Sorry to ask again - what about this one, with 16gb RAM, 1tb HDD and the i5 processor...£171.99, is that likely to be significantly better than the £100 one you mentioned above?

https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/DELL-HP-i5-QUAD-DESKTOP-TOWER-PC-TFT-COMPUTER-SET-16GB-WINDOWS-10-HDD-SSD/143293512683?hash=item215cf57beb:m:mY58V7AMQI8vj1S3XjFky4A

Cheers again!

Problem with that one is that you are getting either any of 390, 790, 990, 6200, 8200 and those models are SIGNIFICANTLY different in age and specifications. Personally I'd rather know what I was getting.

Sorry for all the links and thanks again Wilbur - I'm pretty sure you helped me out the last time back in 2012.

Anyone have much luck playing PC games on Mac via Wine?

My work computer is wayyyyyyy more powerful than my home one so I figure there's a chance it could play some of them better even with the constraints of wine

So many different things I don't know about haha! What about this one with the 7020, 16gb RAM and 1tb HD for £250? I'm basically willing to pay for whatever the best thing I can get for £300 (more if it's worth it) is, as ideally I want this one to last for as long as the last one did, eight years...

That looks fine. Only thing to bear in mind is that if you did want to stick a better graphics card in (which you probably won't) you'll be limited to a low profile card .

Ah I don't think that would be an issue, the only games I play are Football Manager (shite graphics) and Rollercoaster Tycoon 2 (old as fuck), so I doubt it would be a problem.

OH OH OH one last question - would I be able to easily upgrade to a bigger hard drive (2tb, maybe 4tb) if I wanted to?

Yes, those machines have space and a spare sata point so you could actually add an additional drive  unlike the newer models.

spec here  https://www.dell.com/support/manuals/uk/en/ukbsdt1/optiplex-7020-desktop/opt7020sffompub-v1/specifications?guid=guid-501c6863-5540-4daf-b90e-6ea2ca7910ec&lang=en-us if you are interested. They are quite nice little machines and reasonably fixable.

Thank you so much mate (and everyone else that chipped in with advice) - I know fuck all about this sort of thing, so the best case scenario was that I bought a shit one that exploded the next day. Worst case scenario was never actually having the confidence to go through with a purchase at all, and I one day die of dehydration after crying all the tears out of my body in frustration at my current one trying to load three tabs in Firefox while listening to songs in Winamp.

I do genuinely still use Winamp for new music before I decide if its worthy of my iTunes.

I just got the logitech G915, it fits the requirements of being low profile and mechanical whilst not sounding like a typewriter when I am on conference calls. The build is epic too

Ooh, that does look nice, thanks for the recommendation.  I've got a lot of time for Logitech so am minded to go for that, it certainly ticks all of the boxes I'm looking for.

I have a Quest and would like to play Half-Life Alyx. I have the option to get my hands on a PC but it's not cutting-edge. I'm not savvy about this stuff so not sure if this would be too much of a heap of shite to run it well:

Ryzen 2200g processor
8 GB of DDR4 memory
Sapphire RX470 graphics card

HL Alyx minimum requirements are:

Processor: Core i5-7500 / Ryzen 5 1600.
Memory: 12 GB RAM.
Graphics: GTX 1060 / RX 580 - 6GB VRAM.

But I've seen people online say they're running it surprisingly well at lower specs so fuck knows?

Any thoughts? It doesn't have to run it beautifully well, but I'd like it to look basically decent and playable. If this machine would just overall be a bit shitty for Alyx then I won't bother.

How much memory/VRAM does the RX470 have? The graphics card looks like it's going to be bottleneck, regardless. Edit: Looking at RX470 and RX480 comments - playable but prone to stutter in some circumstances?

(You can almost certainly increase the system RAM, of course.)

You'll struggle with that GPU :(

MINIMUM:
OS: Windows 10
Processor: Core i5-7500 / Ryzen 5 1600
Memory: 12 GB RAM
Graphics: GTX 1060 / RX 580 - 6GB VRAM

I would just like to thank you again for this recommendation, got this today.

Sure, it's rather expensive, but it meets all of my requirements and - more importantly - I didn't originally realise you could actually connect a keyboard via Bluetooth (I did look into this before purchase of the G915), so I can now literally just press either the Bluetooth or Lightspeed button on the keyboard to switch wirelessly between my work laptop and home PC.  As I have a similar button on my monitor to switch between work laptop and home PC, this is awesome.

I went for the tactile key option in the end, which also seems to be exactly what I wanted.

Sure, it's expensive, and I've only had it a day so haven't yet tested its full capabilities (I've been at work, so 'typing' was quite a key consideration), but so far as something I'm likely to use a lot I am liking it very much.

Next on my list of laziness/convenience is using only one MX Master and getting it to switch between work laptop and home PC (edit: managed that without too much difficulty).

I can now just press three buttons without getting out of my chair to switch effortlessly between my work and home set up, using the same keyboard, mouse and monitor, which is honestly fricking awesome.  Are Logitech doing wireless monitors yet?  Off to Google that now.  Should probably be going for exercise, but meh.

Thanks again!

Where's a reliable place I can order a new desktop PC from? I've been saving up for an absolute stonker so all I really need to know is where I can trust

If it's an absolute stonker you're after then places like PC Specialist, Chillblast, Overclockers, CyberPowerSystem, ComputerPlanet and Alienware could be good places to get started.

Spilled some water on my MacBook Air before. Charging ports were iffy, left it in the sun and it is now fine!

Why do all these places online seem to sell "gaming PCs" with mechanical hard drives only? I can't even stand using a mechanical drive as the system drive nowadays.

I'm a bit pissed, but I immediately want to upgrade the RAM and the graphics card options if that helps at all.

Can you recommend one in particular? I was looking at the 8gb Nvidia and 4x8gb ram

I'd certainly upgrade to the 4x8gb RAM as the price difference is relatively negligible, and even if you get the lower end 8GB Nvidia I think it would be worth it.

I agree about the case as well, if you wanted to shave a few quid off some of the cheaper cases look better than the one selected :)
