I'm gonna go to work tomorrow dressed as a giant sunflower (naked and orange with felt offcuts jammed around my face) to commemorate Derek, who died in the 2nd Punic War. Bloke from the kebab shop is laying a lettuce wreath.

You can get a purple poppy for the animals killed.I'd buy one of them.
They've made a big industry of remembrance here in OZ.We get ANZAC day too.
Youngsters wearing their grand parent's medals. What a joke. They'd wet themselves if they had to go outside without an Ipad.

Never actually seen a purple poppy, although I've heard of them.
I bought a white poppy this year, from the CND shop in Exeter, in order to join in but show my opposition to the gross fetishisation of the armed forces and war. I hear some loathesome Tory disagrees with me, so I must be doing something right.

Making people buy a poppy just so they can get a drink hardly.seems in the spirit of the Poppy Appeal. What happens if the pub runs out of poppies?

I assume a pub can refuse service to someone unless they've made a visible donation to charity? I'm a supporter of the Poppy Appeal but it feels like this pub has co opted it in a rather unpleasant and authoritarian way. It's clearly going to get him more business though.

Obviously goes without saying it's hugely important to hear and preserve people's experiences of the war of course, but pompously appropriating traumatic narratives that have fucked up and stolen lives as a literal badge of Britishness and moral upstanding is just cunt's work.

This.  Remembering, actually thinking about, the unimaginable suffering, loss and pain, visited on millions of ordinary people.  Meditating on that and on why it must stop, war must stop, for the sake of all those disemboweled before and all those to come.

I do think about this.  One of the things I've been doing is looking at WW1 postcards, researching and  piecing together fragments of ordinary peoples' lives, their love and care for one another, finding out what happened to them.  It was inspired by one of my ancestors who won a military cross at Gallipoli and went on to die in the mud at Ypres before he'd ever had any fun at all.  What that did to those around him.  Magnified by millions.  We can't be letting shit like that go on any more, we should remember and work for that, if it's the last and only thing we ever do.

QuoteSean Donnelly, who owns the Three Lions pub in Bristol, said anyone who ordered a drink but was not sporting the traditional flower on Remembrance Sunday would be asked to buy one from the bar or be turned away.

...

Yes, that's how pubs work.

"Pint of fosters please"
"Sorry mate, you'll have to buy one"
"Yes"

Oh they mean they'll be asked to buy a poppy.

You've raised a good point. They should alter the poppy design frequently like Comic Relief alter the Red Nose every time, keep these cunts on their toes!

What about those non-patriots who've got knitted poppies? They might as well have DEATH TO THE WEST tattoo'd on their top lips!

Would that pub accept the LGBTQ poppy that has got lots of publicity in Manitoba Canada. Because of students getting suspended for not wearing them. Which is actually not true and a fabrication that was heavily promoted by a local Conservative politician (surprisingly).

I'm saddened to see that Porn Pedallers #cockdestroyer Tweet was taken down. Maximum respect from Rebecca More.

I'll give you one last chance. Did you insinuate the right honourable MP for Plymouth was a meatophile in cookd and bombd general bullshit forum?

He's such a prostitute and I've never implied his wife's a tit.  If "they" fought an died so's we could choose, what business or right is it of Mercer's (or anyone else) to lay down the law about poppy colours?  #they'reallredafteri'vefinishedwiththem
