I feel compelled to also point out that Pet Sounds occupies the precise nexus between twee and dogshit.

I won't mention the three very mainstream Paul Young songs that would leave a deep void in my soul if they were erased.

I unashamedly like

Love of the Common People
Wherever I Lay My Hat
Come Back and Stay
Im Gonna Tear Your Playhouse Down

Never really got the Paul Young derision.

Elderly Sumo Prophecy

He lost his voice completely and now sounds like a comedy act.

Indeed. The most depressing live perfomance I've ever seen. He sounds like Fozzie Bear.

I get the feeling he's fucked his vocal chords up permanently. He always had a rather strained, almost strangulated vocal style, it was like he was singing from the roof of his mouth, and although it sounded quite cool and unique, maybe it was doing irreparable damage.

I saw him a few years ago at an acoustic festival with his band, and for some reason their thing is to pretend that they're Mexican, despite clearly being white Englishmen. I don't remember him even singing very much, he just shouted "Arriba" or "Tequila" every now and again, as any true Mexican worth their salt (followed by tequila, then bite into the lime) is wont to do.

Psmith

Is this another one of those it's so bad it's good ,ironic threads I never get?
I'm old enough to remember, the best thing about Cliff was The Shadows.

All good

Common People, Hat and Everytime You Go are my three essential classics.

You might like my favourite record shop Dewt.

I approve, but I prefer Paul Young when I don't see him. His image doesn't fit with the weird way I interpret his songs. I would prefer it if he looked like a gypsy (am I allowed to say gypsy?)

If not then I'll claim that I meant this:

He could do a long, improvised freeform version of 'Toast'?

If you mean in a David Essex/Michael Elphick sense then I think you're allowed.

Haha, we tricked Pingers into saying Paul Young is good, everyone! We can stop pretending to like him now.

I reckon Cliff and BA Baracus and Alan Tarmey all had a big eye on Gerry Rafferty in this period. And a good thing too.
