DWP still as appalling as it's possible to be

I know, it's a bit like going "Hey! This piss tastes like piss!", but in case you'd gone a day or two forgetting who are the Harvey Weinsteins of the public sector, it's these scumcunts

Blumf

That story is so fucked up, really am having trouble believing it. But there you are, it went to court and she won. That office must be cunt central.

bgmnts

Where is this hostile environment culture stemming from? Certainly not our government or the recent happenings in politics, because to say these are the result of racism or xenophobia is extreme misrepresentation and inability to deal with the fact left wing politics is rejected.

It's a mystery.

Shit Good Nose

Fucking hell - if anything even approaching that happened in the public sector department I work in, it would be an immediate formal inquiry, possibly immediate dismissal of the perpetrators, depending on the seriousness.  This particular incident would be an immediate dismissal job.

Pingers

I've had extensive dealings with the DWP over the last few years and I'm afraid the only conclusion is that it's deliberate and these are the people they want. Like you say, it wouldn't be tolerated elsewhere in the public sector. It makes sense - the only people who will willingly deny ill and disabled people the money they need to survive are psychopaths.

Shoulders?-Stomach!

QuoteIn a statement, the DWP said: "Racism is totally unacceptable and action will be taken against any staff found to be expressing such views.

"We take the judgement and the circumstances of this case very seriously."

You can almost hear the weary exhale of their minion employee as they shit this stuff to order.

I've just been told I'm only attending the Jobcentre twice in the next two months, so was feeling quite charitable to them.  This is vile, though.

Racism is completely at odds with the values of the Carphone Warehouse governmental departments tasked with allowing people to starve to death.

I've had quite a few dealings with the DWP over the years and have never had any problems. Therefore the DWP is great.

That's how it works, isn't it?

Cerys

They've taken two hundred quid off my monthly PIP, so I can't really comment.

I've gone off them now.

I once had a brush with the Epsom DWP and, despite having zero income, the little boy was sufficiently happy with his 'no benefits due' closer that I could have imagined him folding his arms afterwards, leaning back, and farting in satisfaction.  I then racked up nightmare-inducing credit card debt over the following months to avoid dying in a ditch.  Made me realise that there isn't a safety net, and served to strengthen my socialist outlook.  So they're not totally useless.

thenoise

I haven't dealt with them in over ten years, by the grace of God, but when I was forced to I found them rude, unhelpful liars who cancelled the benefits I was entitled to twice for no reason - once outright lying by claiming I had missed a meeting which I had attended (but of course couldn't prove). By all accounts they have got considerably worse since then. They are the worst possible human beings, a lot of sneering middle age women who have never had to worry about money looking down their noses at the prole scum for daring ask for a bit of help, overseen by the continual threat of violence from 8 foot gorillas in case any of us dare answer back.

Fucking hell, that's harsh. They've just taken £300 a month off my quiz-team friend but he was prepared for that because he is physically fit and well. He has severe and enduring mental illness and his psychiatrist had warned him he hadn't had a single long-term patient who had avoided losing some or all of their entitlement.  I had thought they were much less harsh on people with degenerative physical disabilities but that's awful, Cerys.

My friend texted me matter-of-factly when he got the letter last week, saying he's not going to appeal, he's just going to kill himself, but not until after his mum dies because it would upset her too much.

I'm in a similar place but DWP is VERY fortunately alright with me. Lucked out big time.

Do you think it's worth him appealing bgmnts? His diagnosis is Schizo Affective Disorder, he's in his late 40s and has never worked.

bgmnts

Oh sorry I just meant i'm on credit and will end it when mother kicks bucket, I havent put any of my depression or owt down just for these reasons. Thought about it for a very long time but decided against it.

I genuinely have no idea im so sorry, this system is fucking horrid.

Zetetic

I don't think the particular diagnosis will matter. (Although I vaguely note that "schizoaffective" tends to be a fairly esoteric one you accrue only after a while in services.)

Appeal [edit: via tribunal] success rates remain extremely high (70%ish?); without any other information, it seems worth trying.

Edit: Has he been through "mandatory reconsideration" at this point?
(Assuming this is PIP: https://www.turn2us.org.uk/Your-Situation/Ill-Injured-or-Disabled/Challenging-a-Personal-Independence-Payment-decisi/What-are-my-options)

Glebe

Nothing to add, except that is fucking appalling and horrendous shite.

Janie Jones

^^Thanks Zetetic, really useful, I'm seeing him at the weekend, we'll talk it through.

Interesting what you said about the esoteric diagnosis. He's been under the care of a psychiatrist (the same one!) for 30 years

Mandatory reconsiderations are almost always refused. They are simply intended as another demoralising blow, which they hope will deter the claimant from going to tribunal. If you're going to bother with the mandatory reconsideration then you might as well go into it expecting to take it to tribunal. I have my PIP assessment coming up next month. I first applied for it a few years ago and was refused - it was complete bollocks. I don't think the person who reviewed my case had even read the evidence I submitted and had possibly got my application mixed up with someone else's, because the only thing I got any points on was "We accept that you need an aid to bathe." I'd made no such claim - it was purely on mental health grounds. When I got refused I had just been through the stress of an ESA claim, which had made me really unwell, so I didn't have the energy to go through a tribunal on the PIP claim. I just left it, which is exactly what they want people to do. They know that many claimants are simply too unwell, and lack the necessary level of support, to go through this awful, dehumanising procedure.

I think the key fact in this story is not the DWP, but Wales.

As a sheep I object to being lumped in with two-legged fellow nationals who regard unmentionable practices as quid pro quo for grazing rights.

It's not really funny though, is it, butt?  Not if you give a fuck about anyone but yourself.

SWM gives a fuck about farmers worrying about their mortgages but only in the contrarian context.

I think that's it.

I'm half-Welsh. Chill out. Not everything is part of a wider move in some grand hegemonic proletarian struggle.
