Anderson getting through a few overs is good.

Other than that, can't really see the point of a 14 a side game. It's already quite far removed from test conditions so why make it even more so. Wasting time with Bracey, Gregory, Lawrence, Jamie Overton and so on who aren't going to feature in the series.

feels like he's the most under-talked about of the post-war greats. must have been a smashing player.

Joe Denly made 48 in yesterday’s warm-up but I see he was also bowled off a no-ball for 12. What’s the average of 12 and 48?

13-man squad named by England, no new names despite 82% of county players getting a call-up for the warm-up and Lawrence being apparently most impressive.

Root's absence for the birth of his first child solves the problem of how to fit in so many UNDROPPABLE batsmen in the top three, looking like a top four of Burns-Sibley-Denley-Crawley.

Buttler keeps the gloves.

Bess the nominated spinner so three of Anderson, Broad, Woakes, Archer and Wood to play. I guess the first two and Archer to begin with then they'll rotate over the following tests.

I know Bairstow is complete virus but what’s with the persistence with Buttler? Does he have some sort of dossier on Ed Smith or something?

Utterly pointless isn't it? The one mythical innings his test career has persisted off the prospect of but never happened or looked like happening. The only thing it does it fuck his confidence and subdue his one day performances. Then you have Foakes who is a) available b) did pretty well when picked c) is clearly only ever going to be a test specialist.

Dom Sibley has lost 12kg since this shot was taken, providing succour to fat cunts everywhere that as long as you can nudge singles into the on-side you can be carrying timber.

Fortunately this means a full day's play on Friday when I am having a mate over to share a keg of Tomos & Lilford's Nash Point.

If it rains can't they just all get on the team bus and go to where it's not raining and play there?

Broad set to miss out. Seemingly either Wood or Anderson are guaranteed picks if they are fit. As is Archer, of course. I wonder if Stokes will use Archer more circumspectly.

Either way I'd have gone for line and length, not pace. Broad or Woakes over Wood.

Oh wait I forgot it's going to rain

Don’t really see the point of dropping Broad. His home record recently is excellent. This to me smacks of “They absolutely pelted us with quick stuff away so let’s give them some back at home” as opposed to actually playing to our strengths.

Wood did really well in the Caribbean last time and against SA in the winter but him and Archer in the same team is a big risk and they’ll need Bess and Captain Stokes to get through an awful lot of overs, especially given Anderson is 38 and coming back from the best part of a year out.
Broad has been really consistent over the last couple of years, always tight and probing even if rarely catching fire the way he used to, but as we know the current selectors get overexcited by things going ZOOM POW KABLAM.

I almost cried when I saw the weather forecast, been waiting for Test Cricket to return for so long now, how typically English it is that it’s going to piss down for a large part of it. Still, based on the past few years as long as there’s 3 days play there’s a decent chance of a result.

Hope Broad isn’t dropped, I’ve come to the conclusion recently that he *may* be my all time favourite England player.

Denly and Buttler still there and Stokes batting above Pope

Why fucking why

Denly presumably makes way once Root is back, I can live with that. He’s clearly not good enough, and I don’t think he should ever have been in the team, but it has to be said there was a time there where his scratchy 30 run innings were holding the innings together all too often.

Buttler I’m completely done with at test level. My big worry on the wickie front though is if they try to shoehorn Pope into the role. Be just like us to pull that shit and ruin the kid.
