Update on non-homelessness
« on: December 01, 2019, 08:52:38 AM »
Some people noticed a few erratic posts from me over the past few months about the prospects of being homeless, and eventually it happened. I was served a date to leave and dutifully did, spent a few days on a nearby hill (in the Cardiff area) before staying with a friend who has sadly been re-admitted to hospital voluntarily for his mental health issues (lithium, depakote, sertralaine and one other - he stopped taking everything but the lithium but added whiskey and I suspect added crack - not good). Living with him was trying as I wasn't really aware of his mental health problems or the prevalence of crack and heroin in Cardiff so my eyes were opened to a dark subculture I was unaware of.

Anyway, during that time I went to the local housing office who were nice but basically told me I wasn't at risk, so offered me floor space at a night shelter, faced with that prospect i preferred the tent idea. Thankfully someone put me in contact with a local charity and i was swiftly re-housed in a wet-house in a nice area of Cardiff, don't want to mention the charity by name but they specialise in problematic drink or drug use in people over a certain age.

It has not all been plain sailing, because at first I saw it as a challenge to keep up with some of the 'old-timers' and quickly regretted it. Had a huge binge on vodka, bought some weed of dubious providence and spiraled into a chaotic break from reality where I called the 101 police line while sitting in a puddle not far from from the house. Needless to say the staff were not pleased, but I have been no trouble since and after a few days of abject sickness, shakes and paranoia am semi-okay now.

I've only been here 8 days and the internet is verboten on private computers so have downloaded tools to try and get on the 53 visible wireless networks, but on the plus side have sorted out benefits and have got me booked to see a psychotherapist in a few weeks - which was previously out of my financial reach. So it's looking largely positive.

TLDR - Not living the out doors life as dex queried in a thread a while ago, local authority housing is oversubscribed and under funded, as is mental health and/or drug/alchohol rehabilitation, but there are charities out there to advocate for you, but they are few and also massively under pressure, but are there so if anyone else finds themselves in a similar position to me nag, or get someone else to nag on your behalf and people will help.

Absolute scandal that those in your situation can only be properly helped by charity. There but for the grace of God...

Cheers guys, um but there are people in far worse positions than me, even in this house - who have just been ignored by society and are basically considered derelicts or non-people and if you can understand them (the valley slurring ones and the Glaswegian guy) they have a lot to offer in terms of knowledge and experience. Two are ex-army (and while we disagree on a lot of things) are well read and well traveled. Challenge tv seems most popular in the lounge, not tit movies or anything.

I've tried to organise four of us as a team for the local pub quiz - ironically there are 7 pubs within  a 5 minute walk.

Yeah, I don’t doubt there are others worse off. But even your situation would be unpleasant for most people to go through. Everyone should be helped by the government. Roll on Labour win.

Thanks again, don't want to turn this into a self-pity blog, but due to my anxiety issues and being less than assertive I was genuinely scared on my first few days. The experienced residents have been fine, but there was a guy who moved in on the same day as me who was very 'in your face' not aggressive 'per se' but scared me. Turns out he had lost his ptsd meds and was suffering badly with the effects of withdrawal - after a nasty fall Thursday he was taken to docs, given meds and is a lot calmer now, he still rinsed me for fags and booze, but I've now set ground rules that my room is off limits.

I think he finally gets it, but I don't want the guys with giant butterfly nets come to look for me!

EDIT: Thanks madhair, have a wank on me. x

PM me if you want help, maybe someone more techical could set up some sort of fund. Dunno if that's appropriate. A few quid can't buy you happiness but it can get you a down payment on it.

Interested in hearing more about your drug mate and that dark side you mentioned but don't want to be ghoulish.

Thanks for the update and any more is most welcome.

thanks again, but money is fine for time being. Please stop calling me remedial - I am Gash! I used to sign every infrequent post with Gash x -  till told not to.

The pigface (drawn by a friend) and remedial_gash* are pretty much all me for better or worse - even my facebook - which I rarely use, so in trying to be anonymous somehow created a (very tiny) 'brand' all remedial_gash is me sadly. Ups and downs all included.

*remedial gash was a kind of triple pun. Stupid cunt, self harm - a remedial gash, or a remedial talking gash.... Sorry.

Pleased you're alive.

Are you working towards getting out of the wet house? Probably something to think about, like.

Does a wet house lactate?

there are enough tits here so probably

As for other questions, getting out is a priority, but I am not even allowed guests for two weeks, and although they are lovely this place is about full compliance to some understandable rules and to some I cannot. Basically I am just opening myself up for help and will comply with all the other rules, dunno why I can't have a wi-fi password as it is a house of drunks not paedos and it isn't prison as far as I can tell.

It is a great relief to hear you're not kipping under an upturned boat.

Interesting that the green pig was drawn by a friend of yours, i was convinced I recognised it from somewhere and have been on the verge of asking where I knew it from a couple or more times. Its a cracker.

Ah, I'm so glad to hear you've a roof and a bed Gash.  Thank you for telling this.  Made me laugh at myself.

I was just about to start a thread called HOW DO WE FUCKING STAND IT 1!!!111!!!!?  All about how I just got home from a row of bone-weary shifts, knowing I would need to light my fire (only heating) and that my chimney's blocked.  Decided to bite the fucking bullet, exhausted though I may well be, rammed the old chimney sweep brush up there.  It got stuck.  Had to dismantle the flue.  Covered myself and the room in wet soot.  I stink like an ashtray and am stained blackish yellow (mostly the hands and face and clothes), I've hurt my back, my chimney still blocked except for the bits on the floor, have got the fucking brush out though and I haven't even fucking eaten today and I'm laughing because we're OK and these little things don't really matter afuckingtall.

Thank you for making my day immeasurably better with this positive news, all power to you, old darling.  Cup of tea now, I think.
