Games where the main mechanic gets on your tits

Majoras Mask, fantastic game, never feels as epic as OOT,masks are lots of fun, but the other main mechanic, rewinding time really gets on my tits at times(pun intended?).Not all of the time, but you go all the way up Snowy Peaks of whatever it's called, trying to find secrets, ah shit gotta go back to day one, or ah fuck missed that prick running around at x o'clock.  Now I don't hate this mechanic and it doesn't make the game really hard, there are many ways around it, but sometimes I want that handsome moon to pancake the planet.

Resident Evil 0, character swapping and item dropping/sharing or zapping as it got coined. I love RE0,looks gorgeous on release, good pacing about it, I liked the enemies even if they were just roid rage animal kingdom.  But zapping, got tedious fast, it's even worse of replays despite knowing what items to carry, I'm glad they fucked it off.

Swapping characters was great , it added a cool new twist to the gameplay, but fucking hell yes the decision to remove item boxes was insane.

Dark Souls' stamina mechanic.
Any survival mechanic.

James Rolfe did a fun video about Majora's Mask, and how stupid the time mechanic is.

Majora's Mask was ruined for me my that damned mechanic. I remember I came across some fetch quest where you had to revisit a bunch of dungeons for objects in the time limit and I was like FUCK THIIIIIS

Never finished it. sold it a few months ago so will take the failure to my grave

I think along with digitiser stopping it was the nail in the coffin for me playing games

Utter Shit

I don't think I've ever played a Garage Simulation game.

Did you know how to slow down time? It's crazy how poorly they explain that, one character making a vague reference to it just once. The game must be a nightmare if you don't realise that.

Mister Six

Probably not as annoying as the time thing, but I hated the wind-controlling mechanic in Wind Waker. It was all right at first, but having to hammer out the same shitty little tune every time I wanted to turn my boat around was a right pain in the arse. Couldn't they have just made it a quick-select thing after a bit?

I've said this more than once over the years and no one has agreed with me, but bollocks to 'em: climbing up the monsters in Shallow of the Colossus is dull as fuck. Fans of the game say it's unbearably tense, but that's because they're thick.

I think the wind mechanic in Wind Waker is much more annoying than the three day cycle in MM. Majora's Mask makes great use of that cycle, in all sorts of ways - an interesting approach to side-quests, a pervading sense of dread, a thematic relevance. Windwaker's wind is just a pointless faff that barely even impacts the gameplay or story - it's really very superficial, even on the ocean.

The Wii U HD remake does indeed fix the wind mechanic, by introducing a "Swift Sail" early in the game. Once you win it, it effectively renders the wind song irrelevant, and allows you to sail faster and in any direction at all times. It's one of several ways they improved that game considerably in the remake - the other big improvement being the way they significantly cut down the Triforce quest at the end.

Mister Six

Ah, grand. I did like the rest of the game, mind.

They'll hopefully stick it on Switch at some point.  I love Wind Waker, but more for the endearing world and atmosphere than the slightly pedestrian gameplay.

All turn-based games

Turn based strategy is fine in my opinion, its is just a flash board game, but christ.....

... turn based combat (thinking of FF7 type stuff) is awful and sucks the life out of it.

Pitstop 2 on the C64. Hurry up and change my tyres you twat. I've got a race on here, and you're casually strolling around the pit like you're on an afternoon ramble. You're fired.

The free running in any Ass Cred game, the dude never goes the obvious, logical place to go and he half jumps up dumb walls every 10 seconds because you dared approach it at a 10 degree angle

I found that it was alright before 3, when they streamlined it and basically took away a dedicated jump button.

Cold Meat Platter

Saving those thick cunts in Schindler's List 64 is an exercise in frustration. AI has come on leaps and bounds since then, thank fuck.

Dead Rising's escort mechanic, if that counts.

Guns and shooting in Tomb Raider are the height of tedium.

The release of the appositely titled Doom Eternal has reminded me that Doom 3 really bollocksed up the shooting. I know it was going in more of a survival horror direction and you're supposed to feel weak and vulnerable, but it was just a bit rubbish.

Elderly Sumo Prophecy

Can I just shock you? I'm playing Doom 3 RIGHT THIS VERY SECOND, handheld on the Switch, and I'm shooting pretty good.

I'm not shocked. Just disappointed.
