Gentle But Joyous

So as the winter nights draw in I feel the need to listen to something gentle (I am appallingly old, after all) but also upbeat and joyous rather than miserable, as the latter is something my record collection is filled with. Any and all suggestions will be enormously appreciated, apart from those I hate.

Deyv

Dan Reeder, maybe? He's certainly gentle, not sure about upbeat/joyous but there is a fair bit of humour in his lyrics.

They're fun, yeah, I like those so thank you.

Do you know what would hit those requirements really well? Some of those cozy electronicy indie bands from the mid 2000s...how about this one by mùm? Some great songs on there, can imagine them packing into a cozy little lighthouse on a winter's night, getting the heaters on and having a jam. You're armchaired and blanketed in the corner watching it all

What about the album the Party by Andy Schauf? Ok, maybe a touch of melancholy throughout the whole affair but also a sleepy joyousness, all punctuated by that thick bass, Andy's beautiful voice and fantastic songwriting. Ah and I nearly forgot the plentiful clarinet sections that'll keep you warm like an oil heater. concept album about going to a party or something.

Been really getting to Brazilian hippyish folk recently; a lot of heart, fantastic musicianship and some complex jazzy arrangements. Why not try Edu Lobo https://youtu.be/_wVHfwBxFSE or one of my favourites ever, the woman known simply as Joyce https://youtu.be/J2x0JtEFKXg it all has a very autumnal and relaxing quality to it to me, while remaining incredibly uplifting. This album, mann https://youtu.be/U6fne0LL620 it's so beautiful, right from the very first second

I was aware of múm as I recently searched for bands that sound a bit like Sigur Ros but hadn't found a full album, so thanks for that.

And thank you for that too, that's lovely and just the kind of thing I'm looking for.

However that is fucking horrible and you're a dirty cunt for suggesting it.*

*That or it's not quite my cup of tea, but I appreciate your suggesting it anyhow.

I just painted the picture mate, you're the one who added the detail of him quietly wanking beneath the blanket

Can't win em all...although how you can open that second link Aldeia de Ogum by Joyce and think that's a horrible piece of music is completely beyond me

I love all the MPB* you suggested, man!  That Joyce et Angelo album in particular is a massive favourite.

Was gonna suggest some folk poppy stuff like Tenniscoats (https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=DNkbFGknhk4) as that's usually the kinda sound I go to when I'm in need of a soul recharge, but if you can't get down with Joyce then you'll probably not like them.  Or maybe you will?

I didn't really think it was horrible, just not something that I loved like the other two you recommended. It may well grow on me over time though and I'll definitely give it another chance.

I did. Which I can't explain at all, but thank you for the link.

Suck on it, Misspent Boners (and Joyce)! ;)

It is a wondrous thing listening to someone softly coo in your ear while the country is flooding around you.

Hah yeh no worries it's all subjective :)

It's funny, it's all Brazilliany with Latin rhythms, but always evokes autumnal and wintry feelings for me for some reason? I think the first time I heard the Joyce stuff was walking along on a late September after noon so maybe that has something to do with it. I dont know, it's the guitar noodles that flow like frosty rivers and the flutes that float playfully like falling leaves. It's the same with electro pop type stuff among other styles; no obvious affiliations to the colder parts of the year but for some reason that's what I associate it with

Sin Agog

Wasn't it quite a sad time to be a musician, or indeed a Brazilian, in Brazil?  The military junta had taken over, refashioned the laws to suit a more authoritarian rule, and forced several luminaries like Caetano Veloso and Chico Buarque to bugger off to Europe.  I sense a lot of melancholic tones in the music of the period, but it only enriched it if anything.

Some mid period Popul Vuh?

Rather strange how they worked with Hezog so much when Florian Fricke seems so totally different in outlook after his early electronic years.

Monstrous Psychedelic Bubble?

Hmm, how about a couple of beautiful pieces from Underworld's Karl Hyde?
Your Perfume Was the Best Thing
Slummin' it for the Weekend
Angel Café

Mark Hollis's solo record contains this gorgeous song (yes, the silent opening is intentional):

Or maybe some Roddy Woomble:
Making Myths
On N'a Plus De Temps

I knew it would that song when I saw you'd put a link. It is absolutely wonderful.

Thanks for the further suggestions, I'll check them out tomorrow when I've a bit more time. Apart from...

Up With People by Lambchop

As I already know and love Lambchop a great deal, and would agree with you that they deserve to be named here. Though not the album he did under his own name with Courtney Tidwel, I love it but jesus it's a depressing beast in places.

Around this time of year, I find myself listening to Baroque 'n' Roll from the late sixties to the early 70s.

Bob Stanley's Tea & Sympathy is a great compilation of pansy-assed records that fits the bill for me.

Here's one of my favourites from it:  Captain Jones by Eddie Addenbury.

Have you heard William Tyler's solo stuff?

Crabwalk

Here are some faves of mine that hopefully fit the adjectives for you:

Al Green - All 'n' All

Marcos Valle - Garra

Bibio - Town & Country

Destroyer - Kaputt

Mulatu Astatke - Tezeta

Erasmo Carlos - Gloriosa

Ned Doheny - Each Time You Pray (don't be put off by the first 20 seconds)

Hopeton Lewis - Take It Easy

Giorgio Tuma - New Fabled Stories

I do admit, I sometimes struggle to distinguish melancholy from joy.
