Exhibit 1

Stephanie Mills - The Medicine Song

Fantastic tune, great bass-line and stunning video for 1984 - Janelle Monae should weep at that. In contrast, Jackson's Thriller is all pomp and circumstance.

Robbie Nevil - C'est La Vie

Happy, happy mid eighties pop - no werewolves necessary.

Good call.

Word Up, too, of course.

Presumably we're keeping this to genres adjacent to the jazzy pop/soul stylings of Peak Jacko, yeah?  Like, I'm gonna be a knob if I start nominating anything off of Master Of Puppets or Beneath The Remains.

This could easily have got away with being new in 1994

Dr Beat is a better song than Thriller.

I prefer the demo of Thriller to Thriller

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0_Eb7MYSPd4

It has every element but the cheese, which makes it a much drowsier, chilled out groove.

Isn't 'Thriller' a somewhat low bar? Production is great but it has no real soul in it. 'Don't Stop Til You Get Enough' would be a tougher threshold, up there with the greatest singles of all time.

Shit Good Nose

FUCK!

Was just going to post Hear the Drummer Get Wicked, but then checked and saw it was 1990 :(

Okay, okay, how about this - from his own sister, Janet Jackson's Rhythm Nation?  Even she hardly ever does that song these days.

Thriller the song or the album? No one really rates the song anyway do they? What is this thread?

'Thriller' is still a great song. A classic Temperton groove. Is it as good as 'Sweet Freedom', his song for Michael McDonald though? No it is not.

Neither is it as good as Baby Don't Stop Me by Leon Ware. That was co-written by another genius of the groove, Marcos Valle (who recorded his own excellent version in '81).

This thread's as good as any to plug Mavis John's 'Use My Body' too. WHOA MAMA. Unbeatable.

But surely if you're going to take a song from Thriller as a high point for other 80s songs to be judged against, you have to choose Billie Jean.
Because it's much much better. Than most other things. By anyone else. Ever.

Duel by Propaganda. Was convinced for years this nearly got to number one when actually stalled at 19.

Love Rhythm Killers.

The timing of this thread is apposite as I've spent the last 2 weeks in a 1980s UK warehouse research thing. There's a fantastic Noel Watson set from Delirium in 1986 on Mixcloud that is well worth checking out.

Used to love this track - there's a great CJ Mackintosh remix full of breaks and scratches in a M|A|R|R|S style.

Their version of Don't Stop The Music on the b side was hot too
