"A detective and a trooper travel to a lush estate to interview the quirky relatives of a patriarch who died during his 85th birthday celebration."

Well, this was outstanding wasn't it? Star studded whodunit Cluedo tale that was full of twists and great performances. Film of the year for me

Small Man Big Horse

I am tempted to go and see this tomorrow but feel that Rian Johnson's work often tends to be massively overrated (I really didn't understand all the fuss about Brick, for instance, and Looper is the only one of his that I actually like) so I'm not sure if it's for me.

phantom_power

I have liked all of Johnson's films to one degree or other but this is easily the best. Funny, gripping, bit of social commentary and great performances.

popcorn

Enjoyed it. Silly and fun and clever. Good family film for the hols n that.

Piggyoioi

i'll pirate it, but yes, i agree, even before the TLJ schlock i thought he was fairly overrated. best thing he's done are the BB episodes and obviously they're scripted be other people.

ok director / bad screenwriter?

It's a clue to understanding the film!

wrong thread innit :(

I didn't have the "I think I'm meant to find this a lot cleverer than I do" sensation I had with Johnson's previous films, although it's certainly not subtle, but I do think it's been a bit overpraised. There's a bit of bait and switch going on, which is all well and good but I enjoyed the bait more than the switch.

Still, it's a fairly fun couple of hours at the movies that doesn't feel like anything else out at the moment.

phantom_power

I think that is why it is getting so much praise. It isn't like anything else out there at the moment. It isn't super hero, franchise, adaptation or remake. It doesn't try to be too arch or ironic. It is just a well-made film in a genre that hasn't been very well served for a while

He was always very pally with critics on the whole going way back, and I think it was very much just a genuine respect for the work the do and whatnot. The problem is that a lot of them tended to return the favour, they're not gonna shit on Looper when he's gone out of his way to give them feedback for various things over the last few years when he wasn't promoting anything.

Knives Out looks like a kind of nice throwback thing that loads of people will find pleasant and I'll fucking hate almost entirely because of the baggage I bring in to the viewing (the critical ravings, an awareness of the kind of person who'll call it film of the year, etc).

Cuellar

Saw this on the weekend. Enjoyed it, thought it was good fun.

Once I'd got over Daniel Craig sounding like Homestar Runner of course. Towards the beginning he says 'observer' in the maddest way and my partner and I burst out laughing .

Bazooka

I thought it was boring as dishwater.

**SPONGLERS BELOW**

Did anyone else think that when the lass vommed into the cup it would become a plot point? I thought it was going to turn into a tense, funny sequence where Blanc kept almost having a sip but then getting distracted. He could then have sipped it while Marta was with the drugged woman and that would be how he realised she had lied to him - instead of having to hear it from Ransom. This all seems so obvious I'm actually confused as why they didn't do it. Did Johnson think it was too obvious?

Cuellar

**SPOLER ALSO**

I thought her compulsively vomming when lying would be a bluff, and that in fact the whole thing was an elaborate double bluff and she HADN'T mixed the vials up at all, only telling Plummer that she had and freaking out, causing him to kill himself when in fact he'd been given the normal medicine. OR that this was her plan, but because Ransom DID mix the bottles, she HAD accidentally given him loads of morphine.

Yes. I also thought this was going to happen.

madhair60

I keep seeing this movie about and saying "Knives ooooot" like Sid the Sexist at the start of the terrible cartoon.

Custard

Saw this, thought it was excellent. Really made me laff at points, and that has to be one of the best casts assembled in recent times. Count me as another who was laughing at Daniel Craig's accent, though he was clearly taking the piss

Missed opportunity not using the Radiohead song, mind

He subverted your expectations.

Yeh it's funny. Got quite a few pleasingly silly moments that made me laugh.

It's a very likeable film I think.

Chairman Yang

An earnest attempt at a mystery film with some guileless social commentary on top. Never manages to reach a farce, unfortunately.

It suffers in the way that every Rian Johnson film I've seen does where the world of the film doesn't really exist outside what's right on screen at the moment; all his scripts are very sketchy.

Fun enough, though. Craig's accent is the best bit by miles.

That's a good point. I think that was the only thing that was sort of missing for me - I wanted it to kind of tip over into that zone of ridiculousness, like a good Frasier episode, that never quite arrived.

Chairman Yang

There was a kind of kitschy 'having your cake and eating it' by making the characters over the top whodunnit archetypes but also sinister class/race enemies.

I reckon they could have just leaned into it and made everyone an even more ghoulish arsehole. I want a version of this film where Craig seems comparatively reserved
