Not really appropriate in the electronics sense. A motherboard is the host for other peripherals and provides their interfaces and power via a direct connection. The 'father' realtionship doesn't really fit with that.

I think it also goes back to the tradition (in the English-speaking world, at least) to bestow the female gender onto machines - ships, locomotives, aircraft, cars etc. (which apparently needs to stop). In electronics engineering this extends into cards or expansion boards that plug into the main systen board or motherboard - they are usually called daughter boards/cards[nb]However, I did BIOS work once on a new piece of kit where the hardware engineers had given their development prototype system boards the forenames of female pornstars and the plug-in expansion boards male pornstars forenames[/nb].
