back in the day, and am dipping my toe in the water again. It seems that CaB is host to some rather unpleasant people nowadays, who prefer to hurl abuse rather than engage in debate. What a shame. And your grammar is appalling.

I am at peace wih myself and content, and actually quite happy. You need to disconnect from the social media hate amplifier, old chap.

Of course, you will respond with 'fuck you', because you are an ill-educated, uncouth pig. Prove me wrong, 'pal'.

Why have a criminal justice system then?

And it's rather obvious that metoo has got out of control, 'cancelling' men based on an unsubstantiated allegation.

What does said cancellation actually mean for people tho? Most of the men who get meetooed for being ACTUAL rapists/abusive behaviour don't seem to be suffering many concequences for their actions

In the spirit of trying for conversation rather than argument, what are some examples of meetoo going too far and ruining the lives of an innocent man?

Genuine question

dallasman

Hey Pinball, now that everyone has called you a stupid, worthless cunt, why don't you stick around for a bit and answer some genuine questions? Everyone's feeling really energised about this thread again for some reasons, and the spirit of trying for conversation has descended once more. Let's start with you, Pinball, explaining in more detail why it's wrong to #cancel someone based on rumours, and illustrating this with several examples of people who were really badly hurt in the process. Not just "everyone thinks I'm a rapist and my kids had to change schools", but something really juicy, like a suicide. If you're really nice, and careful to apologise to everyone for losing your temper, they might pretend to be engaging with your arguments for a while, instead of going directly back to calling you a stupid worthless cunt.

I came wandering here for a chat, don't start

PlanktonSideburns

I don't know how I feel one way or the other about the issues here

I don't think pinball is a cunt - I don't think I know him at all really

Just would like to hear both sides of the argument, from either pinball or you dallas

I too would like to see this list of celebrities whose lives were ruined by false accusations of sexual abuse. And how that's worse than actually being sexually abused.

1. Jeff Goldblum

that's it I think

rue the polywhirl

No doubt false allegations can ruin lives and cause undue suffering and stress. The act of abuse will cause untold hurt but also being falsely accused of committing abuse can cause as much untold hurt, pain and scarring as well. Seems wrongful and haughty to say that one is better or worse than the other.

Sin Agog

Just finished up a book written by a woman who was sexually abused so brutally by her stepfather between the ages of 2 and 16 that she split her mind up into about 100 personalities to compartmentalise the grief.  I might be wrong, but I don't think Chris Hardwick's personal trials had a similar result.  Abuse is worse.  Sorry if that sounds haughty.

PlanktonSideburns

Yea surely comparing two things which are different is not haughty behaviour?

Aside; I quite light haughtiness as a character trait

dallasman

"False accusations of abuse are the same as abuse". "Louis and Aziz got everything right". If those are the angles you're interested in exploring, I suggest seeking out internet forums where such views are actually being defended. But if the main purpose is to prolong this particular thread by rehashing old arguments, it seems we're all in for a bit of luck this morning:

https://news.avclub.com/jeff-goldblum-defends-woody-allen-says-theres-a-presu-1839704307?_ga=2.146121012.182094373.1573141617-1169159451.1519565901

QuoteGoldblum briefly noted that he would be willing to considering working with Allen again if the opportunity came up. "I think there is a presmuption of innocence until proven guilty," he explained, later adding that he does think the "cultural shift" of the #MeToo movement (which he supports "wholeheartedly") has been "very, very positive and long overdue." That being said, he still admires Allen's work enough that he wouldn't outright refuse to work with him until he learns "something more."

Calling Biggy! Calling (Ex poster)! Calling all edgelords in exile! It is on. OH, IT IS SO MOTHERFUCKING ON!!!!

Hehe, not really, but that headline was amusingly timed, I thought.

dallasman

Huh. The second name was autochanged. I wasn't aware, but I think I know the reason, so...all good. Neat feature.

PlanktonSideburns

That article is getting quite excited over what goldblum is saying there isn't it? He's basically saying that if the man's a rapist he won't work with him, if he isn't he might. How is he 'going out of their way to stick up for Allen against the "unfair" backlash.', rather than admitting he doesn't really know anything and being vaguely diplomatic?

Yeah, I'd say so. This kind of thing just isn't news, IMHO. Not even entertainment news. I noticed a couple of references to Goldblum's own impending cancellation in the comments, but little in the way of specifics. "Handsy" with young female fans, apparently.

phantom_power

I think there are a lot of Twitter storms where there is a rumour about some man or other doing bad things and he gets #cancelled but they tend to be forgotten about quite quickly. It is usually only where there are several accusations with some sort of corroboration or commonality that suggests that they are probably right that causes any long term damage

alan nagsworth

Yes. There was a bit of speculation about Maynard James Keenan because two different stories surfaced which both had strong similarities in the nature of what happened and how. But then Tool released their first album in a decade and a half and it was the worst thing they or any other band has ever recorded so I think that event took a lot of the heat off him probably

When Rabbit Howls? Read that earlier this year after watching Doom Patrol (the book inspired a character in that series). It's a grim one and no mistake.

Trudy dat!  Yeah, I was re-reading some scans of DP with the letter columns intact, and picked it up after Morrison recommended it there.  It is incredibly heartbreaking the level of abuse that guy put her through, the stuff of the darkest nightmares (I'll never look at a well the same way again), but it has also completely changed the way I think of my own mental functions.  Maybe I, too, have a buffer, a cynical but confident femme fatale, a zombie and an ancient Gaelic* poet locked away inside me?  They're just a tad more integrated.  To gracefully segue on topic, it even influenced how I see debates like this (see earlier post about us being more than some half-baked opinions dumped on the internet...that's one shard in a much more arresting diamond).

If women's lives were 'cancelled' by social media vigilantism that has no regard for due legal process, it would soon be stopped. But when it's the Sisterhood doing the attacking, and men being attacked, then the men can be destroyed and no-one gives a shit.

This is from today by the way

Urinal Cake

Has anybody calculated the cost of being #cancelled economically? It must be a reduction of 30% of future earnings. Weinstein didn't strike gold everytime. I mean it's not like these guys have to work at an warehouse now to make ends meet unlike Brock Turner earning $12 a hour. And Turner was on the conveyor belt of college to probably a swim coach or working as some overpaid drone in a consultancy firm.

In lighter #cancelled news, someone came for Nina Kraviz for doing her hair in corn rows.
https://mixmag.net/read/nina-kraviz-responds-criticism-cornrows-news

It's that classic thing of people deciding what's cultural appropriation in America then applying it, cookie cutter elsewhere for drama. The same thing happened to Lorde and she basically told them to fuck off.

They're both dj's who make a living playing music that has wholesale lifted off of generations of black music fighting over what people are allowed to do with their hair. It's absurd.
