Genuinely shocked by this news. RIP to a legend of music, a true inspiration to me

the science eel

A genuine eccentric and pioneer.

And responsible of course for the greatest 45 ever.

A delightful interview here about the meaning behind that: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FVwlKMK_eGs

A very kind, gentle, caring soul. I'll remember s/him best for the Breezeblock sessions s/he did with Cosi Fanni Tutti.

purlieu

A true original, the likes of whom come along very rarely. RIP.

Aww.  Saw Throbbing Gristle once at Heaven Under the Arches.  I temporarily lost my mind and forgot to bring earplugs.  When I found myself edged towards the speakers, the only thing to do was whip a fiver out of my wallet and fashion expensive single-use earplugs out of it.

I laughed, you droll bastard.

I'll remember him for being a complete arsehole to Cosey Fanni Tutti ( as detailed in her possibly biased autobiography) , for moving music journo Danny Kelly to grass him up to the authorities, as he was genuinely concerned about some of his more dodgy behaviour, and for looking a bit like Giles Brandreth. Last night, I Didn't listen to " 20 Jazz Funk Greats" in his honour, in keeping with not listening to that album, and probably never will.

In fairness though, he was quite the innovator, an artist truly committed and devoted to his art, and an artist who suffered for his art (and then it was your turn). I mean, he lived in Hull for a number of years.

Pronounn is s/he, for future reference.

I like how they get a bit carried away and refer to yer woman Cosey Fanni Tutti as " H/er" in that obit. Just hope Graham Linehan doesn't read that piece, he'll go into conniptions, so he will.

Imagine someone like Genesis P-Orridge (or a 'band' like Throbbing Gristle) emerging today. I can't imagine it would be possible. The meaning of art, fame, irony, self-promotion etc. have all changed way too much. Is that a bad thing? Fuck knows.

Bobby Treetops

By all means a bit of a cunt, but still a fascinating, engaging and intelligent human being.

Partly responsible (although s/he'd would have probably tried to gain all the credit) for two of my favourites clips on YouTube.

For someone who doesn't know all that much about him beyond a few tunes and the who police thing, why was he a cunt?

From reviews of Cosey's book. No reason not to believe her.

QuoteThere's a mordant humor to Tutti's accounts of P-Orridge's alleged regular assaults, which worsen when she leaves h/er for Carter. Tutti writes that P-Orridge strangles her, kicks her vagina, and tries to stab her, and the scene snaps from horror to farce when she accidentally runs P-Orridge over. Later, s/he allegedly throws a cinderblock at Tutti's head from a balcony. (P-Orridge hasn't responded publicly to the allegations in the book.) But Tutti's withering accounts of h/er petulance might be more damning to h/er significant legacy in alternative music.

http://www.mtv.com/news/3014200/cosey-fanni-tutti-art-sex-music/

QuoteFanni Tutti recalls a series of alleged incidents in Art Sex Music, all denied by P-Orridge to the New York Times: how P-Orridge threw a concrete block at her head from a balcony, apparently aiming to kill her, and missed. How she allegedly pressured Fanni Tutti into frequent unprotected sex, which led her to seek an abortion. How she ran at her with a knife after Fanni Tutti threatened to end their relationship. How P-Orridge appointed herself chief supervisor of COUM's frequent orgies and expected Fanni Tutti to have sex with various friends "instigated by and shared with [P-Orridge]". There are repeat alleged incidences of P-Orridge forcing Fanni Tutti out of their shared living space.

Twitter cuntery in a nutshell. No thought for what the intent was. No thought that Ronson might not be aware of the abuse. Just attack from the off

Puce Moment

Huge fan of TG, but perhaps because Porridge is such a cunt, I drifted towards Coil and Carter & Cosey during the 80s and 90s. I also saw them at those Heaven gigs, which is something I am very grateful for. Seeing Sleazy bashing away at his sound fx boxes, Carter silently working through his tape loops, and Cosey playing her cornet through an echo unit. Wonderful.

Yes, P-orridge was clearly not a nice person, but holy fuck, the media crucifixion was brutal after that turgid documentary which exploded into a media witchhunt.

Ronson typing :-( at the end of his RIP message. I suppose it's better than boo hoo.

BlodwynPig

My first experience of Orridge was on his collaboration with Nik Turner, which was unsettling at the time, not knowing anything about him. But thanks to that, I discovered an interest in Psychic TV and Throbbing Gristle

I wonder why she picked on Jon? (Insert that chin stroking emoji)

And later that evening tells people to watch the Miles Davis doc, and posts afterwards:

'genius . All the darkness is there but my god he changed everything,'

She is just the fucking pits.

The sheer hypocrisy and lack of self-awareness of these arseholes is staggering.

Ronson, clearly, was paying tribute to a musician he admires, he wasn't endorsing Orridge's abusive behaviour (which he was completely unaware of anyway).

Gah. Twitter is a cesspit.

35 years and still going strong. 35 years marking the time I actually fancied her before she turned into mad cat lady about 20 years ago
