Civil war in The UK

What do you reckon? Could we see civil war in this country for the first time in over 350 years? The fault lines are everywhere: urban/rural, Brexit/Remain, old/young, far-right/socialist, North/South and most strikingly, between the nations that constitute the United Kingdom. It's very possible that there could be violence on the Scottish border if Scotland is denied the right to choose its destiny.

The Balkanisation that's characterised politics in the West for the last few decades has begun to crystallise into opposing blocs, battle lines drawn.

Will you fight for the Roundheads or the Cavaliers? Will you fight with William Wallace or crush the rebellious Scots? Will you throw brickbats at Swastikas or march in Hugo Boss? Will you risk exposure, torture, ruination and death to oppose what you believe to be wrong?

These are questions that we've all asked ourselves in the shadow of WWII. Will we soon be able to answer?

EDIT: ...and Sex Pistols consider etc...

BlodwynPig

As long as it doesn't interfere with watching Corrie

Buelligan

That's it.  FWIW, I don't think violence is an answer, sometimes it's all that can be done but I don't think Britain's got there yet, not by a long way.  You need a general strike me fuckers.  You need to withdraw your labour and your consent, civil disobedience, that's the ticket.

I know you're being tongue-in-cheek, but I just want to mention that Wallace was a noble and no representative of the common Scotsman. Don't believe the Braveheart bullshit.

Butchers Blind

Nah, people are lazy.  Easier to post your displeasure on social media.

EOLAN

There's been 1-2 Civil Wars in the UK over the last century. Leading to some of the UK breaking off.
Great Britain might be a different story.

Is there any 'cause' you can trust enough, that you would soldier for them? I was watching The Irishman last night, and Jimmy Hoffa's story reminded me of my reasons for trusting no politicians. They don't care about you, they are only advancing their own pride and ego.

Mr Paul, I must say I have noticed in you a tendency to catastrophise.

Also he was Welsh. (Probably.)

We might get some riots, but not actual civil war. More like France than Ukraine. And even then, the British people tend to look down on rioting as frightfully common and just a bit foreign, which is why the pro-Brexit side won't do it, and the anti-Brexit/internationalist/liberal side wouldn't know a molotov cocktail from kombucha.

Norton Canes

Hoping a few metropolitan areas will devolve into soviets, that would be a great start.

Danger Man

I'll run away. Danger Man in a Suitcase.

Urinal Cake

I will fight on the side of the Sussexesesse against the Cambridges. This is the only plausible civil war scenario.

NoSleep

The UK civil war has just ended and the Confederates won.

There has been a shocking decline in both the quality and quantity of his establishment toadying.

Sony Walkman Prophecies

Step away from the news, step away now - unplug, delete, power down, uninstall. Whatever you have to do.

Elderly Sumo Prophecy

I think the North could probably have the South in a big pagger, if an equal number of combatants were chosen for each side. We'd twat your Dad as well, for good measure.

Sebastian Cobb

I think these laws coming down on protests could cause civil unrest.

If you're going to get hung for stealing a sheep you might as well fuck it as well and all that.

Also he was Welsh.

Just when I thought it couldn't get any worse. Really troubles my tartan, bothers my bonnet, and kvetches my kilt.

gilbertharding

If it's got to be Roundheads v Cavaliers again, I'd find it quite hard to pick sides.

I'm definitely a roundhead by instinct, but I hate the preachy, judgmental side of it too much.

Buelligan

They were both rubbish, let's be fair.

Shoulders?-Stomach!

I don't think the conditions are there really. It is a continuation of people making fucking stupid electoral choices then meekly accepting being treated like fucking shit, in fact worse, trying to cover their tracks by actually defending that! Wouldn't want to be shown up as a dull witted moron!

I do genuinely wonder if the Scots and Northern Irish have the minerals to force their issue in the next 5 years. If not now, when? I don't want to see the break up of the UK but at this point it's not the be all and end all anymore.

Hey. Don't lump us in the same category. Scottish people aren't planting any bombs.

You should be more worried about whether your hairline has the minerals to 'force the issue.'

If Scotland is denied the opportunity to hold another referendum and they break away unilaterally, I'll be up there with my nose pointing south.

The second US Civil War is kicking off on my doorstep on Monday, apparently: https://www.thedailybeast.com/charlottesville-banned-these-far-right-activists-but-theyre-bringing-their-guns-to-richmond

Thing is, these idiots actually have weapons - and are stupid enough to probably try something. Despite recent evidence to the contrary, I don't see anyone in the UK (on either side, and en masse) being that insane. Like Buellers says, a General Strike is the way to go. Also, Scotland can deny England 20% of their electricity supply if things get totally bonkers. Or people just moaning in Twitter will increase exponentially, probably.

Me and the Grand Council got together and discussed this. I put in a good word for you, Paul, but the Elders said nay, nay, nivir. Absolutely not, sirrah! There was a lot of stomping and broken glass. I eventually took the point.

Sorry, but it seems you're not allowed to come to Scotland.

Genuinely believe 90% of under 40s don't have enough conviction in anything to shed blood over it, myself included. Those over 40 who do are mostly fat old brexiteers who are in danger of keeling over when getting all red faced shouting at James OBrien about seeing too many adverts with a mixed race couple in a row. So no, basically.

Pseudopath

Yeah...I genuinely can't think of a potential catalyst which would motivate the bovine British public to take to the streets, let alone kick off on a grand scale.
