Every riff on this record is ridiculous:

Talking of Scott Kelly's bands, I'm going to nominate 4.05 in this clip as my favourite heavy moment in a song of all time. Dave "Final Boss of Hell" Edwards roaring backed by a riff that fucking sledgehammers you between the eyes:

Neurosis- Locust Star

Every single riff on Pantera's - Vulgar Display of Power!
Side A - yes!
Side B - like what you want but surely this is a sharp drop off -  Regular People, Live in A Hole? I won't have it :)

ps forgot to say nice riffbucket easytarget but adrian def plays the open-string lead on wasted years main riff because its his song.
Thanks fella.
Yeah, thought it might be H. I love loads of Maiden but he seems to write the fucking hits (especially in the 80s).

Death - Politicians in My Eyes. Especially the bit that comes in around 2:15.

Troggs - Strange Movies

Dream Death - You're Gonna Die up There. The bit around 2:10 - such an unexpected turn around.

Somehow this passed me by until about a week ago, but how can you not love Nails with some added Max Cavalera? I do love it when Nails go slower like this, the main riff in this is a fucking beast.

HUH!

Soundgarden have shit loads, but I love the intense sense of dread from this one:

I just came to post the exact same riff.  Our Tone was a freekin' riff monster wasn't he?

I think 90% of the bands/songs/riffs on this thread wouldn't even exist if he'd never picked up a guitar. One of a handful of people that you can honestly say single-handedly changed music in the 20th century.

Sometimes the simplest things are the most effective:

Iron Lung - Sexless/No Sex

The Saints - Erotic Neurotic

Discharge - Realities of War

Darkthrone - Det svartner nå (and the riff at 4.10 is just table-flipping, punch-yourself-in-the face genius)

Really Red - I Refuse to Sing

Corrupted - Paso Inferior

Ramones -  I Just Want To Have Something To Do

Pig Champion (RIP) from Poison Idea doesn't get nearly enough credit for some of the catchiest hardcore riffs ever written.

Crippled Angel

Just to Get Away

I mean I think songs centred around riff-based distorted guitars would still have happened in the 70s and 80s, but regardless Iommi directly influenced just about everyone in this thread (probably not ZZ Top to be honest).

let's give props to the first half of Sabbath

The Wizard
N.I.B.
Iron Man (SO MANY RIFFS)
Children of the Grave
Lord of this World
INTO THE VOID - INTRO RIFF THE BEST RIFF
Supernaut
Sabbra Cadabra (sadly the song isnt built around the riff as much as it should be. Metallica had the right idea, rather than a Rick Wakeman coda BRING BACK THE RIFF)
Hole in the Sky
Symptom of the Universe

God the last two Ozzy albums I can't remember any big riffs. I like some songs like Air Dance and Johnny Blade but still. I dont really like the LPs much if I'm honest. they're ok

Children of the Sea
Heaven and Hell (clearly pinched by Dio for Holy Diver)
THE SIGN OF THE SOUTHERN CROSS
The Mob Rules

somewhere there is an alternate universe where everybody thought Tony Martin Sabbath was awesome. because it is, Iommi is always worth listening to

Pauline Walnuts

I've always avoided the album with Ian thingy out of Deep Purple, but seeing it had a song called 'Stonehenge' I just had too:

That bit after 6:24 it's like something from Killing Joke's Revelations album.

Probably should go in here. Randy Holden of Blue Cheer has his solo album reissued (again) Remastered this time, so it sounds like it might finally capture at least a bit of the heaviness that those Blue Cheer live bootlegs give a sense of.

The detail that tickled me was that he would play live with SIXTEEN 200w Sunn amps. That would have to be seen/heard to be believed.

Wot, no A National Acrobat?

Speaking of Blue Cheer, was always fond of Out Of Focus.

I worship at the riff altar of Mr William Steer but near the top of the tree has to be Carneous Cacoffiny (has to be a cover as Earache have had all the non live Youtube clips of it taken down)
