as long as i'm still going to work i'm going to continue my normal life. it isn't selfish. i mean i'm just going to work and then the gym for about an hour a night. the advice is to stay home if you have symptoms, which i don't, so it's fine.

But surely, it's not the risk of each individual activity, it's the adding of each activity to one's other activities?  That's what multiplies the risk.

There's a painful non-linearity and unpredictability to it as well, which I think makes it harder to come to terms with.

Each chocolate or vote brings you closer to the outcome by a vaguely understandable degree - even if ultimately you usually can't point to any particular one as causally necessary and after a certain point (which you won't know at the time) additions are most over-determining the result.

By contrast each abrogation of social distancing may or may not extend a great chain of transmission, and those specific chains are contingent on others' movements. Going to the pub might be the difference between century of lives lost somewhere and not, or it might be no difference at all.

doesn't say gyms does it smarty pants. i don't go near anyone at the gym anyway, they're all terrifying. i'm still a very good boy, and there is really nothing anyone can say that will convince me otherwise

Even I have stopped going to the pub since last Friday, and I was an every day'er.  I hope they have enough spare cash to tide them over while the government fucks them (instead of the govt doing the decent thing and forcing them to close so they can claim their insurance).

Seriously can't wait til this all blows over and hope it's just for a couple of weeks - that first "peacetime" pint will taste sooooo good.

It's looking likely that I'll be taking a risk at the weekend and taking a friend around a couple of shops, maybe even hugging.   I'll make a special exception as he just lost his mother a few days ago.  Hopefully that isn't unreasonable.  There's a balance to be had between being careful and being cold hearted.

It interests me that there is a better way of doing this - UK or Europe. If I tried to go to the gym I could get charged and fined. I've been out twice this week - once walking the dogs, once to pick up a pipe repair piece since the main water pipe sprung a serious leak in our house - that was an odyssey, had to ring them while stood outside and wait for a guy to bring it from the warehouse with my exact change since customers are not allowed on the premises any more.

We're not walking the dogs now, just running around the garden with them, because there are lots of stories in the paper of people taking advantage of their status as dog owners and using it as an excuse to break the self-isolation. So the social pressure got to us. I'm doing body-weight exercises at home instead of going to the gym - it's barely an inconvenience.

Part of me wants to say it's all an over-reaction, but we definitely convince ourselves that "our" way is best - I am happy with my enforced self-isolation, please give me more Mr Sanchez. Having said that, I am going shopping tomorrow for the first time in a week - we could survive on what we've got but we're out of fresh fruit and veg.

Is it the case that the UK is following Europe, but just a week behind? Will UK citizens react to enforced self-isolation well?
