Help identifying a poem/short story

Sorry to start another of these threads, but I was hoping the CaB Collective could shed some light on this mystery...

When I was at primary school (in the mid-80s), I remember the headmaster reading out a poem (or it could have been a short story) about a mother cooking different meals for her family on each night of the week. The twist in the tale is that she's making each dish out of her own organs and, naturally enough, Friday's dinner is something involving her heart and she perishes shortly after the family have wolfed down their meals.

Sounds fucking horrendous when summarised like that (and Christ knows why he was telling it to a bunch of infants), but does this ring any bells for anyone? I've tried some Google-Fu, but the keywords "mother" and "poem" just come back a load of mawkish Mother's Day doggerel.
