Going a bit glinner

I don't mean going off on one about women-are-human-females, I mean going off on one about something for months on end to the detriment of yourself, your work, and actually achieving anything with regards to the thing that's upsetting you in the first place.

I'm thinking too much about where I work sending people to die in private hospitals in another country. I'm using Twitter too much, and too many of posts there involve screenshots of an American healthcare company's investor report. No one gives a shit, and while there might be ways to change that - this sort of thing isn't one of them. Being frequently sad and angry about this isn't helping anyone.

Have you ever pointlessly worked yourself up into a damaging state about an issue for far too long? Were you fundamentally right in your feelings (like me) or did you work out that this was poorly redirected emotion about something else (also like me, but more like Graham)?

How did you stop? Did it require an intervention by a member of the Serafinowicz family?

Sin Agog

I did get a bit het-up over the whole 'middle-class' thing for awhile there.  To the point where I would swan into council houses and call them palatial.

I wish I could summon passion and conviction about something.

On the whole since I quit social media at the start of January I have avoided all this nonsense. Outrages come and go and I'm blissfully unaware. I highly recommend it.

However we did have some YouTube "public auditor" weirdo at my work recently and it riled me good and proper for a week or so. For those that dont know, it's the latest craze from the states where passive aggressive weirdos film in public places and wait til they are asked to stop filming so they can get views from the confrontation that follows. They do it under the pretence that they are acting in the interests of the public as they are testing whether staff know about laws surrounding privacy and photography.

Quite why security guards and librarians need to know about this shit when they have enough on their plates dealing with vulnerable and sometimes aggressive people does not occur to the loser posting these videos or the "freeman of the land" and "sovereign citizens" types goading him on in the comments below.

They take the piss out of the poor sods being filmed without permission, mocking their appearance and call them paedos, freemasons and tyrants. Anyone who sides with the public servants being harassed is a "bootlicker".

I spent way too much time watching and in the comments on these videos pointing out that this dickhead was actually hurting public services by wasting people's time like this but obviously it fell on death ears amongst this weird subculture.

In the end discussing and offering sympathy to the people who had been filmed helped. I suggested if he comes in again (he does visit places twice sometimes) to play copyrighted music throughout as this would likely cause him some issues when goes to upload shouldn't it?

This went down well with one or two of them but most didnt give a shit either way about the video. Because they're too busy getting on with their actual job of helping people and real life. So I suppose the advice is the same advice I'd give to Glinner. Get off the internet and get on with life, work and actually talk to people in real life.

Don't worry about it. Getting out of the NHS is wonderful, in my humble opinion.

I know, I know, the NHS is the last thing the UK has left that resembles a religion but it's really shit and is going to go the same way as the BBC and the Liberal Party on this forum give or take a few years or two.

Trump's welcome to it.

I have a friend who lives on a condominium of about 8 terraced houses. A recent residents' meeting voted that he had to not store work gear on the condo pavement outside his house, nor park quite so many of his cars on the kerbside.

He wants to move and be done with condo life, but he also wants to get revenge and so is seriously considering - to the point of having hired a solicitor - buying up a plot of land adjacent to that of the condominium where a lot of the residents store cars and garden equipment and the like with the sole intention of fencing it off to spite them. €75K the plot of land is going for, so as well as going off on one about the situation every chance he gets until he's red in the face he also wants to bankrupt himself. Insane.

More than one is cunt for a single person surely?

gib

We can't do much about that bgmnts, but what we can do is punish TC for being his friend.

For me it's (obviously) the importance of the destruction of neoliberal politics by left-wing challengers. But given that the world will actually end if that doesn't happen I think it's fair enough, really.

I keep seeing a flash of fear in people's eyes whenever they interview me.

Oh yeah? Well I think the NHS is good! Deal with THAT new paradigm!

He very much isn't. Between him and his partner it's two transit vans (he's one of them tradespeople), a beat up Golf and BMW of some description both from circa 2002, some even more beat up and even older red thing, a more modern BMW which doesn't run, has rats living in the seat fabric and which he received as payment for a job which they didn't have cash for. Four cars, two vans, though he's a terrible hoarder so I wouldn't be surprised if there are others I don't know about.

They rent their place in the condominium, and are terrible at budgeting so never seem to have any money. I asked how he planned to finance this mental revenge plan and he still owns a flat he lived in before moving in with his partner, which he reckons he'd get €55K for, so his plan will involve him selling his sole non-vehicular asset as well as getting a loan or mortgage to cover the rest of the cost. When I pressed him about whether he realised it was a nuts plan, he said "I'm German; this[nb]Revenge.[/nb] is what we do". It has worked out pretty well for that nation in the past to be fair.

Hell yes! What on Earth is the alternative?  My friends in UAE who are obliged to have health insurance say every time you go to the doctor they diagnose you with a fatal illness just so they can charge to do all the tests to prove it's not.  They then prescribe you pointless, expensive medication which takes you past your yearly limit, so don't do it in January.  One of my American friends fucked her back whilst living in Europe and is now pretty much stranded here because she can't get insurance cover in the US.  Compared to all that shit the NHS is always going to be better

The tooth under one of my front crowns managed to catch itself a bit of rot (badly fitted imo) and my private dentist wanted between £600 (best case scenario to rescue and re-crown) and £2500 (implant) to sort.  And charged me £66 just to tell me that.  Fuck having the same problem with healthcare.  GP visit? 60 quid please.  Need chemo for your cancer and you aren't lucky enough to have healthcare via your employer or to be able to afford health insurance (hope you're employed either way)?  Hope you have £70k lying around.

NHS isn't perfect but it's better than being bankrupted through ill health.   Plus, it's not that it's shit, it's that it's desperately under-funded.  Because people keep voting for Tories.  Because they think the problem with the NHS is actually all the foreigners...

Christ it's depressing reading more and more comments (here and on news sites etc) basically advocating for getting rid.  That's exactly what they want, suffocate the NHS until the American style right wing "tax is theft" nutjobs' rhetoric of it being nasty icky bargain basement healthcare spread around people's minds.

And you only have to Google a few symptoms to see how many American sites get all alarmist to entice you to "see your healthcare professional today!".  Farted too loudly?  CANCER.  Hand over some money for an appointment before it's too late!

Dewt

It's just people who want to buy into the idea that they're strong enough to support themselves independently but haven't figured out that having your life savings wiped out and given to multi-millionaires because you dared to get sick isn't a particularly strong move.

weekender

I'd probably accept an appointment between 2pm and 3pm with a Chinese dentist.

But then if one were to bring up the possibility that maybe mental health problems were blown way out of proportion for the very same reason, one would be hounded wouldn't one?

Probably.  Mental heath is a very volatile subject so it's probably not the best one to hang pro or anti private healthcare arguments on.

I know my fair share of Americans who seem to suffer through apparent depression and suicidal tendencies and don't get better though as they can't afford to see the doctor because they can't get a job because they have depression.

Dewt

It's the people who can pay outright for therapy that they are preying on. Most people really struggle to find good therapy.

Again, another reason to remove the private monopoly of healthcare.

I've been nursing a grudge against a Facebook group: "SPOTTED! The Cats Of Merrylee", who banned me after I posted what they said was a racist post, when it was just a bit of fun (I said the cats of Govanhill (A large Muslim community) all stank of curry).

Any normal Moderator might have asked me to remove the post, not banned me.

I know it's not healthy, and I should just let it go but I'd like to start a Facebook group to challenge the SPOTTED! people's dominance of the Merrylee cat-lover's hearts and minds. Steal their followers. Make them rue the day.

Also, they've got pics of my cat ("Simba" A real stunner) still up on their site. I've asked them to take them down, so far to no avail. If I'm not good enough for them, neither's Simba.

This is probably my glinner issue to be fair but I let it lie.

I was overly annoyed at the whole introvert/extrovert thing for a while. A few of my Facebook friends kept posting about it and I thought "Hmmm, some people are energised by socialising and others are energised by solitude, and this is determined by their genes? Interesting..." and then I looked into the "science" and found it was all utter bollocks, and this utter bollocks was being posted by people who should have known better- and who seemed to be really holding themselves back by believing in it.

It bothered me because when I was 12 and had just started secondary school, hoping it would be better than primary school but finding the people there were still awful, I decided that people were inherently bad and best avoided and withdrew into myself for a couple of years. Finding this actually just made me lonely and miserable, I realised I couldn't live like this and started making an effort to come out of my shell, talk to people more, and get my confidence back, and while it was hard work I'm very glad I did it.

If 12-year-old me had had access to Reddit I probably would have bought into this introvert/extrovert thing hook, line and sinker and decided I was really just too clever and special for my dumb extrovert classmates and didn't need to change, so I'm glad I didn't. I also find the notion that socially competent people just have an unfair genetic advantage really insulting- I worked bloody hard to develop my social skills, and I still work hard on them now.

I once saw someone describe that widely-shared "How To Care For Your Introvert" article on The Atlantic as "My Catcher In The Rye" and to me that's exactly what it seems like to a lot of young people taking it too seriously. As well as being one of the smuggest things ever written.
