Three Cheers for Haruomi "Harry" Hosono (and his many projects and associates)

I think this fella, besides seeming like a very cool person, is an absolutely fascinating musician, the diverse nature of his output one of the most impressive things about him. Some of his stuff is like a Japanese attempt at writing and performing American rock and country, with a sublime result . Theres Hosono house, an adorable album full of very laid back songs

There's his collaborative effort The Pacific, in which the theme is very much sand and surf beach surf music

And theres all his early endeavours onto the world of electronic and ambient music. This haunting, achingly sad but delicately beautiful album had a profound effect on me whilst listening late at night

Along with his work as one third of the Yellow Magic Orchestra, one of the most successful Japanese bands of all time. Although a lot of his solo stuff and stuff with these guys can sound very "of it's time" in some respects as a lot of electronic music can do, theres no denying how.pioneering and influential it was. Massively popular in the up and coming hiphop world. Some of it sounds incredibly akin to daft punk, just 20 odd years before. A lot of it is also predecessing the kind of thing youd hear in 8 and 16 bit computer games some years later. Future funk and Vapourwave (obviously derivative of this time by their nature) are also in prominent in a lot of his stuff.

I feel like I've only just scratched the surface with this mans output, and if any existing fans have any suggestions where to go next I'd be extremely grateful. Anyone new to this I'd heavily recommend having a perusal to hear some adventurous, creatively unhinged works or art 🛀

Just realised the links didnt post properly and they're all linking to the first album mentioned and cant edit it for some reason 🤬 but please search for the albums on spotify or youtube.

Him and YMO lot appear on some of Akiko Yano's stuff. She was married to Sakamoto at one point and part of their live band during the late 70s/early 80s. Everything I've heard of hers is great.

Also love this Seiko Matsuda song:

He also did the music for Koreeda's "Shoplifters". Can't actually remember the music in it but thought I'd give a mention since it's better than Parasite and everyone should see it.
