Axar looks a seriously good bowler, while Root is a handy occasional bowler who is particularly dangerous in these conditions.

That was different. A definite spike when the ball was next to the bat, before it got to the pad, on the first view. Then changed to a view without Ultraedge. Then back to the original view and the spike was somewhat flattened.

Personally, if I were batting, and the ball was going to hit the stumps, I'd simply hit it with the bat, rather than let it hit my legs.

Yeah, the vibe seems to be England didn't really have a choice as they have no confidence in Bess.

Again though, we've made the classic mistake of overly focusing on the bowling department when Root aside, our batting is complete blood disease at the moment.

They have opened the bowling with Joe Root ffs. I know Bess bowled 5 full tosses to Kohli but perhaps he shouldn't be thrown to the wolves. Also, the tests he is playing in we keep winning.
