Oh Boy!

... Sorta 90s brit pop indie vibes, I guess. I'm not normally so keen on that style, but this went in that direction and I just went with it, I think.

First class that. Not the kind of music I listen to these days, but that could very confidently tumble out of the radio.

Melodically it maybe lives in the vicinity of Superdrag/Weezer-post-comeback (but not shit).

Got another track up here. More boom bap instrumental hip hop, this one sampling a bright and cheerful South African jazz-funk tune.

Cartoon Violence

Having not made any music for years, I'm really enjoying throwing this stuff together, as the simplicity of it coupled with the fun of rummaging about in obscure music for some juicy nuggets is a really refreshing reintroduction to the craft.
I love that "Empty Bottle" by Dekkar is one of the related tracks (also, it's a good song).

The Mollusk

Cheers FM! (This is nags, btw)

"Empty Bottle" is one of the very few songs I've "liked" on SoundCloud which is almost certainly why that's come up, haha. I left an obnoxious "in-character" comment on it as well.

7 years ago I made an EP of tunes inspired by Goblin, John Carpenter and Fabio Frizzi as a mini-soundtrack to a nonexistent film. I called the project Dead Hotel and I swore to myself I'd keep it going because it was among the more well-realised music I'd ever committed myself to. I flaked on myself repeatedly and nothing more came of it, until during the last month where I've found myself actually writing proper tunes again, and really enjoying myself.

Finally, today, I can present the first proper song I've written and produced in maybe half a decade, which I am extremely pleased with. In addition to the above names, it's also strongly influenced by Mogwai and the Final Fantasy VII soundtrack. Here it is, then:

Actively seeking to piss off the jazz heads here by saying that I cut out all the silly solo gubbins and whittled it down into a tasty pop beat.

That's absolutely fucking gorgeous. Properly beautiful.

I've spent the last while putting together an album made up entirely of re-wirings and re-writings of old hymns and spirituals and gospel songs and the like, some of which I've known for years, some of which I'd only ever read in hymnals and hadn't actually ever heard anyone sing, beyond maybe a couple lines here or there. I'm not possessed of any faith, Christian or otherwise, but there's a lot of stuff going on in me and around me and in people that I love and in the world in general that I'm having a hard time processing. A lot of churning in my head that I'm having trouble articulating, either because I just can't or because I don't want to. Anyway I found something in these songs that allowed me to at least get somewhere near to touching those things without having to face them directly. I've uploaded the first and last tracks to the soundcloud, in case anyone's interested in hearing what it turned out like. The first is "Let All Mortal Flesh Keep Silence," which in its original state apparently dates back to at least AD 275, and the last is "It Is Finished, Blessed Jesus," the original of which was written around 1875 or thereabouts.

I have made many d'music but don't know about linking my Bandcamp or Soundclound here right now, so here's a stream-of-consciousness mashup thing I've been working on the last few days, and still has more to come - see how many samples you can recognise. (I know CAB regards mashups as the genre that ate itself, which is a valid assessment, but trust me this isn't your average early 2000s big beat chart topper)

Non Stop Dancer

This is a three tracker I did earlier in the year, which I've finally decided I do actually like and am proud of.

Yeah, this is very good!

Two recent tunes from me. Both stupidly dramatic big stabby synth things.

Another banger, good work The Mollusk!

It's my pal's birthday today and I made this for her! I've dug out my ms-20 and been having a lot of fun doing some sequencer based nonsense. Fans of Caterina Barbieri/Laurie Spiegel might enjoy?

Thank you!

I would return the listen but Audius simply does not work on my phone for some reason. Are they up on any other services?

Been thinking about dynamyte headdy a bit recently, and have a project next year writing tunes inspired by it with a mini orchestra/brass section, ala mark mottesbaugh's life aquatic soundtrack

Decided to set up a proper profile for the instrumental hip hop beats I've been making, since it's recently become apparent that it's quite a dedicated project now and not just a bit of lockdown fun. All tunes made using pilfered obscure music, all laboriously assembled in Reason 5 since I can't be fucked to learn how to use other software and I can't afford an MPC or whatever.

Here it is, then:

Hi guys...I haven't posted on here for a while but just wanted to share some music I released in 2020, before the year is out. Melancholy guitar pop I guess, for the most part. Maybe someone here will enjoy it...

A jangly powerpop-ish one: https://soundcloud.com/colin-gajewski/up-all-night

A slow one: https://soundcloud.com/colin-gajewski/unknown

Full album: https://soundcloud.com/colin-gajewski/sets/by-halves

The album is on Spotify etc as well but I think Neil prefers no Spotify links in here. Cheers and happy new year
