Who's got what? Anything interesting/odd/rare?

Interesting - I have a Shergold Marathon 6 bass (and a Masquerader on it's way), Rickenbacker 360/12 1992 model, double bound, toaster tops, and a bitzer Fender Electric XII with a maple fret board (not is repo, and I like maple), plus others.

Oddball must be the Soviet 'semistrunka' seven-string acoustic, eBay, £60, open-tuning. 

Rare? Back to the Shergold Marathon 6 bass, only 95 made, I had one in the early 90's, sold it, regretted it and eventually bought another a few years ago. My bro' bought on two last week so we've had between us 3% of them!

I've got a cheap Ibanez extended scale electric with some wood bits and stuff. Use it for tuning down to C standard/Drop A# for some SICK RIFFZZZ.

I have a Samick ES-330 copy and a Watkins ER-100 head with some random no name cab. I love it. I got rid of everything else, pedals, guitars, amps, etc, to reject gear acquisition syndrome.

I too have no pedals, plugins, modelling, nowt.

I like the tone of the 12 strings on the G string with the one decent amp I have, Fender Studio 85 - very Roger McGuinn, and also the Gretsch, a cheapish Electromatic, not through anything, it's the hollow body, wows and screams feedback and you can control it, and still a good tone too.

I did a bash on it a while back, Gretsch Electomatic, Fender Studio 85, nothing else apart for lack of ability and a stream of concienceneness, not even a tune or riff, was ace!

Gordon-Smith GS1. Been wanting a Junior-style guitar for a while. Gamlins in Cardiff is having a closing down sale, so I got this 20% off. Getting used to the P90 hum, having been a humbucker man for so long, but it's fun to thrash about on. Only 1 pickup to worry about. More versatile than you'd think. I might swap the pickup out for something hum-cancelling, if not just an actual humbucker. There are a few replacements that are a drop-in replacement for dogear P90s...

My favourite is still this, though:



Edwards Les Paul copy. Edwards are basically an offshoot of ESP that make more traditional guitars. Usually can't get these outside of Japan for obvious reasons. Pickups are currently Bare Knuckle Emeralds.

I've got the one on the far right (!) but with the wammy bar. It's a 1972 model I bought in 1995 which is longer ago now than it was when it was made.

I never use it for gigs though. Or any of my many other lovely guitars. No I use my 1992 mexican strat that I got for 60 quid from cash generator. Change the strings twice a year max. I'm the Albert Steptoe of the guitar world.

I don't play anymore but I still have a 1977 strat and a Cole Clark FL3 acoustic. I might play again someday and they'll be there if the urge takes me. Been 9 years now though so maybe it won't happen.

Got a Epiphone Les Paul and a pure 80s Charvel - white, red volume knob, green tone knob, floyd rose, hockey stick headstock, love it - and a Yamaha acoustic. And a couple of banjos.

The electric guitars are in a lockup in Hertfordshire somewhere (parents cleared them out - but only to make way for my dad's guitars and his ludicrous vintage banjos (which are very cool)).

Want to get a butterscotch tele like on The Last Waltz and like Bill Orcutt and everyone else plays. Also wanted a 355, hollowbody electric thing. Sort of gone off that idea now.

Really think I'll get the tele - can't stop thinking about it..

I have a Shergold Marathon 6 bass

Being a massive Genesis fan (and CaB's chief Phil Collins defender), an instrument I am VERY familiar with, with Mike Rutherford having played in concerts the 4, 6, 8 AND a custom detachable double neck from the late 70s to the early 80s. 


Alas my contribution to this thread will be the sad story I've told a few times before - I had an early 70s custom SG, similar to the one Frank Zappa played, which I got for a stupid cheap price out of the local paper because 1) it was pre-internet so you would still get people selling stuff just to clear out their house and they'd have no real clue as to what they were selling, and 2) because, whilst still absolutely playable and kept its tuning and everything, it had been a properly gigged guitar so it had plenty of battering, chips and scratches - FAR from showroom condition. 

Anyway, in 1997 a few things then happened simultaneously that made me get shot of it - my then guitar teacher moved to Scotland as he'd gone pro and I couldn't find another teacher who was charging as little as he was, I'd just passed my driving test and I'd got my first proper permanent job.  So...well, a teenager/young adult with an income needs a car more than they need a guitar, right?  So I sold it (for a fairly decent profit) for £450, which bought my first car (a G reg post-box red Ford Escort with 110k on the clock).

Standing back and looking at it diplomatically I honestly can't say if it was the right thing to do at the time or not, but it's something I regretted VERY quickly after, and ever since.  In fact selling that SG is one of THE biggest regrets of my life.  Sigh.

My bro' bought on two last week so we've had between us 3% of them!

Possible that one of those might've been one previously owned and played by Rutherford, as I believe he gave all of his Shergolds to a charity auction after the company folded in the early 90s.

Have a black Musicman Stingray 5 string bass guitar made circa. 2006. Not ultra rare or anything, but I did have to import it from the States cos I couldn't find one for sale in Ireland (well I'm sure a music shop would've gotten a new one for me in exchange for an extortionate fee). Sounds great and it's delightfully solid too. Could go around beating people over the head with it and the neck would still be straight.

Also a cheap but long lasting Korean electro acoustic (Sae Han) and a 12 string Tanglewood acoustic too.

Oh, and a 5 string Fender banjo.

You know that guitar that Kid Rock used in his videos when he was in his pomp, it was done out with a stars and stripes finish (unsurprisingly) and had his name written across it (even less unsurprisingly)? I had that, for a while, before I had to sell it for a reason (being skintypoos).

He's also get a proper Yamaha SG-2000, the heaviest guitar known to man. And the most headstock heavy, a real neck diver....

I have three Squiers: a Japanese Strat, a Jaguar short scale bass and a Bullet Mustang; a 12 string electric Revelation and a bunch of bits that, when eventually put together, will make an offset Telecaster. I've got my eyes on the new Squier Super Sonic that's meant to be out this year, but I think that's me getting dangerously close to becoming one of those guys that accumulate guitars for the sake of it without actually playing them in anger.

Fender partsocaster I built when I was 15. Fender wide range humbucker in the bridge, Gibson marauder humbucker in the bridge. Frankensteined together from various fender parts on a tele custom body from the '70s.

Few others but nothing that interesting.

It's in storage after the arrival of Ferris Jr but will have a dig around on my phone/iPad and see if I have any good photos. It's had several layers of paint over the years and a lot of it is chipped or worn off so it looks completely battered. No judgement pls.

Sold it for peanuts to pay a gas bill when I was in huge amounts of debt. I remember it was heavy and the pickup shielding didn't work, and the bridge was a load of shit so I had to file string grooves to make it stay in tune.

See also: every other nice bit of guitar kit I've ever had. Gibson les Paul Jr in TV yellow, my Japanese fender mustang, the fucking lot. About 5 others I can't even remember. Heartbreak.

No judgement at all from me - I massively admire anyone who can frankenstein an instrument from pre-existing bits and make it work.  I've seen so-say "simple" tutorials on youtube, but it all just looks like necromancy to me.

Me, with naked knees, with my own composition, on my bitzer Fender electric XII - built it myself from body and bastardised neck (replaced with maple fretboard), wonderful neck, so easy to play...

Talking of easy to play - the easiest and most comfortable guitar I ever played was a mate's el-cheapo Westone.  I think he bought it new for something like £125, but it was just a lovely instrument - weight, balance and ergonomics were all perfect, and it sounded better than a lot of prestige guitars I test drove.  Unfortunately the silly bastard broke it beyond repair during a house move some years ago and he's not been able to find that particular model anywhere since.

To be fair, for him it was (and still is, at least when he's playing Genesis stuff) purely practical - he'd routinely switch between basses and guitars in the same song (whilst also simultaneously playing bass pedals) and in the very early days of Genesis (when Ant Phillips was still with them) he found that he wasn't able to change instruments quick enough, so one day he took his stand-alone Rickenbacker bass and 12 string to his usual tech and said "cut the edges off these and then stick them together to make one instrument".  Soon after that, and when Genesis started to get big in 72/73, Rickenbacker made him a couple of proper double necks (from memory one with 4 string bass and 12 string guitar to match his previous frankenstein one, and one with 6 string guitar and 6 string bass), but by the time you get to late 76/early 77 he was needing multiple basses in different tunings and set-ups (including an 8 string, which I don't think Rickenbacker made at the time) to recreate all the intricacies from the studio albums and Shergold fit the bill.  He co-designed the detachable unit with them and the rest is Shergold history.

Odd that there's no mention of his 8 string in that article.  Perhaps it's one he kept with him.
