'High Tide and Low Tide' by The Wailers - truly gorgeous but somehow didn't make it on to 'Catch A Fire':

2 classics left off 2 classic albums...

Total Eclipse was left off Iron Maiden's Number of the Beast until the reissue:

I read that Stevie Nicks was fucking furious about that being left off and nursed a grudge about it well into the 80s.

Scream Thy Last Scream as well, I mean Saucerful did have some good non Barrett stuff on it but tracks like Seesaw and Corporal Clegg weren't exactly world beaters.

Mentioned in the Zep thread but the "10 ribs and all" instrumental on Presence, could have replaced the rather average Candy Store Rock and Royal Orleans and would IMHO have suited the album's stately tone better to. - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=61CNBf8tY4g

Dennis Wilson leaving Holy Man off of Pacific Ocean Blue, even without vocals its incredible - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vPyk0AyFors

Mexico from the same sessions as well - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QTfc6q_jrh8

The Mars Volta song 'Frances the Mute' was left off the the album 'Frances the Mute' due to time constraints.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5eU7ugTl-VM

Bonus fun fact: The finalized track listing had five tracks and was intended to be released as such on all formats. Because of disputes with Universal Records, the 32-minute track 'Cassandra Gemini' was arbitrarily split into eight tracks on the CD version, taking up tracks 5 through 12, since the band would otherwise only be paid an EP's wages for a 5 track album.

Studio execs nixed 'Going to Paris' by The Waterboys from going on A Pagan Place, despite Mike Scott wanting it on the album*.

WHY????

It is absolutely fucking glorious.

(*Source: I asked Mike Scott on twitter why it only emerged in the mid-90s on The Secret Life of the Waterboys rarities collection and he was kind enough to answer.)

There's one of these for pretty much every single Bob Dylan album, but for me the most egregious ones are 'Abandoned Love' off of Desire, 'Angelina' from Shot of Love and 'Foot of Pride' from Infidels.

My current hot-take is Suede should've fucked "The Power" off of Dog Man Star and put "This World Needs A Father" there instead.

Ahhh I bet you thought I was going to say "Killing Of A Flashboy", didn't you. But to be honest, great though that is, it doesn't really fit tonally with the rest of the album. But it probably should've been a non-album single at least.

I adored Suede and was massively excited when Dog Man Star was released, and although I mostly loved it even I had to admit that The Power was not just their worst song but one of the worst I'd ever heard by a band I liked, and totally agree given the quality of so many of their B Sides (and Stay Together) it's unfathomable how something so lame ended up on an album.

Young & Lovely from Modern Life is Rubbish.

Also, Theme From An Imaginary Film from Parklife. Perhaps they thought there was only room for two big production numbers on the album, but they were wrong to think that (if they did think that).

All those ones by The Smiths. "William it was really nothing" for one. Agree on Suede, so many good B-sides from the first two albums.

The Smiths had to issue quite a few compilations of non-album tracks that are better than many of the tracks that made the albums. 'Hatful of Hollow' is better than any of their studio albums.

'Wonderful Ass' and 'We Can Fuck' (what's that one about, Prince?) were left off Purple Rain and are both prime purple pop picks. Imagine if Tipper Gore had walked in on her daughter playing the latter instead of 'Darling Nikki'. There's more than masturbating with a magazine going on in that one.

'Extralovable' was left off 1999 and it's...probably for the best, to be honest.

'Extralovable' has the controversial rape lyrics, yes, but the song is absolutely slamming.

Oh, undoubtedly, I'd go as far as to say one of his best. Up until the end when he completely besmirches it with his deeply unsavoury rape patter, anyway. Not included on the upcoming exhaustive 1999 reissue, I notice. Was hoping for a version with a fadeout.

There's also the full version of 'Computer Blue' which was left off Purple Rain, 'Old Friends 4 Sale' was not included on Parade and 'Days of Wild' was cut from The Gold Experience. Prince's reissues are going to keep us entertained for at least another decade, I'd say.

The Smiths had to issue quite a few compilations of non-album tracks that are better than many of the tracks that made the albums. 'Hatful of Hollow' is better than any of their studio albums.

Indeed, Hatful of Hollow was the gateway album that I first acquired aged 12, and the only flaw I ever found with it was the piano missing from Reel Around The Fountain. To be fair to The Smiths, they didn't put any piano on the original Troy Tate recording either.

When I first learned Meat is Murder was not originally planned to be on the Meat is Murder album, it was mind-blowingly confusing. We didn't have t'internet back then, hence such information was harder to verify unless it was published in Sounds, Record Mirror, Melody Maker or the NME.

Jason Pierce left Feel So Sad off of debut Spiritualized album Lazer Guided Melodies. Fortunately the later compilation Complete Works Volume 1 included all 3 versions.

He then left Rocket Shaped Song off Ladies and Gentlemen We Are Floating in Space, until the expanded re-release came out.

Going Down Slow curiously failed to appear on Let It Come Down despite being recorded contemporaneously, though at least it was released on Complete Works Volume 2 and was brilliantly rendered at every Acoustic Mainlines gig I attended.

In addition, I'd have left his own cover of Lord Can You Hear Me? off Let It Come Down. The original Spacemen 3 Playing With Fire version was perfectly sufficient.

Also the closing track on Amazing Grace, Lord Let It Rain On Me, always sounds more like a leftover track from the album released two years earlier. To be fair I'm not sure it was even written in 2001 however.

I don't think the Smiths stuff counts as they weren't recorded during an album session and then left off

Which version do you mean? The 83 extraloveable sounds ace! Well up for an official release of that in proper quality
