How about songs by 80s one hit wonders that are better than the hit? I think 'Just Got Lucky' by Jo Boxers pisses all over 'Boxer Beat'.

Phyllis Nelson!

"Move Closer" was a tragedy. I'm sorry to have to remind you of it. Much better was "I Like You" sprinkled with a bit of Shep Pettibone magic.

Thriller the album? I'd've thought the song was considered at best the 3rd or 4th strongest song on the album.

I'd say Thriller is exactly mid-tier Thriller, quality-wise:

Billie Jean
Wanna Be Startin Somethin
Human Nature
Beat It
Thriller
PYT
Baby Be Mine
The Lady In My Life
The Girl is Mine

What makes Thriller such a huge pop culture staple then? Is it the fact it has a dance people can do?

It is a combination of the video, the album it came from and the fact that it may not be the best thing ever but it is still a fucking banger that is good to dance to

Whacking great overblown cinematic video + accompanying hype
Single release of the title track from an already-massively-successful album
Nicely produced, decent track

Plus anything that gives an immediate mental image when you hear/think about it (ie. Jacko in the red jacket, or going all zombified) tends to get burned into the cultural memory more than just a piece of music in its own right.

The System - This Is For You

I like The System - Lollipops & Everything, the lolloping groove sounds like proto vaporwave - if there was no vocal you could believe it was playing at 33rpm.

THIS IS WHAT I'M TALKING ABOUT

52nd Street - You're My Last Chance

Squelchy bassline - tick
Unsettling synth sting - tick
1st rate vocals - tick
Super "horror" themed video - tick

plus added comedy denouement.

Manchester band as well...UK could jive with the best back in the day

Shalamar - A Night To Remember. Belter.

Good shout. I've got a tremendous fondness for Take That To The Bank too...even if the lyrics are preposterous.

A Flock Of Seagulls - Space Age Love Song (12" Mix)

Only heard this for the first time last month. It's catchy as fook.

Hyperactive! by Thomas Dolby.. Brilliant promo video but I suppose this would be deemed as 'too clever-clever/ too quirky' for some folk?

Fucking brilliant tune, also apparently written for Michael Jackson who didn't respond to it so dolby just recorded it himself

Have we got 80 yet?

the majority are beige 80s pastiches, so I reckon we've still got 78 to go

I like the original Thriller-but I love this take on it by Lenny Henry when he was still funny.

Someone mentioned it on my legendary 'if you don't like this song then you don't like pop music' thread. Luckily I do like it.

And while we're on the subject, this is from 1990 but if you don't like it you don't like pop music. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=H8iDrGW39EA
