Is it selfish to not socially distance yourself?

In this case I think a few months of not doing things like seeing family, going to pubs and restaurants, etc. is a sacrifice worth making in the long run. If we're talking doing that for the next several years, maybe not. But people have had to make bigger sacrifices in times of war, being separated from children for years, rationing, spending nights in air raid shelters, etc. Not being able to go to bingo isn't really that bad.

That could depend on whether you are alone. If you have an immediate family or lover then life in those circumstances will be quite different, for better or worse. We will have to develop ways of socialising for people who are alone. What do you think will happen to mental health and the suicide rate in conditions of moreorless total lockdown?

Buelligan

The old fellow that gave me the bug phones me every morning to find out how I am.  I talk to him for a good old while because I know he's phoning because he's alone and there's not even any sport on the telly.  I think those sorts of changes might mean a small sacrifice for some but they might also mean that old people feeling lonely won't get ignored so much.  Hope so.

True. I tend to forget about that as I generally like being alone but I have a lot of close friends and relatives who need social interaction. Things like Skype and even online gaming can definitely help create a sense of connection with others if available to those people.

I'm a bit glad we're on lockdown. no use agonizing over this anymore

Newcastle meet? ;)

SpiderChrist

Staying in (occasional shop visits notwithstanding) and working from home, as both myself and SpiderChrist Jnr are asthmatic, and therefore in the "at risk" bracket. Meanwhile, the letting agency we rent from are still allowing contractors to visit houses to carry out work, and wanted a spark to visit today to install a new fusebox and smoke detector. When I asked about cancelling I was told I was "within my rights to do so" but they wanted it in writing so the landlord doesn't fall foul of new legislation. I was also asked to consider the effect of my actions on the income stream of the sparky in question.

The health of me and Junior didn't seem to be a factor.

So hang on, as a fat young person with a long term cough and some very mild breathing difficulties, will getting this actually make me DEAD SOON? Was going to go to ASDA to stock up on pot noodles and those 2 for £2.50 tortellinis but now i'm worrying.

Buelligan

We just don't know bgmnts.  That's half the problem really.

Danger Man

Just had a haircut and popped into a cafe.

How you like me now??

Yeah, this is already making me horribly depressed and the idea of being alone for the next few months is really giving me the fear. My mother is by herself in another town too. I don't know how she's going to cope.

Buelligan

Don't have the fear, it will be OK, honestly it will, you'll still have us.

Count your calories and eat the amount that a sedentary person of your size needs to slowly lose weight. It's going to help you on several levels.

Even if you're eating shit food you can still lose weight and that still helps more than anything.

PM me if you want a fruity discussion about Contrapoints. That should take your mind off everything.

Had to buy workshoes today from a young woman in Sports Direct who had clearly been told to keep 1.5m from customers, but she was only about 5ft tall and her arms weren't anywhere near long enough and she got herself into a right mess. The woman at the till asked me how it was affecting me then burst into tears and asked me if I think she should go over to Tesco after work and give them a CV.

Danger Man

In the pub for the last time. Loads of people acting like it's new year's eve. People singing que sera sera and, inexplicably,  hey jude at full volume.  Staff have put everything from the kitchen on some tables and said it's all free. Strange days.

Thanks. Yes, at least there's still this place. It's not the same as seeing people in person, though.

I hope that was all individually wrapped items and not, say, bowls of snacks everyone was dipping in to.

Danger Man

Boxes and binbags.

But the only person who took anything was my pubmate Pete who went mental and stuffed as many onions as possible into his backpack while the rest of the pub was doing the nanananah bit of Hey Jude at full volume.

Strange days.

Buelligan
