The Johnson government has pursued the 'herd immunity' strategy for weeks, despite health advisers, other states, the WHO and the editor of The Lancet among others saying that it was wrong. Now there's been a massive backpedal, they're claiming that it wasn't really the strategy and that they've changed tack because the science has changed, which isn't true. The weeks we had to properly prepare for what's to come and the opportunity to put proper measures in place has been blown. Almost certainly more elderly and vulnerable people could die as a result.

Clearly more than at any other time we need journalists to be holding the government to account, calling out their mistakes and examining what they're doing thoroughly and critically, as lives depend on them getting this right. So basically we're fucked because the media are more a propaganda arm of the Conservative Party than ever, simply believing every word and just acting like a government press release and actively covering up their fuck up.

As I had suspected there seem to be rumours that the herd immunity thing is a Dominic Cummings brainchild. It has all his hallmarks - it sounds very sciencey and TED Talkish, it has a Randian survival of the fittest element and it's fearlessly contrarian, ignoring the pedestrian ideas of fusty NHS types and the bleatings of Johnny Foreigner. If he is responsible for this he should be fucking gone. Questions should at least be asked.

Johnson's whole attitude also seems entirely characteristic - Etonian we know best arrogance, lazy and lackadaisical nothing to worry about, the same as with No Deal Brexit. Even now they have supposedly changed course the current Government strategy is pretty much doing fuck all - no lockdowns and it'll all be done with in twelve weeks. And they seem to have done fuck all to properly prepare the NHS. It looks like a shambles, and no media outlet is doing anything to hold them to account as we move towards the kind of situation Italy now has.
