Some incredible moments in the past few episodes: his mock japanese accent (collect ansaaa) and his chinese darts player Hu Flung That.

Fucking hell.

Great photo-fits of our time:

He was on Britain's Most Evil Killers on Pick last night. He'd also won a lot of money in a Spot The Ball contest before taking part in Bullseye. But  they didn't show any footage of the show itself. Swizz!

Incidentally, as The Chase was mentioned in this thread I'd like to point out that I know one of the contestants from a few weeks ago. And she used to fancy me.  Take it from me that's such a rarity that I even recorded the show for eternity. Look what you could have won.

It's actually not too bad. Spikey's a decent host and has got the comedy chops to keep it rolling along.

The main difference you will note is that the contestants all work in HR or similar now, and most people go for the gamble as the idea of actually needing the money and prizes (or being altruistic to your fellow contestants) has kind of gone out of the window by the noughties.

Other superficial (budgetary) differences are it's £150 for the bull, and the prizes tend to be frivolous stuff like DAB radios and mini fridges from MyCoolWankyShite.co.uk. No nests of tables or terrariums.

Edit: and the audience are less ugly

Also, it was a celeb doing the charity throw and he didn't get £60 start.

The father of a guy I work with was on the very first episode. Not sure I've ever been more impressed with anything as I was when he told me this.

I was thinking of starting a thread about Supermarket Sweep but thought I'd use the Bullseye one for some retro gameshow appreciation.

It's just 10am-11am during my furlough has been quiet kids, Dale is on time. I genuinely love the pared back, simple approach the show takes sort of 1993-1999. It barely modernises over time and Winton is a cracking game show host. It has a beautifully simple formula, a bit of chat and then legging it round the supermarket. I think part of it's early charm is down to the contestants approach to being on TV; a charm I always felt on Bullseye. They're usually a bit camera shy and unimposing.

Fast forward to the Rylan series and Jesus fucking hell, it's a pile of wank. The contestans look like they belong on Love Island and it's like volume 11 tv. Awful stuff.

The Alan Carr reboot of Bullseye was (obviously) an awful pile of wank. The final prize round was completely new to me and, of course, there was no way they'd let the contestants lose. They did a spoof prize - a speedboat - which should have been an easy laugh, but it was amazing how they fucked all the life out of the joke.

One thing that kept true to the original though was that none of the contestants appeared to have ever seen a dartboard let alone thrown a dart in their entire lives.

I saw one which had that old lady out of Eggheads in it and she looked old back then too.  K, thanks for listening to my shitty ageism.

Definitely "a man of his time" in terms of some of the quips so I'm not too surprised they edited some out, if only to spare him a posthumous Twitter cancellation :)  He seemed pretty down to earth really.

I like that it all feels fairly low stakes and contestant-friendly. Like darts used to be. Like quizzes used to be.

I member.  Back when contestants had a reasonable chance of winning and at least if they lost they got a souvenir.

Before Anne Robinson ushered in the ruthless era of "YOU'RE SHIT AND YOU LEAVE WITH NOTHING" which has been a staple of quiz shows ever since.
"Pfft, end of the day, just another day at the office"

I like the bit where he's paying out the money from a big wad of notes, like Jim is paying them cash in hand for the new conservatory they've put in for him.

But enough about the shit Alan Carr reboot, let's just talk about the original Jim Bowen version. AHAHAHAHAHA.

Did they really edit them? In the ones I've seen, he's at least still incredibly patronising to any team of two women. "Well, you lost and you're going home with twenty quid, but that's not bad for a pair of birds is it?" [may not be actual quote]

On Bother's Bar I read that they had to redo the final four times until they won.

One wee thing about the Carr version of this that was on at the weekend.

Peter Kay's routine[nb]act[/nb] is about nostalgia.

This show is aimed at young people, just like the version of catchphrase that Stephen Mulhern presents. Chances are this Epic Gameshow series is a series of backdoor pilots.

Anyway.

This shit with the speedboat has to fucking stop, because it isn't people laughing at Bullseye having speedboats as a prize, it's laughing at a Peter Kay routine laughing at Bullseye having speedboats as a prize that the target audience won't have seen.

It's done out of a sense of obligation - 'you can't talk about Bullseye without talking about the speedboat' - that now skips the step of someone charismatic and funny making the observation in the wider context of an entire show based around nostalgia.

Remember when they relaunched Bullseye about 20 years ago with Peter Kay collaborator Dave Spikey as co-host, and he  said with dead-eyed desperation "you never know, someone might even win a speedboat" within the first five minutes, attaching a sense of nostalgia to the then already-classic Peter Kay bit about Bullseye speedboat nostalgia? It was horrible. Like taking credit for a mate's gag, as if it was something you and your audience had thought of as well. Maybe you remember it, but your mate's the one that's made it the ingredient of a joke.

Well, this is WORSE, because of how hard they leaned on the speedboat thing, from the mention to the 'sketch' later on. Worse because it's not funny (it isn't funny just to point out that Bullseye had speedboat prizes), worse because the Peter Kay routine is no longer ubiquitous, worse because it's done because they felt they had to.

I'm sick of cunts bringing up speedboats when they talk about Bullseye. Bullseye was lovely brown analog fuzz, friendly and funny, and has become a soothing late night salve and antidote to the exact sort of thing this reboot channels. It was so, so much more than the one vehicle people associate it with, but I don't blame Peter Kay for that, I blame everyone else for thinking that what Peter Kay did was fair game. Get you up on stage and become a millionaire then, ya cunt.

Re the Kay routine, Frank Skinner did a similar one years before, with two guys from Tipton winning a speedboat and saying "it's got to be worth about fifty quid in scrap..."

You say "taking credit for a mate's gag", but to be fair if it was part of Peter Kay's act it was probably Dave Spikey's gag in the first place.

Gulftastic

I'm sure I remember Sean Hughes doing the speedboat stuff years ago, talking about the winner dragging the boat through their housing estate in Rochdale because they were so determined to use it.

JesusAndYourBush

I don't think I've even seen the Peter Kay routine but the speedboat thing was a joke that was going around possibly even as far back as  when the original show was on the air.  Some other comedian made the observation a long time before he stole it.  Someone like Lenny Henry or Jasper Carrott, with the punchline being (after mentioning the winning of the speedboat) "But we live in a block of flats in Birmingham!"

magval

Point is that the garlic-breaders who're parroting it didn't hear Sean Hughes or Frank Skinner say it, they heard Peter Kay say it on the copy of his DVD they traded into CEX to sell on for 50p.

One I saw a clip of (problematic TV compilation on youtube or something) was two blokes and upon saying they lived together his eyebrow shot up to the roof "oh aye?!" - "yeah we're brothers" - "oh... oh well, that's alright then..."

I guess whether they edit them out might depend on complaints

There's a few bits up on youtube that would be canditates for cutting out such as:

"Jim Bowen pats female Bullseye contestant on the arse"
"Jim Bowen's Holocaust joke"

Sounds like Jim had a lucky escape from the metoo crowd if he was doing arse patting

That's from when they moved Bullseye to Saturday afternoons before cancelling it. Looks like they spent 10p on that intro.

Jim Bowen even made a joke about it during the original series. He started off the show with an 'amusing anecdote' about visiting previous winners and seeing the speedboat had never been used. Which was kind of meta, when you think about it.
